Had anyone else seen the Dispatch this morning and Shawn's column on the stadium situation?? Seems like the team is thinking about the possibility of moving to the Arena District in the next 10 years.

This seems serious, if only due to the quotes from MM and a county commisioner. It could also be a kick in the butt to get the Fairgrounds folks more seroius about upgrades.

That's been the plan before we even built crew staduim. Interesting that the Hunt's did not want to give up controlling ownership of the Crew. I do like the Idea of the Stadium in the Brewery District, the guy from Vegas does not sound so bad now, but I still don't trust him.

It was the *original* plan, but I though they'd given that up when they built Crew Stadium as I think they have at least a 25 year lease if not a 50 year lease on the land (they own the stadium, of course--but not the land).

Every time McCullers answers questions about stadium improvements he answers saying that in the long term vision of the Crew does it make sense to spend that money or put it towards a new stadium. So it's nothing new that they're thinking about it.

i also understand that when it came out, beggars couldn't be choosers and that it represents an ideal more than anything.

I generally just hate lopsided stadiums in all sports. For some reason the sides have to be even or it just bugs me.

You must *hate* baseball then.... ;)

One of my favorite quirks is the "nook" in left field at Medlar Field (Penn State/State College Spikes stadium). When someone from the Spikes hits a home run this large blue muppet thing comes running out and does a dance: His name--"The Nookie Monster". Explain *that* to your kids....:D

Ditto. Paul Brown stadium on Cincy really bothers me for this reason. Since the current stadium was built with an Erector Set, couldn't we just pack it up and move it south?

That *was* mentioned in the story, as I recall, as being part of the plan of the Las Vegas guy that was thinking of buying the team.

Well I was more talking about stadiums that house rectangular fields in the middle. Baseball stadiums are cool with all their weirdness, but I just can't stand a football (either kind) stadium where there isn't some sort of balance to the sides.

Interesting. Most older European stadia were built imbalanced--they would build a stand and then when conditions and $$$ allowed, they'd add another and so on (and we used to do some of that too--as that's how I think the Polo Grounds (NY Giants baseball stadium) was built. Some of the older stadia are being "renovated" in the same way--which can be interesting. In Cologne, an oval with a track (that was new for the 1974 World Cup) became a box without a track, and I think they did the same in Duesseldorf. Most football stadia are somewhat imbalanced due to the presence of a press box on one side, though the tendency now is to build a corrosponding club level on the other side. But it was that kind of infrastructure (and the paint) that lead folks where I went to school to call Beaver Stadium "Battleship Beaver" before the two upper endzone deck were added.

I'm not sure what the deal is with that though. I love the Polo Grounds layout and many of the other quarks in baseball stadiums (Fenway is probably the coolest stadium I've ever been in and I hate the Red Sox), and I don't necessarily mean press box on one side and without on the other, that's a limitation I understand. I just think it looks really funny when one side of the stadium has a roof, or a really deep out of bounds, or a high arching seating arangement on only one side.

For reference, that stadium I think in Greece where there are only stands on one side and they slope up in the middle. That just bugs me.

Didnt we just have a thread dedicated to the thought of a new stadium, say this time last year? We are still a good 10-15 years away from the thought of a new stadium and for it to take place we had better start putting a lot more butts in the seats because if it comes to a public vote (tax$$$) its not going to happen because not enought people care about it. Build a new stadium for OSU football, 90% of the public would say yes. A New stadium for a Professional Sports team, dont think so. Especially with the crap going on with the Blue Jobs lease.
Im not saying I dont want a new stadium. I would love going to downtown for games and pre-gaming in the Arena District. However, its not going to happen. Not now, not in five years from now, not in twenty. Not unless we have a major shift in public opinion about the Crew in Central Ohio.

Wasn't it a 25 year deal with an option for another 25 years?

if there is a new stadium, due to the historic nature of CCS i think it should be based on the design of the one we have now.

Here I was thinking along the lines with the "I don't like lopsided stadiums" and then you post this. That's friggin' beautiful.
