Those Czech names aren't cool.

In the 1990s panthers employed a Ukrainian forward named Shvydkiy ("fast" in Ukrainian). Wouldn't you know it, he was the fastest on the ice. He had problems stopping and turning but straight line from A to B he had no rivals

Then there was Viktor Kozlov and his "kozlinnaya" goatie, Oleg Kvasha with his hair that looked like "kvashennaya kapusta". Those were the days. Now, Panthers are boring cast-offs. Had they gotten any more boring they might just go to the Stanley Cup finals

My mother in law has offered many different explanations for it why they are so funny, my two favorite:

Ukrainians got to pick their surnames by the first word they utter as children

Ukrainians have silly surnames because Russians are oppressing them and wanted to demean them, but Ukrainians are so sly they took up the insult as a badge of honor.

Ukrainians have a better sense of humor than Russians.

Note that 90% of the explanations she offers are in some way derogatory of Russians.

Here's one of the more serious explanations: Ukrainian cossacks (the Sich) used nicknames based on person's facial features, hair styles, animal resemblance, etc, which would later become surnames, which is why you sometimes see names like Perebiynis (Ukrainian female tennis player), Pryhoda (Soviet footballer), Nevmyvaka, Vernydub (Ukrainian footballers), etc.

Well she's right about one thing but I won't say what it is.

I noticed that central/east Ukraine have a predominance of -ko and -nko endings. Galicia has lots of -shyns and Volynia -uks. Goliath would you agree?

Since when were they Ukrainian? No one referred to them as such and they never referred to each other as such..

The ending -ka can also be a hint of Polish ancestry but only in some cases.
