quite the amazing day of soccer we have ahead of us right now, ManU vs Marseille and Bayern vs Inter in UEFA Champions League, LAG vs Seattle in MLS Kickoff and the RSL vs Saprissa to finish the night. WOW!
I saw that earlier today! It's pretty funny, but if it brings attention to MLS then why not? "Bad publicity is better than no publicity" or something like that!
ya i have no problems with it, if he makes the team through the tryout than no one can he didnt deserve it. he'll bring his personality to the league, which some will argue is bad, but again i think its something MLS can handle. ill definitely laugh every time he bitches about not getting playing time and then clap when he pulls a sharpie out from behind a goal post, signs a ball and then tosses it into the stands after he scores. he's definitely a very athletic and gifted person with a BIG personality to boot.
MJ did it with the MLB, then why can't Ochocinco do it with the MLS. I think it would be really cool.
ochocinco's got a leg: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AldNVxN67Y&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - Chad Ochocinco kicking[/ame]
MJ DID NOT do it with the MLB - that was my initial point. Jordan played 127 games for the Double-A Birmingham Barons (about equivalent to the defunct USL Division 2?) His stats: Batting Average .202, 3 HR, 51 RBI, 30 stolen bases, was caught stealing 18 times, 11 errors, 114 strike outs His average stats were about 14th or 15th best of the 17 field players on the roster that season. He was not a success - he was a sideshow to draw $$$. Really, it was a disgrace to the sport. If Chad Johnson were to make a reserve spot with SKC (can we start calling them SuKC yet?), it would be for the exact same reason as Jordan making a minor league baseball team - to draw fans, get publicity, and make some extra $ while making a joke out of the league.
How about Utah's very own Danny Ainge?? Professional baseball, followed by a pretty decent career with the Celtics.
There is a huge difference - Ainge was an All-American in both sports in high school (as well as the only person two get three All-Americans with the third in football). He also played both basketball and baseball clear through college (BYU basketball, Toronto Blue Jays baseball). On the other hand, Chad Johnson (isn't he changing back his name?) abandoned his soccer career before high school. He hasn't played it in any organized fashion for at least 20 years.
just curious, but if he does make the team, don't you think there will be a bit of a backlash on the quality of MLS? If some 30+ year old football player can walk on to an MLS team, all the soccer haters and main stream media out there will use that put down MLS and the skills required to play soccer professionally in this country. Just curious what you all think?
We would just respond to that criticism by pointing out that he made the team in Kansas City, a team that's barely good enough to be called an MLS team. Then we ask if Olave would have a shot at making the Cincinatti Bengals roster. All joking aside, there's no way Chad Eightfive makes KC's team. He hasn't played a competitive match since before high school. I don't care how fast/strong/athletic he is, he won't make a pro soccer team (let alone an MLS one) with junior high level soccer skills. This is just a publicity stunt to get people in KC to care about the Wiz.
Given how many followers said big mouth receiver for a shite team has, probably not a bad move on KC's part. Hell, he may just make KC's team given that half of them are only slightly better than a junior high team. Maybe it's just that shitty minor league baseball park they play in.
not anymore that new one they are building is pretty damn nice... to bad its still the same shit team though
Yeah, it's a long ways off. It will require convincing people who paid millions for a franchise in a top level league that they can be sent down to a lower level league and have their cash flow cut drastically. That will be a tough sell.
Just saw something new, Official in the New York vs Seattle match walked off 10 meters for a free kick and then marked with white spray paint the pitch in front of wall. Its always funny seeing players in a wall shuffel forward inch by inch resulting a 7-8 meter wall. No more!! I have never seen this before, has anyone else?
watching the timbers match........god, im having nightmare flashbacks of the first few RSL years. they are playing EXACTLY like RSL did. no possession, the defense is embarrassingly bad, the keeping bad. there's some talent in the midfield and up top, but their tactic is to boot the ball up and over the top and hope someone can get on to it. its ugly and shit and very frustrating to watch. going to be a long year supporting these guys. good thing i got RSL to support first and foremost.
