Abu Dhabi: The GCC Clubs Championship will commence on September 29, 2009 with the teams competing in three groups according to the decision of the GCC Football Organising Committee (GCCFOC) following their meeting on Friday in Bahrain.

Rashid Al Za'abi, the member of the UAEFA and the Chairman of the GCCFOC who presided over the meeting, told Gulf News, "The teams will compete in a home and away league in the first round and the leader of each group, in addition to the best second-placed team, will reach the semi finals.

"The tournament will come to an end on January 19 next year with the matches being held on Tuesdays."

Al Shabab, Al Nasr and Al Wasl have all applied to play in the regional tournament with only two teams eligible for the competition.

Al Shabab, Al Ain and Al Jazira are the only UAE teams that won the GCC Clubs Championship titles before.

"Al Ain will host the GCC Juniors Championship in August this year while the GCC Under 23 Olympic Teams Championship will be organised in Bahrain in January next year." Al Za'abi said.

The draw of the GCC Clubs Championship will be held in Bahrain on July 18.

In short, draw is held on July 18, tournament starts in September

As far as i'm aware, teams from around the Persian Gulf can enter:

This would make the following countries able to enter teams:

Iran, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq.

I'm not sure if Iraq and Iran have ever entered, but it's a good sign that the UAE are entering, as they pulled out last year (maybe they enter because of no Arab Champions League).

Last year, Kuwaiti clubs got banned from playing after they had got to the semi-finals

Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia are the holders.

So whose your reps this year?

Not exactly, the tournaments official name is بطولة مجلس التعاون للأندية الخليجية the word مجلس التعاون does already imply that only the Gulf Cooperation Council countries can take part.

Because Iraq, as a country, is just too big and divese to be attached to a certain group or region.

So what we have then is:

Clubs from the following 6 nations can enter:
    • Bahrain
    • Qatar
    • Kuwait
    • Oman
    • Saudi Arabia
    • UAE
UAE have stated that Al Shabab, Al Nasr and Al Wasl have applied, but only two can enter.

Draw takes place on 18th July in Bahrain

Teams will compete in a home and away league in the first round. Top 2, of presumably 6 teams in two divisions will qualify for the semi-finals.

All games will be played on a Tuesday night. Kick off in September.

Iraq not exactly a small country [by size] , not to mention the population of 30 million people.

Yeah, no need to derail this thread any longer.

Let's keep the discussion about football guys.

Ettifaq and Nasr are Saudi Arabia's reps and if Nasr's new signings click together, they should stroll to the title.

Al Shabab set to face Al Arabi at GCC League

Dubai: Al Shabab coach Toninho Cerezo is expecting his foreign professionals and talented youngsters to strike a perfect blend to get the new season off to a bright start this week.

"We do have a young side, but they are all talented players. They should be able to strike a good balance with the experience of the foreign professionals and get our season to a fine start," Cerezo told Gulf News.

Al Shabab take on Kuwait's Al Arabi Club in their opening Group A match of the GCC Champions League on home turf this Tuesday Kick-off is at 6.55pm.

Three days later they will travel to Abu Dhabi for their UAE Football League (UFL) opener against last season's runners-up Al Jazira before once again taking the next flight out to Bahrain for their match against Al Muharraq in the Gulf competition.
