It's no secret that MLS is looking to add a 2nd NY team to the league. However, in Don Garber's interview with Grant Wahl yesterday, it seems like getting a 2nd NY team is their priority. This question is for those fans who live anywhere but New Jersey. If a second NY team did come about, and started playing in queens... ....Would you switch allegiances? And if so, would a second NY team simply brand the Red Bulls as a New Jersey team?
No freakin' way would I change allegiances. I've been a fan of this team for too long to turn my back. Besides, the Red Bulls are going to be the Yankees of MLS and whatever the new team is would be like the Mets. We'll win all the hardware and the other team can get a trophy once every dog's age.
^^^ Agreed. My fiancee keeps saying things like, "If there's a closer team, you should support them". Then I ask why her dad didn't become a Mets fan in '62, even though they live closer to CitiField than Yankee Stadium. It's about the only argument I can ever win.
When this club was Metro, I never left. When this club became RBNY, I never left. No matter what this club has been or become. From the seats, to 101 now as a member of the media. This is still my club and I will never leave. I never left the Yankees when they were bad I never left the Jets when they were bad I never left the Rangers when they were bad I never left this club when they were bad or down right horrible I can't speak for anyone else, its up to them if they want to stay or leave. I can't demand you to stay either. It's up to you what you want to do. But if you want my opinion & I don't mind giving it. Just be truthful to yourself and the club that you want to support.
For now I live Near Boston here in Mass. and when in New York I live in Richmond Hill, Queens, if I go back to New York isn't a question I will be a fan of any New York Team, but I never will live The Red Bulls either....Allways I will be a Metz (Metropolitano).....
To answer the question, the answer is NO! I have no trouble going to the games in Harrison from Long Island, and therefore there is no reason to consider switching allegiance. Secondly, I highly doubt there will be a 2nd NY team. Wilpon is a baseball person and he is doing a lousy job running the Mets. How would he run a team in another sport? Even worse. Citifield is a white elephant. Wilpon's company is a real estate company and they lost a lot in this recession. Did I mention Madoff?
No. Especially not for a Queens team! It would be tough if it were a Brooklyn team. I can get to and from Redbull arena quicker than many places in Queens, including Flushing Meadow Park that Garber mentioned. Plus, Redbull is doing everything you would want an owner to do. Top Class stadium, proper manager, and great new players Henry/Marquez. No need to leave
This is part of it for me, but in the end this idea makes absolutely no sense. With the new stadium and new signings, the Red Bulls are really starting to build a stronger community of supporters, why in the hell would you introduce a second team before you can sell out the first one???
In Garber's defense, he's probably looking at data that shows that the Queens and Bronx people arent getting down to Redbull arena, not to mention the Long Island folks. There are soccer crazy people in those places, so he is banking on them coming out for a closer stadium in the boroughs proper. I actually think they will get good crowds too if they sign at least one well known latino DP. In addition, inner NYC is so densely populated, and well served by the subway system, they should be able to jam the stadium with ease when you think about it. I cant tell you how much I wished RBNY found a spot in downtown Brooklyn for the arena! As it is, Harrison isnt too bad for me because its just down the Pulaski Skyway.
Because if we want to make a fubol country of USA, we will need 48 or more teams in the whole country.....
I would If there is a 2nd team that actually plays in New York, and if the Red Bulls are rebadged as New Jersey, I'm off this ship!!!
I would not switch my loyalty to any other NY team, I support the Red Bulls in the bad, very bad and the good times. Just like I support the Knicks, Yankees and Rangers. Can't stand throwball anymore so I don't have any real interest in any team.
Regardless of how many MLS franchises NYC is granted, there is zero possibility that RBNY will become RBNJ.
God no. No hesitation. First off, I'm a very loyal person. Secondly, this is actually a pretty bangin' club to support. That second club will be a red-headed stepchild of NY. I laugh to think what Wilpon would do. Anyone who got bi-curious would come crawling back to RB New York
I don't have a reason to support a second NY team. But I don't have a reason to hate one either. I'd be interested in their team, but when it came down to a derby match I'm on the side of the MLS original. it's interesting to think though that I see more NY Cosmos stickers around NYC than I do RBNY... well anything. I guess huge billboards every now and then offset the effect, but I see those Cosmos stickers EVERYWHERE. I highly doubt it would happen, but if the club becomes RBNJ, I'm out. simple.
Maybe, I would have to be convinced the new club was going to be run the right way and not be some contrived brand experiment and I would have to be convinced that new ownership is committed to doing things the right way. Even then it would come down to whether the new club with no history is more identifiable to me over a team i've supported since the begining that is now a "global brand project". Guess they have to get a team for me to find out.
These are also my sentiments. In the last year, the Red Bull have made huge steps in creating supporter loyalty: the new stadium, Henry signing, Marquez signing, etc. Even the NY Football challenge was good, certainly a whole lot better than previous European team exhibitions in NY. It is a pain for me to get to Red Bull Arena, and there may be a team located closer, but I am starting to feel the connection. After 10 plus years of feeling like I need to go to Red Bull / Metro as an obligation, I now look forward to having fun at RBA. I have not felt this way since the Mathis days.
