By the time we were gifted that goal we had already weathered the Mexican storm and were starting to get our attack in gear.

Yeah, the "gift" of a goal changed everything from there.

    Pretty much

It's his defence mechanism, but funny nonetheless ;)

How did everything change? Mexico never changed their approach to the game. They were playing how they were going to play regardless of being behind or in the lead.

The only time you already weathered the so called Mexican storm was after the offside goal. Until then it was a one road coming from the Mexicans.

Are you joking or simply being this naive on purpose? They collapsed mentally the second the goal was scored with their confidence gone and only playing with anger and stupidity (2nd goal tells all), and your team stopped playing like a scared team and dominated the entire match with ease afterwards.

You are going to tell me that a goal that was given, but shouldn't have, early in the match has no affect on players???

That goal was scored about ten minutes after we slowed Mexico down, we were already starting to our game going. It was only a matter of time before we scored based on the way we were pressuring the Mexican defense.

Maybe so, but before it happened, Mexico was shot down by a poor call. If you tell me that does not affect the players on both sides of the pitch, then you probably have never played the game.

I'm not saying Mexico was on the path to victory, not at all...but the goal changed the way the rest of the game was splayed in my opinion. Argentina were able to breath a lot sooner than later...

Considering the attack we offer coupled with the fact we were pressuring yeah I'd say it was a safe bet we were going to score a goal somewhere. I'm not saying the offside goal didn't have some sort of mental effect on the Mexicans, it did based on the bottled defensive lapse we saw a few moments later. The Mexican approach to the game was to attack and attack some more so in that respect nothing changed. It's not like Mexico came in and bunkered. I'll say this much, I was impressed with how Mexico handled it compared to the English.

If anything falling behind should encourage them attack more. But by then Argentina had already started to control the match.

Not to take credit from Mexico, who was a worthy opponent. They challenged us, but that doesn't mean they rattled us.

Let me ask you, do you think England rattled Germany, at some point in the match?

Before that game I was hoping it'd be a classic like in 2006, but alas not to be. Still, after the result in the morning I didn't even watch the second game properly!

No, sorry...for teams like Mexico to fall behind to a team like Argentina is a confidence killer, especially on a poor call by the officials. It might encourage them to attack more, but in reality, we were all waiting for the goals to start pouring in from that moment on. The longer they could have held on, the more hope they would have had.

Trust me, I have supported teams that have been the underdog before, I know how it works.

Yeah I do...two goals in a few minutes. The boys looked a bit rattled there for a moment. Who knows what would have happened at 2-2?*

*The match would have ended 4-2 for Germany.

Will Javier Mascherano be the only defensive midfielder? He'll have his hands full with Ozil, and I would not be shocked to see Mascherano get red-carded within 60 minutes if he doesn't half enough help in center-pitch. As solid as he is, he'll need help in marking the Germans. It would, in addition, be a tactical error by Diego Maradona to start Veron; however talented and experienced, Veron is a lot slower now and this will help Germany regroup when the Argentines have possession - and we all saw in the England match how organized this German side is.

Both are very good sides and in my view, Argentina has more talent - but that alone may not be enough to propel them to victory. If Germany score first, I think Argentina will lose - based on Germany's historical record, I don't see this German side getting eliminated if they are the first to concede a goal.

This, along with Netherlands Vs. Brazil, will be one of the finest games in the tournament. I will watch it very attentively.

That has nothing to do with somebody's notion that somehow the Mexican players "rattled" our players, just because they came out playing hard.

Mexico attacked, hacked, worked hard, they tried everything. As I saw it, they never rattled our players. Our guys kept their cool and did their business.

Of course Germany is a step up. So we'll see what happens.

Yes I could also tell their world class mentality really showed on the 2nd goal gifted to Argentina and then sprayed passes to nowhere all throughout the game. Very impressive stuff from them.

Your team made absolutely no chances before the goal nor looked during any time in control while they hit the bar and another shot somehow curved in an awkward angle and missed by inches. Mexico was easily the better team before the goal, chances wise and controlling wise as well.

Mexico at 2-0 down looked more composed than England at any point after that goal was not allowed. Of course how Mexico and England played post ref shocker has zero to do with what may or may not happen this Saturday so how about we get the topic back to that?

Give the Mexicans credit for a couple of well taken shots, but how does that translate into our players getting rattled? Maybe I'm missing your definition of "rattled". As I understand it, rattled means they lost their cool, as the Mexican players did, or the English players. But our guys always kept their cool and easily won the match.

Obviously you didn't watch the first 10-15 minutes of the second half. Am I gonna get a warning for pointing this fact out?

The relevance to the Argentina v Germany match was in that somebody made the curious assertion that our players get "rattled" when they are attacked, and they gave the Mexico game as an example. But yeah, I think the response has been established already, lets move on.

Here I have an observation that's worth noticing: Germany's new style of play is certainly attractive to watch but it's performance against the opponents show a pattern that is not pointing to their favor against Argentina. With their new style, Germans were quite successful both in execution and final results in their first game; then against Ghana -- a much more challenging and technical opponent -- they had difficulties dictating their new style of game; in fact, Ghana had a better share of control of the midfield. In their third and last group match, Germans faced England with a midfield lacking creativity, so they were able to dictate the game with having better share of the midfield. But, now agaist Argentina, the new German style being still a new way of football and approach to the game may work against the Germans because that would be playing into the hands of the masters of that style. The old German style would be more competative against Argentina. If Argentina controls the midfield the way it can, unlike the game against Mexico, then Germany could have a hard time getting good service to the front men.

Just depends on the quality of the ball players
