Ironically, I think most of the hate towards MLS comes from within the soccer community, not from without.

It seems like your average joe American sports fan sees MLS as a cute little diversion from "real" sports.

But it seems like your average joe American soccer fan sees MLS as far inferior to the big leagues like the EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga, etc. We call these people Eurosnobs.

I deal with them more often than you'd think. When I link to one of my RSL match articles on Facebook or Twitter, inveitably I get at least a few comments like "MLS sucks!" or "RSL would get wasted by Barcelona!" (no shit, sherlock).

Some of these soccer fans have their gazes so far overseas that they will never see the quality that lies right under their noses, but I'm hopeful that some of them will someday realize that MLS is playing some decent soccer with real quality - not EPL quality, but quality nevertheless.

it would do wonders for the league if RSL was to win CCL and go to the club world championships. Unless we hit some massive injury bug, I dont see us "getting killed" by teams like Barca. Is possession going to be 70-30 (at best)? of course. But the Mexican teams prove it each year they go, we have decent squads over here.

There will always be haters but the longer that MLS sticks around, the larger the fan bases grow, as we have seen in Salt Lake, the more exposure the league gets with better TV contracts and on and on and on MLS will earn its respect.

With that being said, this is a very important season for RSL to find success at any level in this market. With the impolsion of the Utah Jazz and thier rock like fall out of the playoffs RSL with its so very solid FO and on field staff of players and coaches has an opportunity to capture more sports fans that have appreciated the way the Jazz have been such a stable organization until the loss of Jerry Sloan and others.

It's definitely not make or break, or anything like that BUT it is an opportunity for RSL to increase its foothold in the fan base across the Wasatch Front.

It also will be nice to listen to David "Jazz Jock Sniffer Extraordinair" Locke try to spin the "New Look", "Brand New Era" Utah Jazz as they try and rebuild from this season of O'conner screw-up 101.

Go RSL! Drive the bandwagon all over town and to Japan. There will be plenty of fans wanting to go for a ride.

What does the average american sports fan think of the MLS? Well, one of ESPN's polls of the day should give you a general idea.

    http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/polls

    Featured Poll #8 of 15:
Does Chad Ochocinco have a legitimate shot at making the Sporting Kansas City roster?

With approximately 10,000 votes in right now, 47% think that he does have a legitimate shot at making their MLS roster!

I love your enthusiasm and I love RSL, but put us up against Barcelona, Inter Milan, or one of the other elite clubs in Europe and I hate to say I see us losing by 3-4 goals. especially if this is a real match for hardware.

I think that just goes to show what people think of athletes in this country. The assumption that a high level athlete can compete in any sport is something that you hear all the time. People letter in multiple sports in high school and college, and think that those skills could carry over. More than anything I think that it is a complete misconception of the game. Anyone can run around and kick a ball for 90 minutes? Right?

I don't. I think that those teams are good, but I also think the match would be fairly even. I think RSL would hang with them, just like any midtable team from their own league would generally hang with them. Sure Barthelona is good, but RSL is as good as any of the top flight mid table teams and better than some. With RSL's current roster, I would be willing to bet that they would be at least midtable in the EPL, La Liga or Serie A. RSL is as good as a team like Everton or Fiorentina. Sure they aren't Milan or Man U, but that doesn't mean they are not a good team still. I don't think that, in general, RSL would win against those top teams in Europe, but they are still solid enough to compete. Even then, how many times does a team from the Championship or lower beat a Premiership team in the FA Cup.

And this is exactly what IBIK is talking about. The European league are not uniformly good. How many teams really compete for the Premiership? Since the Premiership has been formed, there are only 4 teams that have won, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal and Blackburn. But the big 4, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, don't win every league game by 3 or 4 goals, it's generally pretty close.

+1 Must spread rep. I definitely think, with our current roster, we'd compete well, and would even have a 50-50 chance of winning against the "big boys".

I know. The Spanish seta is ridiculous. My uncle served his mission in Spain nearly 20 years ago and he still speaks with the seta. It's just stupid... And I'm with you on Bartha. I was hoping Arsenal was going to pull it off and eliminate them from the UEFA CL.

Donk, i have to spread rep

That is exactly the point I was trying to make. When you have a team that is organized as well as RSL and has the chemistry we do, nobody is going to blow them out. Its just not how the sport works.

I think we lose 9 times out of 10... but that 1 time would be epic if it fell on the club world cup. Hell, look at the US v Spain game from the confed cup. No way in hell the US should hang with barca... er I mean Spain.

Sorry to again disagree but RSL is not mid table in any of the leagues you just mentioned. RSL would be very lucky to avoid relegation to the second league in any of the big: Germany, England, Spain, Italy, leagues of Europe. The simple fact is until the MLS can affort to pay market value for some of the worlds best talent, it will be as it is now a feeder league.
It would be totally cool to know with certainty how RSL could do in leagues in Europe, but I would be willing to wager some serious coin that we as a club would be middle table in the second leagues of the above countries. The idea that we can compete against teams like Everton because we had some success in a past friendly is a little wishful.
We pay our entire team much less than countless teams in Europe pay one player, and remember our DP striker could not make a go with a team in Switzerland.

WE're just going to have to disagree then. Watch the product on the field. RSL is as good as any of the top Mexican teams, as tehy have demonstrated in CCL. Those Mexican teams are competitive in competitions like the Copa Libertadores. In the club world cup, the Libertadores champion has won 3 out to UEFA's 4 in the current format. So apples to apples in real competition, yes, RSL would be competitive. I'm not saying the would beat Barthelona every game, but it wouldn't be a complete blowout. Bartha would win 8 or 9 out of 10. That's what I'm saying. Bartha would not mop the floor with RSL, as they have not done that in the Club World Cup against any of the other North American champions. Those matches are close.

Yes, RSL would be mid table and no, I'm not basing that on the Everton match, friendlies are meaningless. I am basing that on how RSL has performed at least on the level of the top Mexican teams and that is not a bad place to be for them. I do not think that MLS is the same level as the EPL, more like the Championship. Even then, it's not unusual for a newly-promoted team to end up midtable in the Premiership. As RSL is one of the top 3 teams in MLS, that in no way means the rest of the league is at that same level.

Badonkadonk summed up my feelings pretty well. I'm tired of hearing how RSL would lose to the big boys - of course they would! But you know what? Almost every team in their same leagues lose to them as well! Stating that RSL would lose to Chelsea doesn't tell me much about MLS, just like Everton losing to Chelsea doesn't tell me much about the EPL.

Know what else? I'm an MLS fan first and foremost. Yes, I know there are better leagues out there. I know there are players who make more than entire MLS rosters. But if I have the choice between watching a Serie A match and an MLS match, I'll watch the MLS match 9 times out of 10 (even though the Italian match might be higher quality). Why? Because it's OUR soccer, dammit.

So you're saying that because RSL has had a good tourney so far in the CCL that they would be able to compete with the top Mexican clubs?. A true measurement would be a knockout round game against Cruz Azul or Monterrey. When the loser goes home, which would mean that the Mexican clubs would take it seriously, and honestly I doubt RSL could compete against teams from the Libertadores let alone be a mid-table team in the EPL. Top Mexican teams in form like Pumas would probably be midtable in Spain but RSL doesnt have the depth to be able to compete consistently.

Some have said that the Mexican teams don't really take the CCL seriously until they are in the knockout rounds. If so, then we don't yet know how good RSL is.

    this argument cracks me up
Mexican fans say they have great depth. That their bench is just as good, if not just slightly worse than their first team.
    then we beat those guys
    and now they arent?

When they came to the RioT they had quite a few of their regulars out there (which is funny, cuz we had subs)... The monsoon in Mexico City had starters for both. It was an incredibly level match.

Pick a side and stick to it Mexican club soccer fans.

Maybe RSL hasnt taken it as seriously til now, ever consider that? ;)
