Javier Hernandez could eventually become the top North American goal scorer at the World Cup, but Donovan could additionally benefit from being the PK taker (like Blanco has) if the US continues to perform well in 2014 and if he makes it to 2018.

I know, and LD at 36. I just wanted to give them the same amount of WCs.

They both may only play 4 and not 5. I guess that LD has a better chance of playing 5.

For anyone that plays forward or midfield, it all depends on their style of play. A Bofo, Riquelme, Blanco creative type, can probably play for a longer time.

A Chicharito, Landon, Beasley and Medina type rely heavily on their speed or quickness, some both, for most of their game. These type of players age quickly.

Hugo Sanchez, Guille, were outstanding players in their youth and prime, but once past 30, it got ugly.

Guille, right now, and Sanchez @Dallas Burn. lol

FC Twente bigger than chivas......I don´t know about that.

on the second part, It all depends on Chicharo. If he scores a lot of goals this season he could be be the best in Concacaf this year( yes I know how hard thats gonna be:))

If they played a home and away, I have no doubt who would be on the winning end of things.

Not to sound like a hater, but considering none of the CONCACAF teams were all that impressive this year (None making it as far as the Quarter-Finals), there really isn't any reason to make such a big deal about this. Afterall, Gonzalo Higuain had as many goals in a single game.

I think you misinterpreted the topic title. Landon Donovan has scored 5 goals during his career at the World Cup, which is more than any other CONCACAF player all time.

For comparison's sake I believe Luis Hernandez has 4, Blanco and Wanchope 3 each.

Better than Chivas :D (because chivas is not i Europe)

They are not one of the top teams in Holland, I do not think they played the champions last year but they did play in the UEFA.

Ruiz scored 24 in the league, 2 in UEFA qualification, 0 in group play, 2 in their local cup. 28 total in 2009-2010.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/bryan/leistungsdaten/spieler_39642.html

He did not score against PSV. ;), but he did score against AZ Alkmaar.

P.S. they did finish second in Eredivise in 2009, 4th in 2008, not sure about last year.

First of, congrats to Donovan, here in Mexico he is not a very popular player. Many mexican fans hate him, but I think he is a great player.

About Chivas vs Twente. I hate when fans from America (the continent, not the USA) instantly think that because it is in Europe, must be better than us.

Right now, maybe Twente has a better team, and can beat Chivas in a home & away match, but you can't say that a small team from the netherlands is bigger than a top team from Mexico and one of the best and biggest teams in our continent.

I mean, Club Deportivo Guadalajara is in pair of teams like Boca Juniors or River Plate, I bet you will never say Twente is bigger than those teams.

Well many people in Argentina would also disagree with your comment.

Brazil is the top league in the Americas, they are probably top 6 or top 8 in the world, Argentina is also pretty good, but they might not be top 10 in the world, Mexico would probably be top 15.

I know there is a ranking out there that ranks Argentina #2, but that same ranking has EPL #4 so

But to your point, yes many teams in Brazil could play and compete in EPL and La Liga, Argentinean teams, and perhaps top Mexican teams, but as a hole, how would a middle of the table teams compete against each other, how about bottom of the table teams?

Actually to make your point more valid, you could argue that breaking down the opposition and quality of teams that both Hernandez and Ruiz played against and scored against.

Did one of them score most of their goals against middle to bottom of the table teams, and the other score against the top teams?

That analysis would be a little better.

Actually the best way to compare teams is based on salary, it is not a perfect system, but over the long run statistically speaking teams with higher salaries will end up with the most points.

Again not always, just look at Club America :D.

Probably, and maybe, but all of your analysis is based on your perception that the FMF just isn't up to par. 10 to 15# is laughable.

Did you analyse the fact that there is currently a Mexican team in the final of Libertadores?

Did you forget we actually have a South American title to our name?

Mexican teams have a winning record against the entire western hemisphere, except against Brazilian clubs.

The FMF is home to the most advanced and state of the art soccer specific stadium in the western hemisphere. It's also home to one of the, if not the most historic soccer shrine on the planet; Azteca.

We win all the of the North American champions league titles.

We make the most money, and don't rely on transfer funds to stay afloat, but still transfer players to europe all the time, Mexican or foreign.

We get the best non Euro quality foreigners in their prime.

We have the best infrastructure and have the most advanced soccer training facilities in the entire hemisphere.

All of this puts us in the probably 10 to 15 range? Lmao. People just think because it's Mexican, it can't be that great. We'll put it ranked #14.

That's just the truth. It's the Mexican league, I don't know much about it, so i'll write it off.

p.s., this is the longest post I've ever written. lol

It is about the money Son! :D

You could argue that Mexican league is better than Argentina, It would be a heated debate and Argentineans and Mexicans would never agree, that would mean top 10 perhaps, but nowhere near Brazil, and Brazil will just get much better as the country grows its economy.

I will assume that you understand that the Brazil league is better, top to bottom not just the elite teams, think America and Queretaro FC. and think Sao Paulo and Guarani.

Now the leagues we can agree:

    EPL
    La Liga
    Serie A
    Bundesliga
    Brazil
    France (Ligue 1)

That would mean at least 6 better than Mexico. So you could argue that Mexico has the 7th best league in the world if you want. I am sure there will be disagreements with you.

Now leagues that you would disagree, but could be better or equal to Mexico

    Champions league (2nd div England)
    Holland
    Russia
    Turkey
    Greece
    Portugal
    Argentina

So you see to 10 or top 14 is not as crazy as it sounds.

Maybe you were upset that I said probably, how about this

Mexico league is surely in the top 15 in the world, and perhaps the 7th best in the world. It could be equal or even better than the Eurodivise league. Does that un-bunch your pantyhose?

The thing about Argentina, it has a lot more silverware, but at the same time, that's all accumulated through decades of playing in a tournament that Mexico has only participated for just over a decade. That's the difference, there would be no question who was better if the Mexican league could add more titles under their belt. We'll be working on that next wednesday.

Still, because of that, Argentina > Mexico. No disputing that. That's leaves it in arguably 8th, which is about right.

That is perhaps I personally rank Holland ahead of them both, Holland used to be very good in the European tournaments, Ajax won a few Champions, but that was long time ago, some people may argue that Russia is now a better league, they at least have some good players.

The argument can be made that most European leagues are top heavy (good 3-5) teams and the rest are not very good.

But if Mexico had a single table and no playoffs I think that Mexico would look just like the European leagues with 5 teams winning all the tournaments. Teams would not just cruise in the regular season and turn it on in the playoffs, and the teams that could afford to pay for good depth would win out at the end.

Argentina has won a lot more silverware in just the last five years. Mexico is obviously at least the third best league in the hemisphere top to bottom. Can't say though that they can claim being better than Argentina right now. Eventually they will win a Libertadores, but then so has Paraguay, Colombia and Ecuador and those just in the last ten years and nobody claims they are better than Argentina with just that.

I think that the case can be made for the Mexican league due to the head to head record that Mexican teams have against Argentina in the South American tournaments.

I wish there was a UEFA style league rankings/stats to see what leagues are stronger. There might be some surprises.

By the way none of this takes away from LD being the highest concacaf scorer in the WC! ;)

    No.

Dwight Yorke (Manchester United/T&T) comes to mind immediately. Lots of CONCACAF players have had much better careers than Donovan, but not the success at the World Cup because their countries haven't qualified.

By the same logic, you would say Donovan > Giggs, since Giggs has never scored in a WC, which is just silly.

Why don't we talk about CL goals as well?

And, of course, any measurement by goals only is weighted towards forwards and attacking mids, leaving out defensive players and GK's altogether.

Yes, LD is a quality player, but not the best CONCACAF has ever produced. Heck, Rafa Marquez has La Liga titles and CL titles (and more goals in each than Landon).
