shouldnt they be looking for a result, anything, but a loss.

if they need to stay alive they need to go all out

I was about to say the same thing.

5/1 is the best you can get.

I say 3-0 England. Sorry Algeria.

It's the media that has 'expected' the trophy all these years, not real fans.

You're fairly uneducated about England fans and yet still post tripe about them. That is why you fail.

I would reply in an illustrative and factual manner about English fan expectations, but I got a warning already for doing that. My thoughts on the topic will remain censored in the England v.Algeria thread.

I think I can say that the above effort was an attempt to refute the attitude that you would be invincible, if you could only play your best. Surely the opponent is part of the equation? Does Algeria even need to show up for this? You could just play by yourselves and let us know afterward if you played your best or not.

I doubt England will blowout Algeria. Indeed, the chance that Algeria will draw England to me are higher than a blowout in favor of England.

Wow, some yanks really have a problem with the English having a better team eh?
As far as "the other team to consider".... different story between players and fans.

England vs Algeria (considering Algeria, England should come away with a win)
England vs USA (considering USA, England should have come away with a win)

I don't see algeria getting destroyed, but i definitely see england win this game.
2-0 is a decent result and i think all English would be happy with that.

Algerias left wing is good when it is allowed to play offensive, with ziani and belhadj, but i think they will be bound to defending overall. I don't know if algerias coach is considering a more defensive sub for ziani,(which is very unlikely because algeria needs to get something going in this game), if not so there could be space for england to drive up the scoring beyond two-nil.

Actually, the consensus was that they are better at every position except GK. They also played better, and yet we got a draw. Those are the facts. I think we're just looking for an assessment of both teams that fits the facts.

They're better than Algeria too, but we're hoping Algeria plays well, for reasons that should be obvious.

5-0 seems a bit high for this match, don't you think?

Does anyone else think Heskey's not got the quality for this competition? He barely starts for his club, doesn't really score goals, and generally slows down the play.

All the other good teams have a playmaker (Italian number 10 position) in that role just behind the striker - Messi (Arg), Sneijder (Ned), Oezil (Ger), Iniesta and Kaka do fairly similar roles I think. All these players link up the game. The midfielders pass the ball in to their feet and they turn and run at people or squeeze through passes. That's horrible to defend against! Heskey was offside 5 or 6 times, and when he wasn't offside he just stood on the ball and passed in back to the midfield. A defender's dream is to be able to see it all infront of him, it's so easy to defend against that.

We need to play someone in that postition who will create a bit more. Thoughts?

England are under too much pressure (as usual). Algeria are under virtually no pressure at all. If I'm Algeria I go all out in the first 10-15 minutes of the game, maybe get a goal, or just a decent chance then watch England self destruct.......

Also, make England a passing team (preferably left to right, and not up and down) and slow the game down....
If Algeria can get to half-time even, I think they have a decent shot....

    Why would England self destruct?

From where I'm sitting it's only Algeria I've seen self destruct over the past few years..... Remember the Egypt match?

England can afford to just be patient as they normally are and not rush the game.

You mean other than the fact that they are England? I don't see how Algeria can self destruct, what would have to happen for Algeria to be judged to have self destructed? 5+ goals for the English? Algeria have very little pressure on them......

5-0 prediction is a bit high for any match, Algeria knows England has the better team, that usually makes teams play defensive... if they play attacking (unsuccesfully) it may well be 5-0, but I don't really see that happening... They did make it through the qualifiers afterall, and though that doesn't make them great, it does mean that they have a fair amount of quality in their team...

I don't understand this reasoning - Algeria HAVE to win to have any hopes of progressing, how is that not a huge amount of pressure?

It looks like Green is being dropped, so at least the back line will have a bit more confidence(though unfortunately it looks like James, rather than Hart).

With Barry also back in the team and Gerrard in a more forward role, we should be much more dangerous tonight, we're always edgy in the first game anyway, so I reckon 3-0.

It's complete rubbish England always self destruct. Actually our record in the WC is very good really and we certainly don't have a record of self destructing unless you mean getting knocked out on penalties = self destructing?

Very little pressure for Algeria other than a win means they are out. Maybe you're inferring they don't really care about the wc?

With the likely result of the USA Slovenia game, England could be sitting pretty if they manage to get a result tonight.
