We live in the age of action. We can be well assured that there will be plenty of action on that day. Something tells me that Brazil is in for a big surprise but at the end their maturity will pay off and tie the game.

    2-2

Iran didn't play a game for like 6 months and then suddenly we play and beat Korea in Korea, Armenia, China, Bahrain, Oman (not yet but we will obviously win :D) and now we're playing Brazil! Zob Ahan is also doing good. :D

    gooz times

Yep they're both going to be in the squad. We'll most likely miss one of our best defenders (Hadi Aghili) due to injury and out best attacking midfielder (Khalatbari) due to Asian champions league overlap.

Unfortunately the first topic at our forums diverged into a political debate and honestly, I loathe politics.

I'd like to know what do you guys think about this friendly. From the previous posts it seems like you are anxious to watch it , it's the first time that our nations are facing each other after all... Some are even confident on a win :D

I can't say what I expect to be honest, unfortunately I don't know much about Asian football so this match will introduce me to your football. We have a lot of youngsters coming and we need to test them to renew our squad, and from what I've heard you are in good form atm so you may want to test your strength against us, so I hope that this match will be useful for both sides. It's a shame that it couldn't be hosted at the home of any of the participants tho.

Iranian fans are very much looking forward to this friendly, not because we think we'll win (anyone who tells you otherwise is lying), but because we struggle to arrange friendlies with even mid-level international teams. The end result will be much less important than the experience for our guys and our fans.

Iran used to be an undisputed powerhouse of Asian football. No doubt about it. Many think our best team ever was the one that featured in the '98 World Cup in which we beat USA 2-1.

But our team has undergone serious changes over the past 3-4 years and, due to abrupt and frequent coach changes, we haven't been able to really solidify a team. Iran hired Afshin Ghotbi (former S.Korea assistant coach) as head coach at the end of the qualifying process for World Cup 2010. Despite his lack of popularity with many fans, Ghotbi has achieved some pretty good results with our team and it seems as though we're rising again. He has grown fond of the 4-3-3 and it has become our formation of choice against strong opposition (we're likely to see this against Brazil). The Asian Cup will be Ghotbi's chance to show if he's the real deal or just another hack.

In terms of our current form- yesterday we displayed one of the worst performances I have ever seen from our team. We lost to Kuwait 2-1, and we looked embarrassingly amateurish. However, we left Seol recently with a 1-0 victory in a friendly match featuring top players, which is nothing to yawn at.

It appears as though one of our starting CBs (Aghili) will miss the match to do injury, and one of most talented attacking players (Khalatbari) will miss the match due to club obligations (AFC Champions League semi-finals). Also, rumor is that one of our legends (Karim Bagheri) will make an appearance against Brazil for a final farewell from the national team ("Team Melli").

Our strength is definitely our midfield, and our weakest point is our fullbacks.

The crowd will be interesting in this match. There are many, many Iranians living in the UAE and therefore the crowd will be full of Iran fans. On the other hand, Brazil is the most popular football team in the world and many locals will surely be rooting for the Brazilians. It'll be fun, and I can't wait!

^ Agree with everything you said except our best team being the 98 one. I think our 2006 team could beat the 98 team 8/10 times. We just got unlucky and had to deal with a lot of non-soccer-related drama in the camp in 2006

So many "fans" turned their backs on us during Dunga's stay, saying that we didn't play beautifully and so they changed teams, I start to lose my faith on fans from other nations. I'm glad to see that it's not the case for you, thanks for yor support!

...Asian Brazil? Heh that's a big shoe to fill, even we can't live up to our reputation sometimes! ;)

Thanks for the info, I found the bolded sentence to be very interesting because it really reminds me of our time with Dunga, but even after winning the Copa America and the Confederations Cup he was never accepted by everyone around here... Then we faced Netherlands and you know what happened  It didn't help his case that one of his most trusted men, Felipe Melo, made such a disgrace during that match (own goal plus red card). I don't need to say that Melo is not welcome around here anymore...

Mano's been using the 4-3-3 as well, sometimes changing the formation to a 4-5-1 during the game. It's really easy and he doesn't even need to make substitutions to do that, due to the similarities of those formations.
Our weaknesses? I'd say that we still didn't overcome Roberto Carlos's departure, it will be a while until we find another player of his caliber.. To think that we would be so blessed in the RightBack position, having both Daniel Alves and Maicon, makes me wish that one of them could play in the left too :p We tried to use Alves there but he wasn't as efficient as he were in the right, so now we are giving André Santos a chance.
Another weakeness we used to have was our defensive midfielders, during those last two decades we were always producing pure defensive midfielders, that can only destroy and make a safe pass. However, today's game requires that those players create plays sometimes, so we are calling different kinds of players on this position... We are still searching for the right balance, you will most likely see a pure defensive midfielder (Lucas or Sandro) together with a defensive, but more creative midfielder (Ramires or Elias)... It's very fortunate that your midfield is your strong point, we need to test this combination of players.

Btw Mano is giving some time to a few players of our previous WC squad that can still play in 2014, that's why you won't see the likes of Maicon, Julio César, Kaká etc on this game.

kaka is injured. so apart from the goalkeeper, it is pretty much brazils best possible outfield team atm. with a backup of dani alves, i dont think missing maicon will make a world of difference lol. how come you ignore marcelo as the left back option?

I believe that Marcelo will get more chances in the future, we are trying a lot of players on this position (I still want to see Filipe Luis, ex-Deportivo La Coruña and now in Athletico de Madrid, tried in our national team). Perhaps Mano is not convinced with his defensive abilities, since our Rightback is so offensive it would be better to get a Leftback that can defend well or our defense would be too exposed.

I completely agree with this..although I think the 98 team was more talented though. I think it was mainly the injury issue with Karimi and all the nuclear controversy going on and the election of AHmedinejad and the event being in Germany, the country where Nazism was and what the US and its allies thought the Islamic Republic would be.

I was REALLY pissed at Dunga for not including Ronalidnho in this past WC. I know his form was declining since hsi 2004-early 2006 days but I thought he was really starting to pick it up.

Main problem with him right now is that he is too stationary. Always on that left side, if he doesn't move around he is marked more easily... And he doesn't help much in the defense.

His passing is still top notch tho and he is trying more tricks like he used to, but I reckon he should try to enter the penalty box more often and score, he is too selfless.

Respectable result for my Iranian bros.

They have the bragging right for beating Brazil back in the 70s Olympic games lol.

^We are cursed, surely. The olympic gold is the only prize we never got in football, but Im sure someday our time will come.

I was quite dissapointed by our performance today, it felt like we didn't give our all. Your midfield truly made our work harder , you marked us really well and your goalkeeper seems to be very good.

I still don't understand why your goal was overruled, it didn't seem like the player that scored was offside. A shame, you had alot of supporters there, it would've been a great gift for them...It's hard to find competent referees nowadays.

I'm very upset about this game (the second half, at least). I feel it was a wasted opportunity to get some real experience against a top side. I enjoyed the first half, as Iran seemed to really keep the pressure on Brazil (and we even scored, though it was unfairly disallowed by the ref).

By the second half, however, we chose to knock the ball around the back until we got bored and turned the ball over. This was a friendly match. Why didn't we practice our attacks against such a top team as Brazil? In the first half we played our game as best possible, but in the second half we just decided to stop playing football altogether. What's the point of arranging a friendly against a top side if you're not even going to test yourself?

Brazil didn't seem to put much effort into the match, either, which is too bad. But we're the ones that wanted this match so badly. We're the ones that wanted to test our skills against one of the world's best... so why didn't we?

Anyways, I'm still proud of our boys for the first-half performance. I thought they surprised Brazil with their skills, and they didn't seem overly nervous.

Iran could have easily scored 2 goals (1 hit the post, one was over ruled and there were many other chances as well) but Brazil also could have scored more than 3. I wish we had scored at least one though.

Congrats to Brazil and hard luck for Iran .I'd like to know what you guys think about this game .I'm really disagree with what happened last night .Players didn't play with their hearts .We have to change our defending organization immidately before Asian Championship 2011. And we weren't in our best situation itis what it is.:)

I wasnt too disappointed with the match, considering the opposition, although I think there was too much of passing the ball around in our own half of the field. I have seen this tendency from team melli even against weak teams in WAFF. Iran lacks a skilled attacking minded midfielder ala Ali Karimi. SEVERLY! (it doesnt mean I think he should be called back, we just lack a player in his caliber or even half of his capabilities) Maybe its asking too much? I dont know, but Iran is seriously lacking in creativity :(

What I got from this game is something many of us have known. Hajsafi is no good at LB-position. Probably because its not his natural position and why Ghotbi insists in using him there every damn time, when proven not effective, is beyond logic.
Dont get me wrong, I like Hajsafi and think he should be part of the squad. Just not as a left back.

Its a shame Oladi didnt get a chance to prove his worth, because I think he has been on of the better players recently among the forwards. He works hard and seemed to have matured a lot. Oh well...

3-0 is actually a very disappointing result. Although we were definitely unlucky and should have scored at least 1 goal it still wasn't what I was hoping. There has to come a time when we no longer expect to be pushovers even by the world's best. I think Japan and Korea are already at that stage but we still aren't.

Unfortunately we lost too many world class players all at the same time without proper replacements. Nekounam is getting old so the only world class player we have right now is Rahmati and maybe Khalatbari. Shojaei was promising at one point but he tanked and I just don't see another super star from the group of youngsters. Our promising U-17 team that won the Asian Cup two years ago also did very poorly in the U-19 tournament this year.

Unfortunately unless we see the likes of Daei, Karimi, Mahdavikia, and Hashemian rising among the ranks I don't see too bright a future. :(
