Well folks, it looks like we have a new member here in the Scandinavian Forum who is volunteering to step up and take the lead on an Icelandic Premier League thread. :)

I know many of us look forward to coming here daily to read and understand more about the leagues, players, supporters and rumors that make up the various brands of Scandinavian football, so this is a welcome addition.

Per the other league threads here, please feel free to comment, ask questions or provide your own findings about the Úrvalsdeild and its clubs!

Thanks for stepping up iauk and welcome to our little corner of BigSoccer, we look forward to your updates and contributions!

The Icelandic leagues do not start until May, so the clubs have been busy playing indoor friendlies, there are now many indoor halls around the country with full size pitches.

There will be some competitive football coming soon as the League Cup (deildarbikar) starts on 20th February.

    Re: Icelandic Úrvalsdeild 2010 [R]

The 2010 Urvalsdeild will be sponsored by PEPSI and will be known as PEPSI deildin. There are 12 clubs playing home and away with the bottom two relegated to 1.deild.
    The 2010 clubs are.
    Breidablik (Kopavogur)
    FH (Hafnarfjordur)
    Fram (Reykjavik)
    Fylkir (Reykjavik)
    Grindavik
    Haukar (Hafnarfjordur)
    IBV (Vestmannayjaer)
    Keflavik
    KR (Reykjavik)
    Selfoss
    Stjarnan (Gardabaer)
    Valur (Reykjavik)

FH will once again be favourites to win the league (they have been champions 5 times in the last 6 years), KR will challenge them but FH are now considered the best team in Iceland and with the biggest budget. FH signed Iceland international keeper Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson from HK during the winter. Valur,Fram and Keflavik will fight for a Europa league place.

Selfoss will play in the top division for the first time in their history but as soon as they were promoted they lost their coach Gunnlaugur Jonsson to Valur. The other promoted team Haukar have only played one season in the top division before and that was in 1979, they will share Valur's ground the Vodafonevollur as their own Asvellir is not in good condition.

If anyone is looking for one of Iceland's most famous clubs IA, well they can be found playing in the second level (1.deild). They were relegated in 2008 and were hot pre season tips for promotion last year but it was a disaster and they finished in 9th place, at one point relegation to 2.deild looked a possibility. I am confident that IA will be stronger this year and will be fighting for promotion back to the top division :)

    Re: Icelandic Úrvalsdeild 2010 [R]

    Interesting topic.

It seems there are almost no players in the Icelandic league who are not either Icelandic, Scandinavian or British.

    exceptions:
Grindavik: MF Mounir Ahandour (Morocco), DF Gilles Mbang Ondo (Gabon)
    Kevlavik: DF Alen Sutej (Slovenia)
IBV: DF Jonah Long (USA), DF Andy Mwesigwa (Uganda), MF Tony Mawejje (Uganda)

Uganda? Not exactly a big producer of footballers. IBV seems to be in the sunny south of Iceland so it must be more attractive to Africans.

KR have Mark Rutgers (Holland), Jordao Diogo (Portugal) and Prince Rajcomar (Holland)
    Breidablik have Evan Schwartz (USA)
Keflavik have Simun Samuelsen (Faroe Islands)

Very interesting thread. Do you by any chance have the attendances for the teams or who the most supported teams are?
