Abby Wambach is first US Player of the Month

First American to Notch the Honor in WPS

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 4, 2009) – Washington Freedom forward Abby Wambach has been named the WPS Player of the Month for July, leading her team to a 3-2-1 record during the month of July and putting the Freedom on the cusp of a playoff berth going into the final week of the WPS Regular Season. Wambach scored four goals and had one assist, bringing her total to six goals on the season, tied for fourth-most among league leaders. Highlights for Wambach included a two-goal game in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Chicago Red Stars, and the only goal in a pivotal 1-0 victory over the Boston Breakers at the Maryland SoccerPlex on July 29.

Wambach becomes the first U.S. National Team player to win the WPS Player of the Month Award after Kelly Smith (England, Boston Breakers), Sonia Bompastor (France, Washington Freedom) and Camille Abily (France, Los Angeles Sol) won it in April, May and June. Each voting group – fans, teams and media – accounts for one-third of the final tally. Chicago Red Stars forward Cristiane was second in the voting, with Saint Louis Athletica goalkeeper Hope Solo also receiving considerable votes.

I think she has had a stellar July. I must admit that I am very surprised she did not make the All Stars starting XI. She has not had a great year. Still she is a major player and has a large fan base. Just saying, I am surprised.

Abby had a great July- well deserved! I think she deserved a spot on the All Star team as well, but maybe next season.

I wasn't too surprised she didn't make the All-Star starting roster - remember, she didn't really hit her stride until well into July, when the voting was well underway. I'd expect her to make the overall roster, particularly considering Aluko needs to be replaced.
