can someone explain what is going on with Yura?
Rumor has it he missed practice (yesterday?) not because of injury but rather an argument... the rumor is that it was about the deal with randers... who didnt see this one coming

Actually impressed Yura & RSL managed to go a full two/three weeks before the inevitable. Still, that $250K opening bid mocks us now. RSL's half portion might have gone a long way toward getting Findley re-inked.

    Wasn't Garth's finest hour.

so what do you do if you are RSL (and this rumor is true)?
get rid of Yura but have nothing in exchange?

I've no idea if the rumor is true or not, but the only real way the Yura deal could have ended well is if RSL sold him (even if it was for nothing more than some smoked herring and a case of Carlsberg) AND still managed to make the playoffs. Doesn't look like either will happen, and things could get ugly with him down the stretch.

Is the $125k treated as allocation money? Or does it simply go to the club?

I'm not sure how these funds work with the MLS system but are they usuable to buy down salary (a la allocation) or don't count against the cap?

FM, I think you ignore a dangerous precedent to find fault with the FO. Two wrongs don't make a right (assuming they handled his negotiation wrong a year ago, allowing a 3rd party to steam roll you doesn't make it better).

Lescott with Everton is in the same situation - he wants out but he's under contract. Does it make it right/honorable for him to not give 100%?

In my mind it doesn't, the club isn't allowed to pay less than 100% when they're unhappy with the player... thus, at least the expectation should be that the player lives up to his promises.

Re: 2009 RSL In-Season News Thread, Part IV

I don't think that would have meant a good ending for RSL, it would have just sent the message to future Yuras that if you want out of an RSL contract just get a pre-contract with someone else and get your photo taken holding up your future club's jersey... then they'll let you out under fear that you'll play poorly or won't give it your all.

Randers FC should have negotiated with RSL privately (like what happens 99% of the time) because once they made it public RSL had no option but to take the route they did - to expect players to honor their contracts.

What does it say anyway? To Randers FC, having Yura for half a season was worth $250K... to RSL, losing Yura for half a season was worth $750K. But the most telling thing, is that Randers didn't budge off their $250K offer (they simply never responded to RSL's counter). That's not a negotiation. Had Randers negotiated in good faith, Yura would be in Denmark now, because I'm certain RSL would have taken less than their opening price.

Re: 2009 RSL In-Season News Thread, Part IV

I think the team's desire that Yura give 100% is certainly there, and that's what's expected of him as contracted player, but is that the case in reality? Not necessarily. Lescott is a good example, as is Vince Carter in Toronto several years ago. Both pouted and mailed it in 'til they got their way (or at least Joleon hopes to) and, with guaranteed contracts, there's not much the club can do except find a way to move them out and hope to get some value from them.

The FO fumbled a bit in not getting value (albeit small) while they had the chance, but Yura, if he is indeed giving less than is expected of him for whatever reason (looking ahead, not wanting to get injured, etc.), isn't helping matters either. As a still-early-in-his-career player, I don't think that's a stigma he wants to be associated with. VC is several years hence of the Toronto episode, and that still hangs with him. If the Lescott thing drags out, he won't shake it quickly either.

Re: 2009 RSL In-Season News Thread, Part IV

That's my point - this is a "lose, lose" situation created by Yura, his agent, and Randers FC.

Sure, they don't have to like what RSL offered a year before but trying to leverage someone out of a contract is dishonorable - just as it would be if RSL tried to get out of paying a player on a technicality or intimidation because it didn't feel the player was worth what they agreed to pay him.

Plus, once it goes public, then suddenly RSL has to worry about the message that is sent to current & future players... hence, picking up $125K for a ~$19 million revenue company where you send a message you can be easily leveraged may not be worth the $125K. I wouldn't do it.

Personally, I've never been a fan of Yura's 100%. He's a streaky player at best, and the only consistent thing he does is hit shots at the keeper or over the goal. I think benching him may be the best thing for RSL. Move Espy into the center, and play Cox on the wing. RSL would then have a forward who knows how to strike the ball on frame, and a left footed winger who can cross the ball. Yura isn't the best option on the team, so why treat him like he is?

Re: 2009 RSL In-Season News Thread, Part IV

Is there anything in Yura's contract that keeps him from being benched or loaned out the rest of the season? I think it would be comical if they loaned him out to a USL team for the rest of the season. Don't reward him by complying with the situation to send him to Randers, and show that RSL won't give him first team minutes for trying to stronghand the organization. I'd get a good laugh out of it, especially if he never saw another minute with the first team. But maybe that's just me...

Because he was the league leader in shots on frame... But we all know half those shots were weak shots right at the keeper when he probably could've found an outlet to the wing player for a goal. I will honestly be happy to see him go. I like the fact that he was goal driven and wanted to score, but his lack of field vision and inability to pass or put the shots in the back of the net was really dissapointing

the reason I think this rumor about issues with Yura is true is the comments Johnson had (on keepinitrealsl) about how that has become a distraction.
Will usually isnt the kind of guy to throw anybody under the bus (hell he gave Kreis props for that red card that had everyone rolling their eyes) so this means something happened... to me at least

If Yura is gone to Randers that has happened since yesterday afternoon. Haven't heard anything about Clint. He was at practice Wednesday and seemed like everything was normal.

The piece that nobody is talking about is Randers current situation: Read here

Re: 2009 RSL In-Season News Thread, Part IV

Wow, great update. That certainly does affect Randers' negotiating position. Then again, RSL's tenuous-at-best grips on the playoff hunt certainly don't do much for their side either. I wonder if the league-wide results this weekend (RSL's included) might influence their willingness to let Yura walk and start giving time to the guys they know will be around for next season.

Re: Mathis, I would not be as shocked as others to see him retire or be waived in the short-term. His presence, character, and relationship with JK are probably not doing much for locker room morale, nor are they for the rest of the roster's confidence in JK's leadership (JK sets an example...Clint follows suit...bad things come from it). With playoff hopes hanging by a string and Mathis' play taking a turn for the worse lately (both skill- and attitude-wise), is there a good reason for him to hang around? If we do well without him this weekend and get a result - why put him back on the field? If we don't do well without him and fail to get a result - we're virtually out of the playoffs anyways, why not get the newer/younger guys time? Is his really in RSL's plans for next season? I don't know. I agree, first half of this year he was one of the best, if not the best, player on the pitch. But where does he fit long-term?

No way Mathis is gone, thats just smoke and mirrors and bad DesNews comments.

Now I can't imagine why Yura is still here though. Randers, just send another check and he is yours!

Don't expect to see Yura much again...based on Beckerman's comments

IMO, the lost transfer money ($250K=first offer) is especially painful b/c this exact inevitability was so predictable.

That would be a sad way for Yura to leave. I think most of us would loved to have applauded him off the field in the 88th minute after scoring a hat trick. Or maybe just scoring.

holy hell, someone PLEASE teach Beckerman how to talk...
with that said, this is a sad way to lose Yura no matter how you look at it. Sure he wasnt the best finisher (we are in the MLS, remember that) but he scored important goals for this club and you cant deny that.
I would give him a standing ovation and farewell, but maybe thats just me

    Yeah, I'm also puzzled.

Look. Garson received/rejected yet another cash "last offer" last week. Yet...Garson decided to "punish" Yura (McCabe's verb) by leaving him home in SLC. The lingering injury is clearly bullshit--Yura said as much.

Either take the cash or play him. Stubbornly doing neither is needlessly jeopardizing Findley's future here as well. And as both Beckerman & Will Johnson's recent comments demonstrate--it's toxic for club morale.

    Botched much?
