Shootout in Olaias, Lisboa! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1ChFz2NpPo"]YouTube - Tiroteio em Olaias, Lisboa @ SIC 2009[/ame] This is literally right infront of my building. When they are interviewing the dude about the incident, you see a big long pink building in the backgroud, well our apartment is literally right infront of it.... This type of shootouts has happened numerous times now. Lisboa has been getting increasingly dangerous. When I am there, I don't usually go outside by myself after dark unless its me and my brother or cousins together.... Kind of scary shit, a mean, isolated incidents of shootings alright, but actually shootouts.......
Its pretty messed up, last summer I was in Algarve while watching the shootout in Quinta da Fonte, and now its happening in Olaias as well. Like I knew Lisboa had its problems, I was not adverse to it. I heard of shootouts happening in Amadora, and me and my bro often heard a few gunshots ring out while we were trying to fall asleep in Olaias, but nothing to this scale. Whats crazy, is that there is actually a police station right in the area, and they could not handle the problem.
Same thing is happening in France, Germany, anywhere were there is a influx of new immigrants. It's sad.
These are like "suburbs" right? The core of the city Alfama, Bairro Alto, Mouraria is generally safe right?
Nah not Olaias, Olaias is in the heart of the city, a little metro ride into the baixa. Chelas is also right next to Olaias.
Not really Olaias, Pecheleira have consistently been a high crime, and drug areas, more Pecheleira in the past, but it has now spread next door, and Pecheleira is getting a bit better. But nowadays your really not safe anywhere, look at what just happened in Germany, and Alabama. Young kids now, just don't have a feeling on what life is all about, and are quick to stupid solutions.
Well my father told me Olaias always use to be bad. Before they initiated government housing project in that area, there use to be a bunch of favelas in and around that area. I even remember them when I was younger, around 10 or so...my father also grew up in one. In terms of the Germany and Alabama situation, thats something different I believe. More of a mental instability then anything else....
I agree in most that those incidents were based on mental issues, but nowadays were seeing more, and more of this. Leaves one to think that younger kids now have less emotions on killing someone. Well I have family in Pechelleira, and I visit and stay there every year just to be in the heart of Lisbon. Personally I love to stay there for a few days, and then go to my place in Algarve. The problem with the housing projects that they iniated there and other parts of Lisbon, was that there was no responsibility put on the owners. They were just given housing, so you know what that amounts to, no change in lifestyles, and no responsibility because in reality they don't own it the government does.
