Im still hoping that DCU remains in DC, but if they play in a suburb of it I hope they keep the name DCU.
As the months keep moving on while the search for additional investors continues, the 2016 completion date of the Silver Line to the intersection of Route 606 and the Greenway and Route 772 and the Greenway gets closer. How many years does it take to get the local approvals done and a stadium built? Pretty soon we're into that window. These locations are in the only county in the region that has show any stomach for allowing sports stadiums to be built and still have plenty of open land near by... Just sayin...
I for one hope they have things figured out way before 2016 as to where a new stadium will be,if not United may be relocated or worse. Not sure If I would continue to pull for them if they moved anywhere other than Alexandria or maybe Baltimore. Depends.
Yeah, but for me, if they move to a suburb and maybe even if they became Baltimore United(with same logo and colors),I would still see them as the same team. Now moving to NYC/St.Louis/Miami,etc, I would consider DCU as folded, and as a completely new team.
I have to disagree on this one. Why allow the District to get free publicity from a team that it wouldn't support staying in town? Having said that the name probably won't change if the team moves to the DC burbs. But a move to Baltimore and I predict we'll have Baltimore-Washington United (at last "United" would have some meaning), with ownership trying desperately to hang on to DC area fans. I don't want it, but it beats having the team leave entirely.
Because it would be totally quixotic to try to 'hurt the District's publicity' and interfere with your own established brand in the process. As long as DC United is playing close enough to the District that the fans are largely the same people as are going now, they can, should, and in all probably will remain DC United.
Case in point - The California Angels became the Anaheim Angels who then turned into the Los Angeles Angels, of Anaheim. And I'm sure the team would love to drop that 'Anaheim' bit, too - but their stadium funding agreement with the city prevents it. Glendale, AZ tried to pull the same thing with the Phoenix Coyotes (Glendale Coyotes? Please). Lesson to all the suburbs out there - know your place. You are a bit player, the region is named for the primary core city for a reason. Get over it.
The same reason most franchises in sports play in suburbs and have names for the major city near them. I'd prefer Baltimore United, or even Maryland United over that. lol United has meaning now, DC is the capitol of the United States.
Goff offers a little more than "zzzzzzzzzz" http://live.washingtonpost.com/chat-sports-with-tracee-04072011-new.html
In the same chat, Goff also sounded optimistic about adding new investors soon. Gotta have the horse (investors) in place before we have much hope getting a new cart (stadium).
"One good independent source tells me that DCU is close to adding local investors." Please let it be so!
In other stadium "news" ...... one of the proposed Virginia locations has been in Ashburn off the Greenway @ Rt. 772, mythical end of the Silver Line. I was driving past this exit on Monday and my mileage turned to 131313 - based on this grouping of 13s, I assume the stadium will not be built there, or will be very bad luck if it is. It's scientific, you can't argue with it
Must not get too excited about the tidbits, but usually when Goff feels comfortable enough to do anything but ZzzZzzZzz..it means something is brewing.
Want the DC-equivalent of this thread to take its place: Dynamo Stadium Episode I: A New Home That contains Q&As with questions like "where will the stadium be?" and answers like: ...and questions like "what will the stadium look like?" and answers like: ...and questions like "when will it open?" and answers like: Next season. ...and questions like "where will the mass transit line stop?" and answers like: Right at the entrance to the stadium. So jealous.
