I am kicking off this thread with the thought that it can cover who is on our team (or on trial, or about to sign/cross the pond), as well as lineups for matches as the season wears on and our players work through injuries or take call-ups to their respective national teams.

PLEASE NOTE: If you post something you are claiming as a FACT, you should list or link your source in the post, but feel free to speculate on hypothetical lineups as much as you want.

    Re: 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

For the match against Philadelphia, we will be missing:

    DF DeMerit - nat callup
    DF Boxall - nat callup
MF Chiumiento - mild hamstring injury
MF Teibert - mild groin injury

Any guesses what our lineup for March 26 could look like?

    Re: 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

    My Guess:
    ------Hassli--------Harris------
    Knight---Dunfield--Koffie--Khalfan
    Brovsky--Rochat--Janicki--Leathers
    ------------Cannon--------------

Rochat has played a central defender role before... So it makes sense to slide him in and have either Knight, Wagner, or Brovsky play the left full back role, Knight or Wagner to play the left side of midfield... Janicki is solid, just not as fleet of foot as either Demerit or Boxall... (losing both of them to MNT Calluips sucks bigtime right now, as that seems to be the basis of the Caps strength Saturday, the spine of the team)

    Re: 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

The noise from various interviews on the Province indicate that Salinas will be ready to go. Given his injury status though, it seems like he'd be better as a sub that you hope you don't have to use.

I am looking forward to seeing Knight get some time. I loved that he came over to the SS after the game. The only one. =)

    Wes is a brilliant guy.

I had more than my fair share of pints with his dad at a Southsider tailgate late in the summer last year... Wes always shows the SS some love, and really does get "it" a super nice guy with a heart of gold.

Omar Salgado got his exemption and can play for the club immediately.

I am very excited to see him in action.

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

Hmm. I just read AFTN's blog and he said something that really struck a chord with me. He talked about how Teitur made a deal with the U20 Nats to only play Teibert 65 minutes (which Teitur did on the dot).

    But why?

The Caps pay Teibert's salary and the Caps needed Teibert the full 90. I know Ben Massey will hate me for saying this, but the U20 Nats had their game on a different day -- I just think we ought to be able to play Teibert as much as we need.

I feel the same way about Salgado. So frustrating to get his ITC and yet we can't get any minutes out of him. At least we had Teibert for 65.

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

At present, when not staring down injuries and call-ups, the following would appear to be our strongest lineup.

[LINEUP-4-4-2]Camilo, Hassli, Teibert, Dunfield, Koffie, Chiumiento, Rochat, Boxall, DeMerit, Leathers, Nolly[/LINEUP-4-4-2]

Can Akloul displace Boxall? Will Salinas make an impact? When we Salgado emerge? Should be interesting to watch our squad really gel.

    Stating the obvious

Who else believes that without our regulars of Chiumiento, Koffie, Dunfield, and Tiebert in the midfield, the Caps will struggle?

In the past 3 or 4 games it seems apparent that the bench is pretty thin, apart from Khalfan inserting some energy. Haven't seen Salinas play, only heard some positives from last year.

I would love to see the Caps play with a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Chiumiento serving as the playmaker.

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

We're getting a ton of players back, and things are looking up.

    Probable for next game:
    Dunfield, Morfaw, Akloul

    Back from the dead:
    Nanchoff, Salinas

    New:
    Vegenas (on trial)

    Sadly, no sign of:
    DeMerit

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

If Salinas is the real deal as stated after pre-season, how about this lineup?

    ......Camilo........Hassli

    ...........Chiumiento

    Salinas......Koffie.......Dunfield

    Rochat..Boxall..Demerit..Leathers

    ..............Cannon

    4-3-1-2

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

TT is all for the 4-4-2, but I think 4-3-1-2 is ideal for us.

And I'm just excited to see more midfield depth. our play up the centre against both Houston and Chivas was awful.

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

    Agreed.
4-4-2, has it's place, but TT can't be so rigid with it, plus Davide is wasted out on the right, and you can see he is mostly moving into the middle when he is in possession. Trequartista!
As well with that 4-4-2, other than Tiebert, and occasionally Khalfan, the wing play has been pretty sad, regarding service into the box, no one can make a decent cross.
Really missing Koffie and Dunfield in the center, can't stand how we are just giving away possession with slack passing.

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

I believe you will eventually see Michael Nanchoff starting in the midfeild. Apparently he played much of his fall season with Akron injured with a strain. Despite that he was still their most important and reliable playmaker. Very impressed that Vancouver insisted he rest and rehab until the strain was 100% fully recovered. In an inagural year, it would have been easy to rush him.

    Akloul released.

I'm surprised at this. Obviously it's a money thing since we have far worse players on the roster which can only mean agressive signings coming up.

We need a new CB, RB/LB and MF.

Boxall, Leathers, Rochat don't cut it. Demerit is the only solid one back there.

Dunfield, Koffie and Khalfan are decent, but in comparison to other MLS MF's they're subs on a contending team.

Teibert, Chum~, Camilo, Hassli are the only ones of substantial value.

Hopefully we can turn the rest of these season around with a few signings in July.

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

I'll take issue with you calling out Rochat, I think (all year) Rochat has been our best player. He's been asked to play a variety of roles and seldom makes mistakes that cost us, and you have to take the good with the bad with him when he's playing out of position.

He's best used as a left back that follows his first pass on the overlap. You don't get that when he's playing in central D.

I'll agree wholeheartedly that Boxall and Leathers simply don't cut it. Koffie still has a long way to go, whereas Dunfield is at or past his prime. Khalfan is too one dimensional for this team and league, he'd excel at the league below's level or elsewhere in the world in the right league.

I'd prefer Rochat at CB than LB if we don't sign a CB. Fair enough?

    Re: Whitecaps 2010 Lineup/Roster thread

I thought Rochat was really solid at left back early on in the season. He was strong defensively and moved the ball forward well as well. Other than his cracker of a goal a couple games ago, he hasn't been as noticeably good recently. I am guessing he must be frustrated with the teams success, and on field play. The revolving door of players around him can't be helping either. I think if you find a better defensive mid pairing Rochat's play will better.

I haven't been impressed with anyone who has been paired with Demerit, nor has his injuries this year helped our defense mesh, but I think right back and defensive mid are more glaring holes to fill. I was disappointed with Akoul's release, as I preferred him to Janicki/Boxall.

I would use a DP for a centre mid, and try to get a solid right back without using DP money. Guess you could use the last DP spot for another centre back as well
