Thanks, if I never remember that moment again it will be too soon. Your comment actually made me wince...
Selfishly I want Landon to stay in the EPL. I want to watch him to play in the most important games; I want him to prove to the world that the US isn't second class. The quote that got me (and thanks to Arteta's girl again) was when he said: "because I genuinely love America." Some people who haven't lived or traveled abroad will not understand this but there is a huge difference in the comfort level of European countries compared to America. It's tough to pinpoint and you can't really measure it but the US is a much more comfortable place to live than anywhere else in the world. The luxury that we have day-to-day is second to none, and it sounds like LD appreciates that. I'm not bashing Europe because we have our faults as well, but if you're used to a certain level of comfort it is hard to conform to less.
I prefer "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally*" * Not that I'm calling Ives a blind squirrel** ** Not that theres anything wrong with being a blind sqirrel
That's just silly talk - you're comfortable with what you know. But I'm not sure we really want to debate that here.
I enjoyed the article in the Everton magazine except for this bit, which is false: "With San Jose having traded away Donovan’s rights when he returned to Germany, he was available to the team at the head of MLS’s ‘allocation order’." San Jose did no such thing. AEG allowed him to move to LA against MLS rules.
I have spent several years living abroad and all I can say to this post is WTF? Way to generalize and apply your own feelings on it to everyone else alive. It's all good and well to have grown up in one place and appreciate living there as a result, but call me crazy, I actually liked those backwardass countries I lived in, with their universal health care, widespread mass transit, and - gasp - power lines buried beneath the ground instead of blocking out the sun. The gall of those heathens! What am I saying? Guess they just weren't born as lucky as we here in America.
I take it as that he has learned the art of being comfortable and happy wherever he is. He's repeatedly said that he's learned to live in the moment. Of course he loves America, but he could be happy living elsewhere. After reading Grant Wahl's article, I'm firmly convinced that if Everton come up with the money, he would transfer permanently.
Hell Yeah...y'all can borrow him, I wanna keep him. I wann go out to RFK after the Workd Cup and chant jokes about his hairline and his whining and watch him try to beat us single-handidly again*. * I expect him to fail at this, for once
She's part of the race that only exists in Liverpool, known as the orange people. It's a pretty common thing here. Fortunately, I'm not part of it
Who had post #841? I swear to God, when I read that, I thought, when is a Quakefan gonna comment on this? Shouldn't take long.
Umm, have you seen this? They mostly hang in NEw JErsey, but you can find them on Lon Gisland as well. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=guido+pictures&FORM=BIFD#
Just going to add that anyone's comfort level in any location other than a country mired in utter despotism, can be conformed to your liking when you're on a $30,000/wk salary. That behind us - here's my take on the whole where I prefer Landon to play. I am a fan of Landon Donovan. I cheer for him to do well personally, which also means contributing to team victories, not just personal score sheets. Just like we want to see any team perform in a highly competitve environment for them (challenges and competition is the root of sport), I want to see LD play against the best in the world - simply because I am a fan. That LD playing in EPL might help the USA by keeping him slightly sharper - cool. Seeing him play in MLS for long term validation of the league - that's cool too. I enjoy it most when the USA plays in the World Cup, or in big tournaments against big teams - because it is the ultimate challenge. The same as when you're a fan of an individual player. Just not as exciting when he scores a nice goal against Chicago as it is against an EPL team. Period. Why was it more satisfying to see the USA beat Spain than to beat a CONCACAF team? Same scenario. I think there is a very defensible argument that by playing in his prime in the EPL, he can still return to MLS in 2014 and accomplish just as much for this country and that league 25 years from now. Just trying to express a viewpoint I don't see represented here much - it's not about the USA, it's not about MLS per se. With LD representing what I think is the best field player we've produced, there is a sense of nationalism to it that is separate from the national team itself. Being a fan of a player, representing our country and national team while not playing on it.
Allowed, coerced, whatever you want to call it. According to Landon's mom he was coerced. The carrot was great of course, the stick was "There isn't going to be a San Jose team next season." And since AEG owned both SJ and LA, their case was pretty convincing. Of course that next season was SJ's incredible 2005 campaign, which ended prematurely when they ran into... Landon Donovan. I sure hope he stays at Everton or goes somewhere I can root for him.
