I didn't say she was the best player...

No, seriously. She took a blow to the head by her own player when coming out to gather a through pass, which you will see in the highlights because the collision led to the 4-4 equaliser, and she looked injured after that, lying on the ground for a while and pressing an ice bag to her cheek during the break before extra time. Yet she went on to play the full game, fearlessly charging out of the goal to gather through passes on more than one occasion, and she made some good saves throughout the match. At one point she made a great reflex save that turned a shot I was sure would go in out for a corner.

On a different note: Germany 0, North Korea 1 HT. Great curling strike into the top corner.

Thanks for the account - as usual I am shut out of any look. Must have been a thrill to see that. I suppose it will go down in u-17 lore as one of the greatest......

    I see the Germany - DPRK stats are 65% v 35% !

Great drama, but not necessarily a great game.

Germany can't even translate their possession into chances though, much less into goals.

Hurry up Germany, score and take the game to extra time already!

Full time: North Korea 1, Germany 0.

Even though I don't like the result, this was by far the best game of the tournament so far.

No way, this is not the senior mens' DPRK team in South Africa - so much is at stake, these girls are much too young for the labor camp !

Well it goes to show, even at this level, DF is at least as important as attack. I am sorrry I missed this one as much as the earlier one.

Great! Now we have 2 more games with North Korea and thier amazing attack:rolleyes: The best footballing team is defeated by one of the more ordinary sides they could have played. I think I am more dissapointed than shocked.

After the South Africa 1st half Germany never had a decent forward upfront agian. But hey, I thought Canada had overly defensive tactics but North Korea took the piss.

:( Frustrating way for any good team to go out, but now every team left in the comp is about even in abillity. Its wide open now, but i would rather not see Korea DPR win it playing the way they do.

:pDeath to the 'Bunker Down' teams.

    That's why I love this game!! :D
Sometimes the good team wins and sometimes the underdogs win.

North Korea didn't bunker until the final 20 minutes of the game, they were just very organised and disciplined in defending. Do you really want to blame them for playing defensively against a team that is known for scoring goal after goal?

Don't forget that these girls are 17 years old at most, and apart from that there is a large number of people around them who support them and have expectations for them, the girls themselves have made great efforts as well. Do you honestly demand of them that they sacrifice a chance to win and make all the hard work pay off for entertaining the few people who are actually watching this tournament?

Give me a break and these brave girls the credit they deserve.

    One more game.

lol Brave? Brave is giving it a go, tit for tat like Nigeria and Korea Rep. Korea DPR are chancers, and this time it worked. Korea DPR played well against a German side better than they could hope to be.

The WWC is now poorer not having its best side, leaving the viewers instead a team that kills games, not win them.

2 games if DPR strangle the life out of Japan or Ireland.

The best team is not the one that scores the most goals. If you need to see scorelines like South Korea vs Nigeria, go and watch basketball. But don't try to hold the players accountable for your misled interpretation of the game.
I know which one of these two matches I preferred watching...

By the way, you remind me an awful lot of those Spanish fans at the WC who couldn't quite cope with the fact that Switzerland beat them.

Well, the defending champions aren exactly underdogs.

Damn it losing 0:1 sounds pretty bad, but I can't say too much about the game as it was too late for me to see it. :(
Did North Korea play very defensively? Did Germany concede the goal after a set piece?
I thought South Korea would have been the perfect preparation for Germany for this match.

That's life, you can't win everything. I just hope I don't get angry when I see the highlights (maybe I better just don't watch them ;)).

It's often the same, teams which were great during the group stage are out in the first play-off round (see for example the Netherlands during EURO 2008) and team which were shit during the group stages gets better and better during the ko-matches (see for example my favorite team Germany in EURO 2008 *g*).

But hey, I AM really a huge women's football fan now. Didn't know that a loss at a U-17 women's tournament would hurt so much.

OK I get it, you like all types of football. I enjoyed the underdog results in South Africa too, believe me. I rooted for Switzerland beating spain too. But Korea DPR are DEFENDING CHAMPS, I expected better. Korea DPR used the same defensive tactics in the group stage agianst weaker oposition, but as defending champs you would have hoped for more.

Nigeria vs Korea Rep was between to very even sides, and they played a game that at times was very naive, but thats due to them both playing to win the game. The 5-6 scorline didnt matter, they happend to finnish chances most teams have missed in this WC. Anybody with football knowledge knows 5-6 scorelines are once in a blue moon.

This is youth football where learning good play is key. At senior level Korea DPR have lost ground in their region, with many of their first U-20 Success contributing the core of the side. Korea DPR have been caught by Japan and Austrailia at senior level, with both sides having little to no success at youth WC. DPR Winning in the appraoch they use doesnt seem to be creating well rounded players.

The German girls may not be the real deal at U-17 levels, but with the technical football they play come U-20 and senior WWC they will have real depth in their talent pool.

I don't really like to think of any team as the defending champions at this level. Is there even a player from the '08 squad still in the team?
And no, I don't like all types of football. DPRK-Germany was won by an organised and disciplined defense. ROK-Nigeria was won because both teams made tons of defensive errors and one team had a little more luck exploiting them than the other. Yes, it was a drama, and it's nice to see some drama from time to time. But it wasn't a good game.

Japan has little to no success at youth level? Which parallel universe are we talking about here?

It certainly creates players that have tactical awareness and can play together as a team.

In the first half, both teams had two shots on target each. The goal was scored from a long-range effort, but Germany nearly conceded another one from a corner. In the second half DPRK played more defensively, occasionally going for a counter. They started bunkering with about 20 minutes left to play. Apart from two headers in the first half that went wide Germany never really looked like scoring.

It certainly was the match with the highest combined skill of both teams I've seen in this tournament so far, although if you're German you probably wouldn't want to watch it anyway.

North Korea in every game they play use pretty much the same dogged approach. Im yet to see any high possession technical game, or standout players. Skill and creativity will always be more highly prized in football as its so damm hard to pull off. Getting two banks of four with little ambition other than 'dont concede' is somthing most teams can do.

Lets not kid ourselves here with ideas of DPR exelence. I am yet to see DPR in this tournement show anything more than bieng robust and hard to break down. after 2006 this is all they seem to be about. They lost to Nigeria, In agame they thought they win, and since have realised thier limitations and played accordingly.

Germany had to push the tempo and missed a sitter from Petterman inside the six yard box. After that the game just ran out of steam. Korea DPR didnt show any guile or craft for any part of the first or second half, but neither did Germany. Korea DPR scored from there one piece of magic, while Germany with a run from Lotzen in the first half could not. Germany giong out in this manner is similar to the last U-17, where agian they looked unbeatable.

Oh yeah, when did japan reach a semi or final of a FIFA youth tournement?. At senior level they just finnished 3rd in Asia having never finnished 1st, and have a 4th place Olymipics finnish as thier best ever FIFA result. Austrailia never seem to qualify for U-20 and now U-17 WWC, and yet just beat DPR in the senior Asian Championship. Senior level Japan may be the best team in asia and 5th in the world, but their past youth level record is pretty crappy. With the young players showing up with Japan, Austrailia and Korea Rep, DPR will struggle to be nothing more than a U-17 and occasional U-20 power.

It took Germany over 70 minutes to score against South Korea, yet they didn't realise their limitations and didn't adjust their game.

AFC U-16 Championship: 3rd place once, runners-up once, champions once.
AFC U-19 Championship: 4th place once, runners-up once, champions twice.
So out of a total of 8 times these championships were held at all, Japan reached the semis 7 times (87.5%) and won the final 3 times (37.5%). In both competitions Japan is the all-time medal leader.

They narrowly lost against an Australian side that was really bunkering. And unlike Germany, they had lots of real chances in that game, hitting the woodwork three or four times.
Also, they've won the EAFF Championship (which is pretty much the AFC Championship without Australia) two times out of the three times it was held (again, all-time medal leader).

Here's some fun statistics with Japan's FIFA rankings for you:
    2003 (WC): #14
    2004 (Olympics): #13
    2007 (WC): #10
    2008 (Olympics): #9
    2010 (now): #5
    Next FIFA rankings release: #4
    ...
Keep in mind that unlike the men's rankings, the women's rankings take games into account that were played years ago. Knowing that, if you see a team advance in the rankings like Japan, you can estimate what their actual rank is.

It's very hard to find a stream anywhere to watch these matches.

Too bad Germany had to meet the North Koreans in the QFs. To my mind, that was a likely final (after North Korea, Brazil and Germany are the strongest teams, I think).

I predict the North Koreans keeping the title. They have the most evolved concept of game tactics at this level, IMO.

Yeah Ralf Peter knows that too. But German players will improve, DPR players if current trends continue wont.

What's that supposed to prove? I didnt realise all the times japan won AFC championships they then finnished 3rd or 1st in a FIFA age group world cups.

Hold on, your comparing a senior japan side to a U-17 German side in how they break down 9 player defensive lines? Even so Australia knew Japan were the superior side, and admited they got alot of good luck. Knowbody claimed Australia were technically as good as Japan. Australia were not considerd favourites in any of their games against the east asian sides, unlike the U-17 & 20 Korea DPR who have former champion sides, and yet still play a limited style.

Hmmm im not sure about the EAFF championship being like the Asia cup. The EAFF cup tends to be testing grounds for new players and tactitcs. You dont even garuantee that all the nations will compete.

Again whats this Prove? other than what everybody allready knows; Japan Have a improving senior system. Up untill New Zealand U-17 Japan STUNK at WWC's. Following that the U-20's did well and the seniors finnished 4th in an Olympics. If Success was measured like that (RECENT PAST Only) we would all be Chelsea fans:eek:

Japan never seem to stressed about results at these youth tournaments, always stressing the play of the side, even in victory. Untill Korea DPR create a Mana Iwabuchi, Ji So Yun, Popp, or Laroux i wont believe the hype.

I hope you realise that youth teams are generally much more inconsistent than senior teams. Like for example the USA who lost the 2008 U-17 final 1-2, and haven't even qualified for this tournament.
If my statement was supposed to prove anything, than that would be that your initial statement about Japan not having success at youth level is wrong.

I didn't mean to compare Japan to U-17 Germany. What I wanted to say is this: Germany lost to DPR Korea because Korea was more skillfull in defense than Germany was in attack. You may not like the way Korea played, but it wasn't by pure chance that they won.
The match Australia - Japan is a very different case; Japan had lots of very, very good chances, and the goal they conceded was due to a GK error (the coach played the arguably worst of the three keepers available).
Korea won by skill, Australia won by luck. Germany not advancing to the semis says something about their skills, Japan finishing 3rd does not.

Are you kidding me? You realise that New Zealand 2008 was the first U-17 WWC ever, right?

You can't go back to 1999 to determine how good the Japanese squad is when there are maybe two or three players left from that time. But that's the way the women's rankings work. If Japan hadn't lost certain games more than ten years ago, they would now be #4 or #3. Don't be surprised if they win the next WC.

Anyway, OT. Let's get on with Spain-Brazil. My guess is that whoever wins here will finish 2nd. So I hope Spain can win this one.

Spain starting strong, had a header hit the bar early on and I think they should have been awarded a PK just now...

Beatriz is the main threat, playing as the right forward for Brazil. Paula López is fast on the counter for Spain. Very even match, actually.

    1-0 for Spain.

I was wondering why Daniele kept on doing short goal kicks when there were Spanish wingers covering the Brazilian fullbacks. Well, she'll probably stop doing that now.

Still 1-0 HT. Brazil could have equalised, but the shot from Thais bounced off the outside of the post. Looked as if Spanish GK "Lola" Gallardo nearly had a touch on it, though. She seems to be the best GK of this tournament so far.
