    The battle between Italy and Germany for third has been discussed already, but I noticed that there's also a close battle for sixth, seventh, and eighth. Sixth gets two clubs in the Champions League Group Stage and one in the qualifying rounds, while seventh and eighth get one club in the Champions League Group Stage and one in the qualifying rounds. The fourth and fifth place clubs in the sixth best league start the Europa League qualifying rounds one round later than the clubs that finish in the same position in the seventh and eighth best leagues. Including bonus points for reaching the 2010-2011 Group Stage for the 22 clubs that don't have to go through the qualifying rounds, http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2011.html says the country coefficients for 2006-2007 through 2010-2011 so far are:

    6. Russia: 35.124
    7. Ukraine: 34.466
    8. Portugal: 33.596

    Should the sixth place country change in 2010-2011, it would affect access to the 2012-2013 competitions.

    This will be an interesting race to watch. Ukraine won't end up 6th, they're still riding the high of Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv's UEFA Cup runs of 08-09, results that weren't exactly backed up in 09-10, though Kyiv had an admittedly brutal CL Group. Between Russia and Portugal, I'd give the edge to Russia especially if Zenit, the best team in Russia right now, can squeeze through the Non-Champions track to give Russia 3 teams in the group stage of the Champions League. Zenit will have the advantage of being in mid-season form when the qualification games are played, which could give them an edge to get through. Ultimately, this might just come down to the luck of the draw.

    This certainly will be a race to watch. RPL seem to be the strongest bet to retain the 6th. Ukraine and Portugal will both come asking. Don't dismiss Ukraine - Shakhtar will be in the second pot for the Group stage and should advance. Dynamo may join 3-4 other UPL teams in EL group stage. And a similar deal may be dealt by Portugal.

    I suggest we make weekly updates here on the race.

    6. Russia: 35.124

    Teams:

    CL1=Rubin Kazan 21.758 (ch/GS) (pot 4)
    CL2=Spartak Moscow 33.758 (ch/GS) (pot 4)
    CL3=Zenit St. Petersburg 61.258 (ch/Q3) (seeded in CL PO, pot 3 in CL GS)
    EL1=Lokomotiv Moscow 25.758 (eu/Q4) (pot 3)
    EL2=CSKA Moscow 66.758 (eu/Q4) (pot 1)
    LC=Sibir Novosibirsk 8.758 (eu/Q3) (unseeded in ELPO)

    7. Ukraine: 34.466

    Teams:
    CL1=Shakhtar Donetsk 73.910 (ch/GS) (pot 2)
    CL2=Dinamo Kiev 42.910 (ch/Q3) (unseeded in CLPO, pot 2 in ELGS)
    CW=Tavria Simferopol 7.910 (eu/Q4) (unseeded)
    EL2=Metalist Kharkiv 25.410 (eu/Q4) (pot 3)
    EL3=Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 14.910 (eu/Q3) (pot 4)
    EL4=Karpaty Lviv 7.910 (eu/Q2) (unseeded in EL PO)

    8. Portugal: 33.596

    Teams:

    CL1=Benfica 72.659 (ch/GS) (pot 2)
    CL2=Sporting Braga 39.659 (ch/Q3) (unseeded in CLPO, pot 2 in ELGS)
    CW=FC Porto 76.659 (eu/Q4) (pot 1)
    EL2=Sporting CP Lisbon 57.659 (eu/Q3) (pot 1)
    EL3=Maritimo Funchal 7.659 (eu/Q2) (unseeded in EL PO)

    9. Turkey: 31.250

    Teams:

    CL1=Bursaspor 6.890 (ch/GS) (pot 4)
    CL2=Fenerbahçe 54.890 (ch/Q3) (unseeded in CLPO, pot 1 in ELGS)
    CW=Trabzonspor 10.390 (eu/Q4) (unseeded)
    EL2=Galatasaray 43.890 (eu/Q3) (pot 2)
    EL3=Besiktas 33.890 (eu/Q2) (pot 2)

    Some pot positions aren't final.

    I think Portugal has the best chances to reach the 6th rank this season. 4 out of 5 teams are well ranked and in favored pots.
    Russia has currently only one team in a good pot, but Zenit has good chances to reach the second pot and Spartak could end in the 3rd pot. Ukraine has 6 teams and only 2 of them are highly ranked, the other 4 are in danger to get very hard groups.
    Turkey only has outsider chances, but 3 out of their 5 teams are seeded in pot 1 or pot 2 and could get quite some points (but usually at least one of those 3 Istanbul clubs fails).

    No real change this week. Karpaty Lviv (Ukraine), Besiktas (Turkey), and Maritimo (Portugal) all won their Europa League matches. No Russian teams in action, leaving the standings at:

    6. Russia: 35.124
    7. Ukraine: 34.633
    8. Portugal: 33.629
    9. Turkey: 31.450

    That Sibir is going to hurt Russia's coefficient. At least, all the other clubs listed above are the top half of the standings teams for their prospective leagues. Sibir are the RPL debutantes and are not doing a good job of it.

    On top of that the huge trips that Sibir Novosibirsk has to do because of their geographical location. As of now, Portugal seems to be on the rise with Benfica and Porto. Rubin Kazan were quite good last year and perhaps Dinamo and Sparta Mosku and Zenit can clinch to past performances as well.

    I am not very concerned with Sibir's long trips. They're not very good. THAT is going to be their problem not travelling.

    Difficult to overlook the influx of talent to the Russian Premier League during the past month or so. Certainly Zenit and CSKA are positioning themselves well to possibly make some serious noise in Europe this upcoming season.

    I am sorry.
    In Germany there are many Turkish fans and somehow these megalomaniacs tricked me again in thinking their crap teams were half decent.
    :(

    I should have known better, but Turkish-German friendship, you know... :rolleyes:

    Ukraine and Turkey have no chance of reaching 6th. This is a battle between Portugal and Russia and I believe Portugal has the upper hand. 3 reasons why:
    - 2005/06 was the only time in the last decade where russian teams won more points than portuguese teams
    - Portugal only has 5 teams competing, while Russia has 6
    - Portuguese teams have higher individual rankings

    15 FC Porto 76.659
    17 Benfica 72.659
    21 CSKA Moscow 66.758
    26 Zenit 61.258
    28 Sporting 57.659
    48 Braga 39.659
    94 Rubin Kazan 21.758
    139 Krylia 11.758
    154 Dinamo Moscow 10.258

    I do not think that club rankings matter. RPL is a far more even league. Which is why it is actually tough to qualify for some of the Russian clubs. Every year two or three of the well-established RPL clubs do not make it into UEFA competitions. Portugal brings the same three clubs + Braga year after year after year. That is why they are in higher positions than RPL clubs.

    And, look now, of the clubs you've listed Dinamo Moskva and Krylya are not even playing in Europe this year. A year ago, Spartak (yes, the most successful RPL club) could not make it, neither could Lokomotiv - two of the most established clubs in RPL's history. They're in this year.

    Now when you speak of Ukraine, you may have a better point: Ukraine, like Portugal, brings the same clubs into the UEFA competitions year after year after year: Dynamo Kyiv, Shakhtar Donetsk in CL, Metalist and Dnipro in EL, plus two other clubs just to fill out UPL's quota.

    that appears to be the wrong season as Portugal had higher numbers in 05-06.
    2007- today Russia has had the upper hand.

    What helped Portugal numbers was FC Porto and Boavista FC , both of which had exceptional European seasons. Sporting CP had one decent season reaching an UEFA cup final ( losing at home to CSKA :eek: ) to speak of. Sp. Braga only has done well in the last few seasons. All other clubs didn't really helped the cause.

    True. Not to mention a second-division Russian side qualified for Europe this season by reaching the Cup final last year. This fact will almost certainly hurt their coefficient this season though.

    The same happened in Portugal a few years back, (01-02 ) Leixoes, then a 2nd div club, reached the Portuguese Cup final and qualified for Europe in the following season, which if I recall it right , made it past the first qualifying round but lost in the 2nd.

    The point is the same clubs are involved and get to increase their totals. In RPL, only one or two clubs get to play in continental competitions year in and year out. So, if Spartak missed last season, they did not add to their coefficient.

    Sibir are actually an RPL side this season, but, perhaps, the worst one.

    You misunderstood what I said. I was talking about points won by all teams of both countries.

    2000/01 - Portugal 24.5; Russia 23.0
    2001/02 - Portugal 37.5; Russia 14.0
    2002/03 - Portugal 43.0; Russia 14.5
    2003/04 - Portugal 41.0; Russia 23.5
    2004/05 - Portugal 49.0; Russia 40.0
    2005/06 - Portugal 33.0; Russia 40.0
    2006/07 - Portugal 48.5; Russia 26.5
    2007/08 - Portugal 55.5; Russia 45.0
    2008/09 - Portugal 47.5; Russia 39.0
    2009/10 - Portugal 60.0; Russia 37.0

    Portuguese teams consistently win more points in Europe than russian teams. Seeing as we have only 5 teams competing this year (one less than Russia) that's the perfect ocasion to make a gap in the rankings.

    I'm actually expecting this to be the best season in recent years for Portugal's ranking (55 to 65 points total, which divided by 5 will end up in ~12.000 coef. for Portugal). :)

    Boavista's last european run was in 2002/03. That has no weight in today's ranking.
    Porto's UEFA Cup + CL wins were in 2002/03 and 2003/04. They also have no weight in today's ranking.
    Sporting's UEFA Cup final was in 2004/05. Guess what? Also has no weight in today's ranking.

    Come on man... :rolleyes:
    Benfica has been very well placed in the rankings since the 60s (most of the time in top5-15).
    Benfica only dropped in the UEFA rankings from 1995 to 2002 thanks to disgracefull management (one of the ex-presidents during that time even run away to England to avoid jail time here in Portugal).

    Anyway, I don't get how you say Benfica hasn't helped Portugal's ranking, even though we've ranked #17, #18, #23 and #17 in the last 4 seasons. That's a minimal difference to Porto (#13, #17, #19 and #15 in the last 4 years).
