As always, any result is fair game here. If you don't want to know the score, then turn off your computer.

I would love to know how people can justify Florida and Alabama as the top two teams when they've looked like ass for the past three weeks. The SEC championship can't come soon enough.

Since these "other teams" exist only to provide DC United an opponent to play, I posit that because DC United has elected not to play anymore, these other teams do not exist.

Alabama has looked like ass for 3 weeks? They had a tough game against Tennessee, but they have otherwise looked great. Who do you propose jump them? Texas, that almost lost at home to Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago, who was using their no-name backup qb? USC, with a loss? Boise State, playing noone? SEC is the best conference in football, has been for a long time, and has 2 undefeated teams. There is no question they should be 1 and 2, in whatever order.

Clearly, the Texas Longhorns should be #1

Texas always plays Oklahoma on a neutral field, The Cotton Bowl. Besides, that was a rivalry game and only on rare occasions are they blowouts.

U-17 World Championship (on ESPNU), USA V Spain. USA up a goal early. Spain had a player sent off in the second minute.

U-17 USA V Spain. Spain have leveled, 1-1. USA defense looks slow (to react) and clumsy. The USA does have speed up top.

    asitis

Edit: Spain scores again (excellent finish). US defense totally outclassed by Spain.

They had a "tough" game against a 3-3 team. According to everyone on TV (and anyone who's watched Tennessee), they should have blown them out of the water. Instead, they stumbled to a victory and won on a blocked field goal. And on that same play, Mount Cody decided to take off his helmet before the refs blew their whistle to end the game. He should've been flagged for it, which would've set Tennessee up for another, closer field goal. We complain about the refs in MLS, but that's at least the third SEC game that I've seen on TV that was decided by the refs.
Texas and Oklahoma are always involved in tough games. If you're going to fault Texas, then why not Florida versus LSU?
Strongest? Yes. Best? That changes from year to year. Last year, the Big 12 was ridiculous, while the SEC was clustered around a few teams.

UT has been one of the most consistent teams in the SEC. Unfortunately, they consistently underperform and fail to play anywhere near their potential. They haven't even pulled any aspirations out of their assess the past couple of seasons. All they have now is a coach who can talk and still back away from confrontation when he is scared.

I feel an ACC rant coming. Until then... ******** the ACC.

True. The MLS season is over. Too bad they don't have a playoff system or something. Maybe the top four teams from each conference or the like. Could sell!

I've been able to hold back and not post any game or post-game comments about Virginia Tech in the Official Barra Brava OT Throwball Thread, but every week things about Tech and especially the ACC piss me off even more. For whatever reason, I've actually typed Virginia Tech post-game rants in a notepad++ tab every week. The following was part of a rant from the first week of the college football season after Tech lost in the Georgia Dome to Alabama and before a classic FSU-Miami game.
For what it's worth, people who know me know I've long been a fan of the ACC as an athletic and academic conference and especially liked ACC basketball growing up. I liked the soccer and the Olympic/"non-revenue" sports, but I often hated the schools because of the attitudes of some of the fans.

At the root of everything is money. The ACC should want to maximize revenue. Ideally, every athletic program should be profitable. My problems with the conference begin with the current outlook. I don't believe the conference is doing all they should to present themselves as an elite basketball and football conference and I fear drastic changes will not happen until after the broadcast contracts are renegotiated. The ACC isn't where it should be since the expansion and it will be interesting to see how the conference comes out of the broadcast negotiations next year since the conference is likely going to bundle basketball and football. While football shouldn't have to be the revenue sport, it is a revenue sport and should be treated as such.

The ACC expanded to make more money. Football can easily be the biggest revenue source for athletic departments instead of basketball. They wanted a conference championship game and the money that would bring to the conference. The conference wanted to expand their geographical footprint and had their eyes on Big East programs. The timing was perfect since the top of the Big East was discussing their own expansion plans and money distribution and commitment to athletics in general was in question. Unfortunately for the ACC, the schools considered in the expansion showed signs of the conferences mixed mind going forward as a football conference(geographic footprint versus tradition/potential, Tobacco Road/traditional ACC, private schools versus public schools). Many argue about the expansion and schools that left the Big East. Virginia Tech had long wanted to be part of the ACC, but was committed to the Big East as long as they could have the commitment of the other schools in the Big East in writing. Virginia Tech was part of the lawsuit against the schools leaving the conference because they had a deal that nobody would leave. Miami wasn't leaving without Boston College. Virginia ended up fighting for Virginia Tech over Syracuse to be the third team added to the conference(although eventually the second) and with a little nudge from the Governor. Tobacco Road did not want Virginia Tech in the ACC although the school was a relatively large state school that was showing a dedication to improving the entire athletic program and academics(including partnerships with UMD, UVA, NC State and Wake Forest), and was proven as a legitimate football program with a fanbase that travels. The ACC thought about gaining media markets more than they considered culture and relevance within the markets. Of the many things the ACC overlooked were the fanbases, practicality and travel expenses.

The next short-sighted football move by the ACC was the placement of the ACC Championship game. I understand Jacksonville put up the most money. Most accept that the league expected regular Miami-Florida State championship games. The actual Miami fanbase isn't that large and doesn't travel any better than most ACC schools. They have a lot of bandwagon and fairweather fans who are all over the country. They haven't regularly filled the Orange Bowl/Dolphins Stadium in 10 years. Virginia Tech and Clemson have good fans who travel. NC State has decent fans who support their team. UNC fans travel when their team has hype behind it or the team is doing well. Although Georgia Tech is the school closest to Jacksonville after FSU, they have a disproportionately small group of fans who support the team. For the most part, the ACC doesn't travel well. All of that means the ACC was relying on Florida State fans to sell out championship games in Florida that were in an area that is a good distance from ACC schools. The same can be said about Tampa. Although much closer to Miami, it is even farther outside of ACC travel/territory. I know there were conflicts with Charlotte regarding scheduling, money and rights and the ACC would love Atlanta(SEC has dibs), but Charlotte should have been the primary target with places like FedEx also a high priority. Outside of the first ACC Championship Game between Florida State and Virginia Tech (which was not sold out), the attendance has been very disappointing. Jacksonville isn't an exciting city and unbelievably even repeated trips to Miami for football get old (regular season/Miami and Orange Bowl). As it is, schools lose money to be in the championship game and can lose even more money visiting a site twice.

While the conference took steps to solidify themselves as a football conference, most of the schools haven't done their part. The commitment to the fans and from the fans is often lacking. They all haven't invested in creating better gameday experiences. ACC facilities are already some of the best in the country, but many of the gameday atmospheres and presentations are lacking. Schools need to help create, allow and embrace a football culture. Many schools are basketball schools with a football program. Fair or not, football programs bring a lot to a school and should not be on the same level as field hockey or lacrosse if the athletic department is serious about their investment and commitment to growing the program.

I've been in a few of interesting discussions with people on the last thing I want to mention for now, officiating. The officiating can be bad. Somehow, that's not the entire problem though. I don't mind bad officiating that much as long as it is consistent. The problem is I grew up watching ACC basketball. Everyone knows certain teams were more likely to get assistance from officiating or that all-stars couldn't be touched while most underclassmen had to earn respect from the officials in the ACC. To a certain extent, the same is seen in other ACC team sports. If you look at a player on UNC's women's soccer team the wrong way, you understand that's going to be a free kick. The problem with all of that is traditional ACC schools and Tobacco Road are protected over what could actually be best for the conference. Imagine if Georgia Tech's illegal blocks and movement before the snap were ever called or if Miami had a couple breaks in their game against Clemson. The ACC could have two teams in great position to be in BCS games at the end of the season. That money goes to the conference first. I know it's not a science, but I'm always noticing spots. There were three or four spots in the GT-VT game that really stood out to me. On one, there was a closeup of the official actually moving the ball while they were measuring for the first down. Every week we see the officials protecting high ranked teams in the SEC, Big 12, Big East, Big 11 and Pac-10. In the ACC, traditional teams are protected at the expense of highly ranked teams.

Having said all of that, please understand that it is nearly 3 in the morning and this post doesn't contain a bit of research. I expect this post is full of grammar and spelling errors. Also, I realize the ACC is still in good shape and is in much better financial shape than the Big East.

Sitruc's fifth doctoral thesis was on the ACC, apparently. The other four were regarding Canadian dominance in curling, Statistical analysis of 20 years in the American Cribbage Congress, doping in the US Association of Rock Paper Scissors, and the international growth of the Unicycle Hockey League.

Seriously, what do you do??? :D
