Does anyone know if all seven WPS teams will paricipate in the US Open Cup this year?

That's a great question. Ask Peter Wilt and see what he says.
I would love to see a US Open Cup where all teams can participate, pro and am and those in between. I'm sure there are those in USL-W who would love to go head to head with the WPS just like MLS vs. USL on the mens side. That may also be a way for those in the WPS who get limited playing time to play.

US Women`s Open Cup is curently running by USASA as a part of US National Cups. By loosing a strongests men`s teams to Lamar US Open Cup in 1999, USASA seems like convert the Open Cup to a recreational tournament.
If WPS teams participates in Open Cup format tornament, this really needs to be run by USSF.
Anyway will be great to see WPS, WPSL and W-League teams compete together.

I just received a twitter message from Peter Wilt and he says the WPS will not play for the cup this year but hopefully in 2010.

Ah, so glad I found this thread - with the STL Lions qualifying for the Men's USOC, I was going to ask this over in the WPS forum - glad I did a little research! =-)
Too bad about this year, but with as messed-up as the WPS schedule currently is, I'm kinda glad they skimmed over it for this season. Can't wait for next year, though! It'll be interesting to see what WPS's qualification process will be, if any, considering there should be more than eight WPS teams next year. I'm highly uninformed on the issue, what's the current format for the Women's USOC?

I can understand why WPS would stay out in its first season but I hope the WPS teams play in the Open Cup next season.

Good question. I can't even find anything about the results of the 2008 Cup.

I never even knew there was such a thing. It's something I've dreamt of for a while. WPS (or WUSA back then)/W-League/WPSL was what I was envisioning. I think it would be great.

    Yeah....

    http://www.sover.net/~spectrum/usopen.html
(bottom of the page list the women's stuff)

This was the only thing I could find even suggesting a women's USOC existed (besides a few mentions on WPSL-team Wikipedia articles, which were unfortunately unreferenced). Last updated May 08, so that might explain why the 08 results aren't on it, if it even happened. =-/
Not sure I even 100% trust this site itself, either.

I wish the USASA page listed the runner-ups as well....
The two lists line up pretty well, except they disagree on who won in 1997. So was it Sacramento or Dallas?

And what's the story on this year's Cup?

Finding info on this is impossible. To be honest, I haven't heard a single coach even talk about it from WPS or W-League. I've heard pretty much nothing of it. I feel like I am in the twilight zone.

As I understand it, you won't hear anything about it from the W-League perspective because W-League teams are forbidden from playing WPSL teams, something participating in the Open Cup would require.

Somewhere on here Peter Wilt mentions that WPS would like to get involved in 2010. That's pretty much the only WPS mention I've seen.

Forbidden? Enlighten me on this. Are we talking childish feud or something like NCAA legality?

Childish feud is my understanding. The WPSL broke away from the W-League back in 1997 and have not yet been forgiven. The only WPSL - W-League match I've ever heard of was last year's Soccer Hall of Fame game which had the W-League Washington Freedom playing the WPSL SoccerPlus Connecticut, and I think that was only because it was pretty much an invitation from the HoF, which would have been hard to turn down.

Then how exactly did FCI win it last year?

Well, perhaps I am mistaken, but that's the first I'd heard about it, and all the teams that participated in the final in previous years were clearly WPSL teams. I do also recall a discussion along the lines I've been stating somewhere on this forum, though I can't find it now.

So perhaps all is forgiven - here's even a writeup on the W-League site:

    http://wleague.uslsoccer.com/home/268886.html

EDIT: I did some more digging and found this post, among others:

"That is because if a W-League team tries to play a team from WPSL, they can get fined by the league... (Merrill Ring article is my source) "

Several replies from different people indicate agreement with this, but obviously the thread is several years old, so perhaps the policy has changed.

So there is no official link to a site where they talk about a Women US open cup?

We at TheCup.us have always wanted to put together a page for the Women's Open Cup, but the information available is pretty hard to find. You might have to settle for a list of champions, because if you think the Men's US Open Cup gets ignored ...

Well, I've browsed around a bit more, and I think the USASA runs the cup instead of USSF, so that might be why.
If you go to http://www.usasa.com/nationalcups10/index_E.html it looks like there was a 2010 Cup (and a 2009 Cup if you follow the link on the right sidebar) though my connection isn't letting me open either results list.
