I can't wait til 50 years from now, when I'm a spry 71 year old, when I get to see the small Lawton City squad win the US Premier League. Promotion/relegation will happen eventually.

I don't think there will ever be a need for it.

Well, I will give him credit for confidence. There is nothing wrong with that. However, I hope he retracts his statement after a few games when you realizes he underestimated the defensive talent level of the league.

As long as none come against us it would be cool to see.

I can't live with it. Nothing good can come from a foreign club, or someone who owns a foreign club, owning an MLS team. It should be verboten.

What about a guy like Kronke? Appreciate he doesn't own Arsenal but he is fairly close and he is on the board of directors. Red Bull also own various soccer teams throughout the world --

Just throwing it out there because I am strangely comfortable with the latter two but somehow Foreign teams buying into MLS leaves me less than comfortable and it doesn't make much sense to me.

They'll drop out once they realize they can't use it as a reserve league the same reason Barcelona dropped out of the Miami bid.

Yeah, I can bend on the question of a minority owner, I suppose, as long as he's on a short leash. Red Bull is an interesting case because there isn't really a "parent" club, they're all on equal terms afaik. Again, if there's a short leash on transfer behavior, I'm fine with it. EDIT: as long as it's enforced, and not just some informal agreement.

I think it could work out. However, I think they need to build a separate brand and the league needs to make sure they know how MLS operates and know it well.

I dont think it is fair to say that it is bad in all circumstances.

With that said, I think making it work is an uphill battle and the league needs to do their due diligence before granting a team to them.

That being said, if it does end up in Miami, I think soccer fans from Florida and the South in general would take it. It may be a foreign owned club, but it would mean that the South finally has a MLS club again. A lot of them have been groaning (for good reason) that they no longer have a MLS team.
I completely get why they want another NY team (I can also see reasons against it). Fosters a rivalry, would be a true NY team, a lot of money there, etc.
But I would like to see them expand out a little more. I mean, holy criminey, they added three Northwestern teams in a row and then Montreal. Would love to see the league to go after more untapped markets/ regions.

On another note, I have a theory. Now, I'm not saying this is either a good or bad idea, but just thoughts. Other leagues in the U.S. have toyed with the idea of adding a Mexican or Carribean team to their respective leagues. This isn't as far-fetched as it may seem. Exhibitions have been hosted very successfully in Mexico. With Canadian teams, is not like these are U.S. only leagues. I've never been a huge fan of adding too many Canadian teams, but if it was just one team south of the border, that would be interesting. Theres a lot of issues there that would need to be worked out. Now, apply this idea to MLS. What about, say, the Peurto Rican Islanders, for example? Not saying this is what should be done, but its interesting concept to think about. Again, this isn't a pitch for the idea, I'm just curious how others feel about this. To tie it to MLS, would you rather that Boca start a team here, or give a team to say, Puerto Rico (which is still American territory)?

FIFA, CONCACAF, the Mexican federation and the FML would NEVER allow an MLS team in Mexico.

As for Caribbean Islands, some have their own first divisions already, the rest are smaller than many US cities I'd rather see get teams before them.

As for your final question, it depends on which one is more financially viable, which unfortunately lead me towards the Boca bid. I can't see a team in Puerto Rico bringing anything to the table for MLS.

To add clarity to Mike's comments (which are entirely accurate) - FIFA prohibits placing teams in another country when they already have an established professional soccer league. Teams established prior to the formation of a professional league can remain with the league they where founded within.

Without the rules: Rather than MLS adding a team in Mexico, -- it would be far more profitable for FML to add a team somewhere across the border here. Tap into their own people, with their own style of play and the likes of Chivas and Club America turning up bi-weekly. I can't imagine that an MLS team would draw bit in Mexico unless it was Chivas USA and they moved back to Guad.

    Re: MLS 2011 Non-Sporting Discussion [R]

TBH, I don't ever see it working with MLS. I kept on trying to stress that I wasn't thinking it was a good idea for MLS, but more looking for viewpoints. I was really more thinking about the NFL and MLB, who've both put a lot more thought in it. I was just thinking about the topic and then thought about MLS. Honestly, I wouldn't want it, unless it was U.S. territory. As far as other sports, I could see maybe working, but you'd have to be very picky about where you choose to place it. The NFL is has gained some considerable ground south of the border. The NFL has some crazy ideas about expansion teams, some of which I don't think are realistic. I remember the GM talking about how he wants a team in London... interesting idea, but... sounds a little too far fetched for me. I mean, granted, If you are say, a NY team, its a long distance either over the pond or to Cali. But on the flip side, what about Cali teams? Logistics as well. Good luck finding space in London. To be honest, the thing the NFL needs to gain more stable popularity anywhere outside of the U.S., is to have more international players. I mean, Mark Sanchez is followed in Mexico, though he is American born. Imagine if he was actually born and raised in Mexico.

As far as MLB, the sports popularity south of here is far from questioned.
If there wasn't the pesky embargo and things were more stable, Cuba wouldn't be a terrible place to have a baseball team. They love the sport. But so many things about that wouldn't work right now.

But then you're using a 4th roster spot on a goalkeeper. Meaning you'd have 2 getting very minimal playing time Kempin would be ok cause he'd play with the Juniors, but Bingham would likely get no time, unless we dropped Kronberg...

That would be what I assumed would happened if we brought in a GA goalkeeper -- it'd be the only thing that would have it make any sense.

Still as you say, I think it'd be kinda silly unless we can trade him?! ...
