These are definitely a solid start to this year's campaign: Quakes launch 2011 commercial campaign: EARTHQUAKES VS [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai81CcyercU&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - San Jose Earthquakes 2011 Commercial: Firing Squad[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1JpA2yuQIc&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - San Jose Earthquakes 2011 Commercial: Pinata[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSJK7UQFqYA&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - San Jose Earthquakes 2011 Commercial: Dunk[/ame]
Pretty nice. Nice use of some of our better-known players using their soccer skills in differently-themed situations. I even like how each commercial kept the "Did You Feel That?" slogan at the end (after all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it) and that the entire team logo was shown at the end this year as opposed to showing only the bottom half of it last year (that way, even viewers somewhat unfamiliar with our team will then know that the team is the "San Jose Earthquakes" rather than just "Earthquakes"). All in all, nicely done! GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
I like how the Wondo one shows a sense of history, and it made me laugh; but would have been even better to be a Landy pinata.
Those are pretty good. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_05qJTeNNI"]YouTube - Larry David: A Pretty Good Tribute[/ame]
I liked the Convey dunk spot the best. It combined a Galaxy fan with the horn, tying them together as the obnoxious target; and the long-distance view of Convey's long shot is more impressive than the skills demonstrated in the other two spots. But it "had me" at the beginning anyway just by having a Galaxy fan about to be dunked !
So much better than that hobo stuff last yr. Agree would have been better with a Cakes pinata but calling it an evil pinata is probably as far as we are allowed to push it.
wow ! the Buck Shaw its looks inviting ! and I though our marketing dpt couldn't come out with anything worse that "what is a"
hahaha... I gotta admit those are pretty good... and the Galaxy fan with a vuvuzela.. awesome Even though they're simple they look well made (and HD?), not like some low budget stuff. Glad to see them. My advice for the marketing staff - please air some of these in the Sacramento region! (and the rest of Nor/Central Cal for that matter) I still think my favorite is the coffee spill from last season - I hope they reuse that one as well.
the idea is good, the fact that they used the vuvuzela and a guy wearing a Galaxshit shirt make sense, but to do it in a totally empty stadium, not even with the Earthquakes banner, it shows how on the cheap this campaing is, bottom line... LAME !
Not lame. I think the viewers understand these are ads, roaring crowds are unnecessary. I like the soccer themes. Pinata should have been a goat or a red bull, but still. The galaxy vuvuzela worked.
here is another one... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T6xOgU6VWM&feature=youtube_gdata_player"]YouTube - Elevator Pitch - Anthony Perry San Jose EarthQuakes[/ame] I really hope this isn't what they are sending out to potential corporate sponsors. WTF ? are we trying to find new levels of desapointment ?
I thought those videos were quite good. I don't understand why people are calling them lame. Was the production value not good enough? What do you expect a video like that contain? I thought that last years ads were lame because they showed off pedestrian goals. The only one that I enjoyed was the one involving the coffee.
Why in the world should there be a crowd? They are a soccer team, not the Harlem Globetrotters. People pay to watch soccer, not secret ninja training techniques.
0_o the hell is that? as for the ads, i like them, though i hope they can incorporate some actual game action into some.
This sounds like the one they send out to friends at the old folks homes. Looks like Anthony's put on a bit of lard, there. You'd better lay off the pies, Anthony.
They usually pull some highlights from last season at first, and after the season gets going they change 'em out with new highlights. The Vuvuzela one is perfect. With the Wondo one, I think it would have been cool to see the pinata explode.
I have been underimpressed by almost all the marketing/advertising efforts. And much as I adore Anthony, that video was not well conceived or executed. The ads this year are better than most of the ads in the past years, but with a little tweaking, they could have been better. For example, why have the little kid in the pinata ad? Maybe it's a mom thing, but all I could think was...little kid is having fun taking a whack at the pinata, soccer player comes along and destroys the pinata, soccer player takes the candy. I expected a cut to the kid crying. Also, although we get the pinata, that is truly an in joke that will go right past about 99% of people who see the ad. With the vuvu ad, I would have put the guy in a tshirt reading "a soccer team from LA." Most people (even my friends in LA) have no idea what the Galaxy is. If the ads are trying to attract new fans, don't use codes that are only meaningful to current fans.
Well, would the people not knowing much about the Quakes understand there is a rivalry with Galaxy or "a soccer team in LA"? Probably not. This is an ad that targets the usual SJ fans and gets them excited. The other 2 videos may work better with all people.
THIS! Marketing is, or should be directed at creating new Earthquake fans, not at existing fans. None of these ads do anything to attract the non soccer fan or non Earthquake fan. They pay homage to "inside" jokes and rivalries that no one outside the immediate core of Earthquake fans would recognize. The posters who said these were lame, are correct, but whats worse is they are ineffective. Lew Wolff keeps complaining that he doesn't have enough season ticket holders or fans. And yet, he apparently hired people to direct his teams marketing campaign who have no idea how to actually market our local professional Soccer team to people who don't already know and love our local professional Soccer team. The longer the current management team is in place the more depressed I become about the future of professional Soccer in the Bay Area.
I doubt that the pinata was even meant to be a reference to the Landon pinata. I think people are reading "insider" stuff that may not have even been intended. The Galaxy guy, yeah, maybe it could have been made more generic, but I think the vuvuzela thing is more critical to the skit. A lot of people watched World Cup and know about the annoying vuvuzelas. I think the most effective ads are the ones that show real game footage (e.g. great goals), and shots of fans going nuts, etc. Make it look like Quakes games are exciting and fun.
