Fox Cable Networks finally fired Steven Cohen, and Eric Wynalda is replacing him...

    Day before his wedding... :(

Oh well. He is more than a bit of a prat. What he does though is get some absolutely fantastic correspondents. Vickery et al.

Is Wynalda gonna do Fox Football Fone-In? That should be interesting between him and Webster.

Is this April Fools day? I'm surprised anyone is hiring Wynalda, although it's kind of shocking that Cohen had a job too. I don't think I'm the target market for this kind of opinionated, shock-jock soccer news. It just gets too stupid for me. (Cause, by implication, I'm smart).

My source is a good friend, who is very senior at Fox Cable Networks.

Fox Soccer Channel has also issued a press release that you can see on their website... http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/9867712

I presume this could be one of the reasons that they've brought in Wynalda, he'd rather talk about US Soccer than the EPL.

I was having a conversation about this on Twitter earlier. My take on it was that FSC should make it mandatory that Wynalda drink a six pack before every show. Then we would really be entertained.

    First guest: John Harkes.

I just borrowed a thimble from Mrs. C's sewing kit. I thought we could send it around the country to collect all the tears MLS fans are shedding over this development.

Gotta say if the firing came from hillsborough comments then that is some weak sh*t. As for FSC hiring Eric Wynalda... WOW! FSC will be able to measure this season ratings with an abacus that is missing the light blue scales.

Steven at least had a co-promotion from WSD daily on satellite and podcasts. What kind of advertising is FSC going to spend to watch triple F now? your right none. So why are they even bothering a test pattern would get more viewers than a weakly knowledgable in soccer Eric Wynalda and smart-ass english guy in Nick Webster, who has no magnetic charm whatsoever.

Worst part about FSC is that is run by Devry flunkies, and guys who claim to have BA's from Santa Monica College. total twits in charge over there. The show on Goltv with Phil Schoen, and Ray Hudson is alot more fun to watch and the charectors have more dimesion about the game in this country and others.

I think this is a horrible move. it could be worse, they could have replaced Steven Cohen with Max Bretos or Mark Rogandino, O GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amen to that brother. I love the EPL but there are more than 4 clubs in the league and there is more than 1 top tier league in the world. Good luck to Wynalda.

    to Steve Cohen

Bye ! A self proclaimed Eurosnob bites the dust. As posted before, hopefully we get a little more MLS on the show. However since the show still follows the European season and is actually not aired during the summer I would have to guess this is not the plan.

    Re: to Steve Cohen

To clarify, Cohen wasn't fired, his contract was up and they wanted to try something different. It had nothing to do with the boycott (they had no effect on FSC) but was about the focus and content of the show. What FSC wanted and what he wanted to do were different, and anyone familiar with his radio show knows he's not been happy with FFF the past few years.

Good luck to Wynni and Nick, it will be fun to see what they have planned. Hopefull it won't just be a shill for FSC programming tho, and please get RID of that text bar.

    Re: to Steve Cohen

Just a quick story about Cohen. A few years ago when the Galaxy had that friendly against Rangers FC Cohen went to the game and sat in GA a few seats over from me and my cousin. When he showed up all the Rangers fans started giving him sh!t because he was wearing a Chelsea/ Adidas track suit. There was a group of totally drunk fans that started to tell him they were gonna kick his ass. He even said Rangers would win and when that didn't get them back on his side he left. It was pretty funny.

I'll be happy if this makes FFF a little more MLS and US soccer friendly.

    Re: to Steve Cohen

That's nice spin, but totally false. He has always been on one-year contracts with Fox Soccer Channel, and for the 2009/10 season an agreement in principle was in place to bring him back.

However, Cohen has gone completely mental over the last 8-weeks or so, and Fox Cable Networks was having none of it.

The final straw was a couple of weeks ago when he insinuated that the advertisers that left his radio show (including Heineken) were supporting anti-Semitism. Once he crossed that line, he had no future at FSC -- particularly when FSC is trying to court the official Champions League brands (Heineken) for broader partnerships on the network.

Cohen is neither in the situation he finds himself in by his own volition, or because of his Hillsborough comments. He's in the difficult situation because of his actions in the wake of the Hillsborough comments.

    Re: to Steve Cohen

lol, and you say *I'm* spinning? It might help if you actually listened to the show before claiming things that were said or insinuated, he never insinuated that the sponsors who left due to the boycott (there were only 3, btw) supported anti-semitism. If that's what RAWK is claiming now, boy they're a piece of work. I'm not even going to touch that.

What I've said is absolutely true. The agreement in principal is just Fox's right to re-up the contract at the end of each year. They had a chance to bring in Eric and it makes sense, but this wasn't a knee-jerk reaction...they don't work that way. They have a plan for what they want, and weren't bothered by some fanatics who tilt at windmills.

But, I know there's no way you'll be convinced; I've given up on reasoning with the jihad long ago. No reason for me to be here then, cheers mate.

Re: Steven Cohen fired by FSC

    Woody,

I have been listening every night (I'm a podcast listener) for the last 2 years and I think I have to agree with Media Man's assessment. Following up the whole Liverpool debacle (and I totally agree that RAWK are a piece of work), Steven has gotten defensive (and somewhat understandably so). In his defensive mode he threw advertisers who were backing out under the bus and burned a lot of bridges needlessly (IMHO), at the same time he and Kenny continued to degrade the WPS much like they used to MLS. (Both entities that FSC is hosting and trying to build up their relationship with).

I think both you and Media Man have some accurate facts and are actually not that far apart on what you are saying. Was Cohen "Fired"? Technically no, his contract, which was year to year, was not picked up. Was Cohen partially responsible for that contract not being picked up? Well he didn't do himself any favors with his recent comments about WPS or advertisers.

I like Cohen, I really do. Not because I believe what he is saying but because he has passion about the sport and because he has a knack for getting some VERY informed people together to speak about it. I think he can be an absolute prat sometimes but I also think that of some of my friends. I hope FSC and FFF come out stronger in the end and I wish Steven well (and congrats on his wedding) and I will continue to listen to him on WSD.

Unfortunate move. Cohen built that show (I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE the old Fox Football Friday, on the couch format) and it won't be the same without him. He and Nick Geber brought the unique perspective of English expatriates living in and loving the US.

I, for one, think Wynalda will be saccharine and have little depth in terms of discussing leagues other than MLS and EPL.

But he also brings the perspective of someone who has played the game, someone who understands the game from the US Perspective, exactly what a lot of the critics of the show have been complaining about, Europe first, US Soccer/MLS second.
