For me, DC, LA, and CHI are definitely the class of the league historically. The next group of three is KC, SJ, and Houston. KC has had more success than many think, SJ has a SS and 2 MLS Cups, and Houston's history has been short, but they have made 2 good cup runs. These top account for all 12 MLS Cups (but not this year) and 9/13 Supporter's Shields. The only exceptions being the Crew's 2, and one from Tampa and Miami. If Columbus wins, I'd bump them into this group, they'd have 1 MLS Cup, 2 SS, and 1 USOC. Giving them more "trophies" than any team save the big 3, though less MLS Cups than SJ or Houston. Plus, then you'd have 7 teams accounting for all the MLS Cups and 11/13 SS, with the other two won by defunct teams. NE for all its success, has no trophy to show. EDIT: A column for the all time series/round record might also be informative. I know Columbus is 6-7 all time. Wins: 97 Tampa, 98 NY, 99 Tampa, 02 SJ, 08 KC, CHI. Losses: 96 Tampa; 97, 98, & 99 DC, 01 SJ, 02 NE, 04 NE. If we could have avoided the damn DC dynasty, who knows?

After CLB's loss, NER have sealed 4th-place by points this season, as no other teams can overtake them in this campaign, nor can they overtake 3rd-placed CHI. 3. The "*" mark was removed for CLB as they are out of the playoff. 3 more teams will have their "*" removed this week as the conf semi concludes.

PPG isn't really a good measure for playoffs success since missing them completely doesn't hurt. I was going to suggest points per postseason, but the different formats messes with that too.
Agree, kind of noticed that when computed the PPG, will work out something along that line after the conf. finals. However, do bear in mind that this method still has a short coming, it can't differentiate teams that have: - never made playoffs (so far only TFC is in this category, but there could be more in future), and - made playoffs but lost all their games & knocked out in the 1st round, thus amassing 0 points, which is effectively the same as non-playoff teams. (Seattle could have been in this category for this season, had they not gotten a tie with Houston in the 1st leg of conf. semis.)

With this new ranking criteria: - Houston are tops, as one of the only 2 teams with 100% playoffs apperances and 2 titles in a relative short history of 4 seasons. - 4x Champs DCU are only 4th due to their surprisingly low P.O. %. - NER are the highest-place teams without a championship. - '09 Surprise Package RSL are just 9th, rather than 2nd if simply ranked by PPG.

I really like the work you've put into this! Good job. I think you might be making a false distinction with PK wins counting as ties... Italy didn't tie France in the 2006 World Cup final - they won on PKs. The first 90 min ended i a draw but the game was played for 120 minutes PLUS PK's and they WON that game. On the other hand, if you're only going to count a "regular game" then overtime wins have to count as less as well since a normal game ends at 90 min. However, for playoffs, DRAWS don't exist in the single elimination games. The games end with a distinct winner. Neither Italy nor France believe their 2006 World Cup final ended in a DRAW. How would your system score a Home & Away series where one team wins the first game, loses the second (first 90 min)... but the series goes to overtime in the 2nd game (sum score from both games) and they win in overtime. Game 2 wasn't a win, since they lost it YET they won the series/game? I think for consistency's sake there is a distinction between a Home & Away versus a Single Elimination.
It doesn't matter what they believe. I think he's actually doing it according to FIFA policy - a penalty kick win or loss is considered a draw when calculating w-d-l ratings, points, and percentages. At least that's what my memory tells me.
Really? In league play you have draws, points, and standings. In elimination rounds of cups you don't have points or standings, every game ends with a winner or loser.
Thanks for the comments, this was why I have also worked out the "All-Time MLS Playoff Series Won/%" Table on Wiki, where teams either won or lost a playoff series, . In page 146 of the 2009 Official Playoff Guide, MLSNet did include the "ALL-TIME MLS POSTSEASON STANDINGS", which was very similar to what I've worked out (containing tied games), though it didn't specify the number of SO wins for '96-99. The same table also appaered in page 128 of the 2007 Official PO Guide, .
By the way, anyone has the 2008 (& earlier) playoffs guide? I could only find the Spanish version for 2008...
