Thank goodness we get the later game today. I get to sleep in, enjoy the morning and have breakfast ready for gametime. Life is good and I turn 44 years tommorow! So the old man wants a victory to celebrate his birthday. Schalke...ya, right . No line-ups yet so I'll be back in an hour or so....

    ...and here it is:
    Wieser
    Frickety-Fritz....Mertes....Pasanen....Mongo
    Frickety-Frings
    Wesley.........................Boro
    Marin
    Some wannabe fwd..............Pizza

    Charisteas
    Draxler.............Raul.............Farfan
    Poppadopoulis.....Annan
    Avelar.....Metzelder.....Hoewedes.....Uchida
    Neuer
So we're back to the diamond . Exactly what we don't want is Marin pretending to be a play-maker. Werder are total underdogs here so lets hope for an exciting match at least. A tie would be great...please?

I don't see us as underdogs at all. Schalke is in the same situation we were in a few years ago--crap showing in the league but deep involvement in two cups. This should be a pretty even game. Marin might be listed as a central attacking mid but I think it's much more likely that he'll spend most of his time on one of the wings, with Wesley pushing up to support the attack on the opposite wing.

I was thinking about the 1 in 12 wins vs Schalke in the past 6 seasons and especially the 4-0 loss this year. I give Schalke the edge and deservedly the CL high thier on must give them the odds.

9 mins and Wiese already saves the game for us...nice scramble Tim!

    14 mins. good pressure Bremen!!!

24 mins again Wiese saves the bacon...this Uchida kid is really helping Schalke's attack!

You're right about Marin playmaking...that role seems to be shared today. Everyone is involved and so far exciting.

30 mins. now Marin's getting pushed around the Schalke goal area...almost a chance!

It looks like a standard game from the Werder Bremen of a few years back. Dominate possession around the opposition's box, pressure their defense, not really create too many scoring chances, and concede lots of opportunities on the counters.

    half-time 0-0.

no complaints except for some bad calls. Werder really playing to win and maybe thier fortunes are ready to turn. I think we can win this match with Wiese playing the spoiler today. If werder pulls this off Schalke stays at 39 pts. and Bremen has 37. Not bad for 90+ min. work...that is depending on a goal or two. C"MON BOYS!! If anything (as rediculous as this sounds) I would like to see Marin come out and Astro boy come in or more realistically Astro in for dum-dum Wagner.

Actually Neuer saved it but pushed it right back into the center of the box for Wagner to tap in.

Good to see the team working as a unit and Wiese saves the day again. 70 min Wesley comes off and Schmidt is in. I hear that Astroboy came in (I'm assuming for Wagner but the announcer is Italian)

    no not Wagner...must be BORo

Arnautovic came on for Pizarro and had a nice volley deflected out of trouble by Uchida. It came from a great pass from Marin for once! Uchida so far is looking like the man of the match for both is offensive and defensive contribution on that right flank.

85' Fritz shows a great bit of Marin-esque dribbling and has a 1-on-1 saved by Neuer.

Yup, I don't know how Schalke has such an easy time finding fullbacks. So Dominik Schmidt just saved a goal brilliantly...and now Fritz missed the late 85 tally...really Fritz should have scored there. What a disappointment.

Well Slants, they tied 1-1 and I was thoroughly entertained. I wish they kept this mentality all season. They seem to be settling down and playing well together.

Some draws in a row now.

But I think today it was a deserved one, both teams had chances to win the match.

I was lucky enough to get a live BL feedfor most of the match. I'm curious what Stephan Effenberg had to say during the half-time interview. I was busy with laundry, but I swear it was him. Anyone watch it?

I'm sure he was giving lessons on taking penalty kicks.

Does anyone know, why Pasanens goal was dissallowed? I mean, sure, Mertesacker, 3 Schalke defenders and Neuer jump against each other trying to get the high ball from the corner, but that scene is outside of the 5 meter "goalie protection" area. I saw no foul there.
