You know how people around here act. If there's 1 inch of snow in the forecast everyone rushes to the grocery store to buy staples.

It doesn't happen every year but there can definitely be dangerous precipitation. Do you recall the ice storm in November/December 06? Some areas lost power for days and some streets were not passable for quite a while. You wouldn't want to be stuck at Soccer Park during that.

I think maybe even 1 or 2 people died.

i emailed the ticket guy and here was the response. interesting....

We definably plan on having a fan forum of some type.

Update on the state of the team:

Athletica Season Ticket Holders will have first right to their seats for the Men's Team, and we are also taking $100 Reservations for 2010 Men's Season tickets. This is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor. Fans that put down their $100 Reservation will have the first right to seats after Athletica Season ticket holders so don't miss your shoot at scoring some of the best seats in the house. To Reserve your Season Tickets call 618.798.0127.

    Thanks

I was looking at the Vancouver Whitecaps website and found this quote from The Vancouver Sun 11/17/2009.

"We believe it will be innovative and might be a good model for other large stadiums around the country that might be good places to host MLS teams," he said.

Vancouver and Portland will become the 17th and 18th MLS franchises when they join the league in 2011 and Garber said there's a good chance Montreal will become the 19th MLS team.

"We have had productive conversations with Montreal to be our 19th team," he said. "We have not put a timetable as to when that team would join the league if we're able to reach agreement with them."

Vancouver and Montreal both plan to play in a new breakaway soccer league next season after team owners could not come to terms with the owners of United Soccer Leagues, the current league for both teams.

Garber said he scratches his head over the conflict that exists in second-tier soccer in North America.

"Soccer cannot compete today with the NFL or Major League Baseball or the NBA and to think that we would have dysfunction at any level is disturbing to me," he said.

Scratches his head? Disturbed? Please, how can this man say these things with a straight face!! This is exactly what he wanted. You take the top teams of the USL, and then in the state of the league report, say that the top team of the TOA is going to be MLS team 19.

good point. I lived there for a year. I did like to watch the Dynamo and it was fun to watch the Cards beat the Astros in the playoffs, but it was still Houston.

You'll notice that those who rip on St. Louis are never from Philly or Seattle or New Jersey where they to have huge soccer histories. They're always from some city where soccer histories started 20 years ago, not 80 years ago like St. Louis and the other cities I've mentioned.

But this guy is a particular tool.

He admits, "you’d know that my posts are generally bullshit-based, generally towards the direction of humor. I don’t doubt the history and heritage of soccer in St. Louis. And you’re right, my soccer knowledge is quite limited" but yet he still feels comfortable trashing us. Douche.

    Houston-ish
Think some of you in here may be taking a random blogger on a random opinion site a bit too seriously?

As a native St. Louisan, living in Houston, I must admit that my hometown simply doesn't offer the same soccer-viewing experience as the other U.S. cities I've lived in (Denver, LA, Chicago, Houston). The immigrant population (particularly from points south of the US) really makes for a stronger and more active fan base, just as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation immigrant populations did for StL in decades past.

Also, in my memory, soccer was a very exclusive sport growing up, even growing up and playing CYC ball. I didn't really start playing for fun until after leaving StL for UMR and points beyond. Everywhere I've played away from StL was much more open and friendly than any pickup or rec-league game played in my youth.

Sure, StL has a great history and a smattering of players in domestic and foreign leagues claim StL as where they are from... but I'll quickly admit that StL is no longer a focal point for the modern game, which I also believe is a strong argument against awarding it a franchise.

In hindsight, and in light of some of the posts on this forum, my image of the StL soccer supporter is pushing a sort of unfunny, Dangerfield-esque status, complaining about getting no respect. Sure, things were great when StL and NJ were the only shows in town, but now that the reach of the game is much more broad, what have we done to keep that respect we complain about not getting?

[Blind jump to a topic long since past] In comparison, the performance this year in Seattle has floored me. Does anyone on this board really think that a StL MLS team would draw close to what the Cards do on average, give or take a couple thousand? I don't think I ever spoke out against the SoundersFan (sic) guy that was quite vocal on here long ago, but if I did, I'd owe him an apology. Sorry guys, I don't think my hometown could field that kind of support.

Sidenote: How can a Dynamo fan be "Forever Orange" when their team is actually younger than Windows Vista? :D

also bit of interesting news. I've been trying to get on the stlsoccerunited website for like ten minutes and the website just will not work. I'm thinking their revamping the website inline with a name drop in the next couple days.

:) times sure are good. Now I just cant wait to see who ends up playing on the pitch

It's back up now. I don't remember seeing the "Men's Team" link across the top navbar, so maybe they were adding that. It goes to a page with links to tryout info and the same season-ticket signup form that we've seen before: http://stlouissoccerunited.com/St._Louis_Soccer_United/Mens_Team.html

While the answer to your question is no, I don't necessarily think it's a fair one. A STL MLS team wouldn't need to hold itself up to the most impressive display of support any MLS team has received in order to be a success. The Blues could outdraw the soccer team (though not by much, to be sure) and that wouldn't necessarily show that the city has failed to support the soccer team.

Is St. Louis the focal point of modern-day U.S. soccer? Of course not. No one can make that argument in good faith. But to say that we don't deserve a team at least in part because we've lost the title of Soccer City USA or some such is to move the goalposts quite a bit. It's not a game of one-upmanship whereby the next "successful" MLS team would need to outdo what Seattle has done.

I would, however, place a rather large wager on a St. Louis team's ability to consistently outdraw KC, Dallas and New England for starters, and arguably some other teams as well. And that, in my mind, would certainly make the franchise a good, healthy, successful one, even if we would never get 35,000 to show up.

That we'll probably never get the chance to prove that ... well, it kinda sucks.

Darn, sure wish the Memphis Rogues would be one of the teams in the NASL. Since Memphis will probably not be in talks for MLS for years to come if ever.
