the product of lazy journalism i suspect ,this reeks of familiarity and anglocentrism. even the dm's own jeff powell wouldnt go with this and those perculiar placings.....its like tim vickery talking about the great players when he actually has never seen any of them play as he's barely in his 40's.take it with a pinch of salt the names are there just in the wrong places
3 of the 10 are there not on merit but on familiarity and arguably bias, take a look at similar lists from around the world s.america, europe and there different from this ,considerably so.the best lists of players are from writers who have actually seen all the players there talking about.

    poor quality as previously mentioned

I'd say zidane is underrated a 5th. I'm going to be controversial and say he's first. Yes, the best playerof all time. I dont know how some people can have forgotten how good he was already. Even if you took the 3x World Player of the Year and ballon d'or awards, Champions League win, World Cup and European Championship wins away you'd still have one of the most gracefull and natural footballers ever.

If taken those away? Then that would leave Zidane with empty pocket and he would HARDLY to make his name in to legend list - NO ONE would remember Zidane - just like his early years 93-96 !

Couper, I noticed you used the 50 players given by the Mail for your vote. Upon request I changed the thread to a free-for-all Top 50 vote using any players. I had already voted so just changed mine by inserting two players and mentioning other candidates in a seperate post. I kept the Mail's ranking as 1 vote too but everybody else has been voting based on any player to play the game. So I don't mind if you want to alter your vote to include some of those other players you mentioned in whichever positions you want. I can easily re-do the updated rankings if you want to. After you've decided I'll do a post to show all the players with an honourable mention from myself, Peru FC and you (unless you include all of those 23 players in your top 50) but without any points as yet.

Very true. I see you kept the top 20 the same but had a rethink on the other places. I'll adjust the current standings now.

There are 102 players with votes now - it was a round 100 before Banks and Socrates were added just now. 37 of the current top 50 were in the original top 50.

Ok, I guess because of the limited number of players I'll probably be biased towards the creative and attacking players, but I'll try to include at least a few of the best defensive players as well. I won't include any goalies, though, as it's impossible to compare their value to field players in relative terms. Lets see...

    Pele (50)
    Diego Maradona (49)
    Alfredo Di Stefano (48)
    Franz Beckenbauer (47)
    Johan Cruyff (46)
    Garrincha (45)
    Michel Platini (44)
    Didi (43)
    Eusebio (42)
    Herd Muller (41)
    Ferenc Puskas (40)
    Jose Manuel Moreno (39)
    Zizinho (38)
    George Best (37)
    Zico (36)
    Marco Van Basten (35)
    Lothar Matthaus (34)
    Paolo Maldini (33)
    Frank Rijkaard (32)
    Romario (31)
    Ladislao Kubala (30)
    Daniel Passarella (29)
    Franco Baressi (28)
    Bobby Charlton (27)
    Zinedine Zidane (26)
    Ronaldo (25)
    Sandor Kocsis (24)
    Stanley Matthews (23)
    Gianni Rivera (22)
    Jairzinho (21)
    Omar Sivori (20)
    Dragan Dzajic (19)
    Bobby Moore (18)
    Roberto Rivelino (17)
    Giuseppe Meazza (16)
    Raymond Kopa (15)
    Ruud Gullit (14)
    Roberto Baggio (13)
    Falcao (12)
    Joszef Bozsik (11)
    Leonidas (10)

Thanks for the vote ASF. I was just compiling the current honourable mentions and already it's outdated as Jairzinho and Dzajic now have votes! I'll adjust it tomorrow with the current points too. EDIT Rijkaard is another with points now, so off the honouable mentions list too.

After 8 votes, including the Mail's and my own, based on a 4-4-2 formation the players highlighted below make it into the first, second, third and fourth select teams according to their points totals and their best position(s). I've not tried to pair a libero and marker in the teams but just put two centre-backs in. I have gone for a playmaker and a box to box midfielder in midfield and a support striker and centre-forward in attack. The top four in the standings can just fit in the same team I feel, as they'd be pretty much as good in the role they are in (Pele - support striker, Maradona - Playmaker, Cruyff - Left Wing, Di Stefano - Centre-forward) as any alternative role they could play. Pele and Di Stefano are both legendary goalscorers and conveniently Di Stefano is famous as a number 9 and Pele as a number 10, literally in terms of their shirt numbers. As Di Stefano has more points than any alternative centre-forward I think it's correct to do it this way. In reality Di Stefano and Pele would play as a partnership and share playmaking/goalscoring duties so I feel the criteria are still met (not like putting together Arshavin and Robinho, or van Nistelrooy and Vieri for example):
So in summary at this point:
    Team 1
    Yashin (Soviet Union)
    J. Andrade (Uruguay) * deemed good enough at right-back, otherwise Zanetti in Team 4 with Carlos Alberto in Team 1 etc
    Beckenbauer (Germany)
    Moore (England)
    Maldini (Italy)
    Best (N.Ireland)
Charlton (England) * deemed ok choice as box to box player though attacking
    Maradona (Argentina)
    Cruyff (Holland)
    Di Stefano (Argentina)
    Pele (Brazil)

    Team 2
    Schmeichel (Denmark)
    Carlos Alberto (Brazil)
    Baresi (Italy)
    Passarella (Argentina)
    Roberto Carlos (Brazil)
    Garrincha (Brazil)
    Matthaus (Germany)
    Platini (France)
    Rivelino (Brazil)
    Eusebio (Portugal)
    Puskas (Hungary)

    Team 3
    Banks (England)
    Cafu (Brazil)
    Charles (Wales)
    Figueroa (Chile)
    Facchetti (Italy)
    Matthews (England)
    Neeskens (Holland)
    Zidane (France)
Ronaldinho (Brazil) * deemed good enough at left wing otherwise Gento
    van Basten (Holland)
    Zico (Brazil)

    Team 4
    Zoff (Italy)
    D. Santos (Brazil)
Rijkaard (Holland) * maybe better in midfield?
    Krol (Holland)
    N. Santos (Brazil)
Gullit (Holland) * deemed good enough at right wing, otherwise Figo as Rummenigge no more of a right-winger than Gullit I feel
    Edwards (England)
    Didi (Brazil)
    M. Laudrup (Denmark) * deemed good enough at left wing otherwise Dzajic, if Gento in team 3
    Ronaldo (Brazil)
    R. Baggio (Italy).

Very difficult to make a top 50 since its hard to compare a goalkeeper with a d defender,a defender with a forward and so on...
I didn't selected current players ; Kaka,Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi you will not find on my list.
I've included R9 since his international carreer is over.

    the players that just didnt make the top 50 ;

Good list as well braine, but you're repeating José Manuel Moreno as 23th and 41th position mate.

Thanks for the vote Braine. Do you want to clear up whether you had a different player in mind for 23rd or 41st, or whether you'd put Moreno in 23rd then changed your mind and want to add another player to the bottom of your list from the ones you listed as being close? Then I'll post the current standings etc.
I haven't studied it in detail but I wonder if Peru and Braine, you have the most similar votes actually? I know both the recent Brazilian full-backs/wing-backs are in both your lists as well as Cubillas. I suppose in terms of personnel my vote was close to the Mail's but as already stated there would be a few minor differences towards the bottom end of my ranking if I hadn't used their ranking as the guide. Only Figo and Savicevic were going to be towards the top so I just put them in.
There are obviously quite a few historical players voted for now that weren't in the original list.... a lot of votes for Zizinho, Leonidas and Moreno in particular. Interesting as I've seen a few lists/books etc not including them but perhaps including Ademir Marques de Menezes, Piola, Sarosi etc.

    48. Alessandro Mazzola (Italy)
    49. Francisco Gento (Spain)
    50. Just Fontaine (France)

to be honest I've took the Peru top 100 and copy/paste the players in the position I think they belong to.
Only Gordon Banks was not listed in his previous top100.
but something got wrong with the copy/paste of position #23.
Its hard to make a top50 IMO,its more easy to make a top 10 by position for example...

OK Braine, I'll update shortly. Yeah I guess a top 50 or top 100 is a pretty uncertain task to complete. I think in a way it's easier to group players than to put them in individual positions. I understand too why you'd find it easier to pick top 10 by position (I guess you can compare your choices to Comme's greatest X of all-time lists).
Peru, I'll study your original list and update the points to account for the differences as well.
