Here is an analysis of the current points by country based on the first nation a player represented but according to the current nations of the world (splitting Russia, Ukraine etc for example). I've made exceptions to give Austria and Czech Republic half Bican's points each, and the same with Slovakia and Hungary for Kubala:
    Brazil 3016 points (23 players)
    Germany 1361 (11 players)
    Argentina 1346 (10 players)
    Holland 1205 (7 players)
    Italy 1191 (13 players)
    France 1077 (8 players)
    England 907 (7 players)
Hungary 648 (7 players including Kubala)
    Portugal 460 (3 players)
    Northern Ireland 396 (1 player)
    Russia 273 (1 player)
    Denmark 111 (3 players)
    Uruguay 105 (4 players)
    Spain 85 (5 players)
Austria 78 (2 players including Bican)
    Scotland 70 (1 player)
    Liberia 58 (1 player)
    Slovakia 42 (Kubala)
    Chile 39 (1 player)
    Paraguay 33 (1 player)
    Peru 33 (1 player)
    Wales 32 (1 player)
    Montenegro 31 (1 player)
    Romania 28 (1 player)
    Ukraine 27 (1 player)
    Serbia 24 (1 player)
    Mexico 23 (1 player)
    Bulgaria 22 (1 player)
    Czech Republic 18 (Bican)
    Sweden 12 (1 player)
    Poland 8 (1 player).

A little change to this analysis as I had Duncan Edwards down as German on my spreadsheet by mistake! Germany below Argentina now with England still behind France as adjusted below (using my original post):

That's OK Schwuppe, everyone including me seems to be adjusting their rankings. It's better to have as realistic a vote as possible I think.

Using the 10 votes so far this is how it pans out in each position/role. I've included players in two roles if they were probably equally good at both but if they were better at one then they aren't included in another even if they would be deemed good enough to be amongst the best in that role possibly. I hope you don't mind Peru that I've also adjusted the roles, merging defensive midfielders with central midfielders and re-defining support strikers as support attackers to include modern wing forwards as well as attacking inside forwards/deep lying strikers etc. I've put Platini as an attacking midfielder but generally players that played in central midfield, even if very creative/frequent goalscorers are included as central midfielders:

    Goalkeepers
17 Lev Yashin 288 (Soviet Union)
    40 Dino Zoff 77 (Italy)
    46 Peter Schmeichel 59 (Denmark)

spread the word because so far the vote is ridiculus, people vote players of today mostly.
    winning team so far:
Buffon, Roberto Carlos, Maldini, Beckenbauer, Zidane, Platini, Figo, Maradona, Pele.

Thanks Braine. I will check the honourable mentions list I did before and see if any of these players need to be added. The link is interesting and Dearman has put a lot of work in - he posts on Big Soccer too doesn't he (and is that Peru with the resume too?). I could include his top 50 in this vote too perhaps (and his 6 honourable mentions though actually they all have votes already)? Lubanski, Florian Albert, Abedi Pele and your countryman van Himst look to be the new mentions but I'll check again before I update the list. EDIT - at least Nesta and Careca too I think.

I'm picking a team Couper - there's nearly 90 players to choose from and about 20 managers. The players are specified as defenders, midfielders and attackers (plus goalies obviously) but although the likes of Garrincha, Best and Finney are down as forwards you can't pick a 4-2-4 (I wouldn't have done but it does stop you picking those sorts of players wide in a 4-4-2 - you can choose 2-3-5 though). Maradona and Cruyff have to be forwards as do Pele and Di Stefano so I'm going with a 4-3-2-1 which lets you pick 3 forwards as does 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 obviously. A better system might be to let you pick your own formation and players and put players where you want but I sort of understand they think it's easier this way. With wide-midfield options reduced by players being specified as forwards I sort of understand why Figo might be in overall so far - I'm deciding not to put him in my midfield though. It's a slightly flawed system but it's not like it's official. I wouldn't really expect Buffon to be in though even though he's obviously a great keeper.

I've done the ESPN vote now. Not surprisingly 4-3-2-1 is the most picked formation. I felt in honesty I had to vote for Yashin - Cafu, Beckenbauer, Moore, Maldini - Platini, Zidane, Charlton (did consider Figo for balance but the support fowards are quick and versatile enough; Michael Laudrup and Ranaldinho are also forwards so would have had to go with Figo if I wanted a dribbler in midfield) - Cruyff, Maradona - Pele (couldn't leave out any of those 3 but doesn't seem ideal and means no outright centre-forward or George Best for example)
For Coach I chose Michels but Ferguson leads the vote.
The votes for each player are tallied as percentages so not ideal but with that formation the current team (with luckily a reasonably balanced back four) looks like Buffon - Cafu, Beckenbauer, Maldini, R Carlos - Figo, Platini, Zidane - Pele, Maradona - Ronaldo. Zidane has the highest percentage of votes.

Actually I mis-read it, 4-2-3-1 with 2 forwards was the number 1 formation, with Giggs as a midfielder currently in the 'Winning Team' and not Ronaldo.

@ESPN Greatest Team of All Time:
I hate the formation restriction.
4 - 3 - 2 -1 is the only way to have Cruyff - Maradona - Pele and I really don't want to leave any of them out.

    Manager: Michels
    Yashin
    Facchetti - Beckenbauer - Moore - Maldini
    Varela - Platini - Matthäus
    Maradona - Cruyff
    Pele

    My actual choice would be:
    Yashin
Djalma Santos - Beckenbauer - Moore - Maldini
    Didi - Matthäus
Maradona - Di Stefano - Cruyff
    Pele

Oh the winning team is a joke ... Ryan Giggs :D
