I spoke to Steve last night and he informed me he was being sent to Portland of the USL. I for one am sorry to see him go. I would have liked to see what he could do with a real defence in front of him. Apart from that Steve has always shown himself to be a class guy and will be missed.

My best wishes to Steve as he embarks on his journey. You'll be back in the bigs soon.

Thanks for the update. That answers some questions about our GK depth chart. He was a decent MLS keeper, but his salary was too high for what he could bring.

Thanks for the news. I also would have liked to see what he could do with some defense in front of him. Probably better for him to play in Portland than spend a season on the bench behind Ricketts even though it means there's a good chance the Galaxy are giving up on another player who will probably go on to play well elsewhere.

I wonder if there's any chance he will come back to the Galaxy in 2010 after a stellar season in 2009 in Portland. He will probably be headed to DC United or Chivas. <sigh>

So just to be clear on how this works:

    1) We no longer hold his MLS rights, correct? Any team could now swoop in and take him to MLS if they wanted to and had the roster/cap space to sign him?

    2) Last year he signed a new more lucrative contract for multi years. Does this just get voided? I.e., is there no protection for a player? Kinda harsh to go from $100k to USL salary.

Any MLS rules/roster experts out there that know how this works?

I for one am mostly just pissed off more about last year. We suffered through a guy who learned on the job just to jettison. that's not smart. This year could have been the payoff for last years struggles.

I hear what your saying Mbar, but Steve had stone hands. The experience helped, but he spilled balls a college keeper should hold. Good shot stopper, but my guess is we dropped maybe 5 points from our keepers las year. Can you afford a 100K back up in our league. His number was up as soon as we signed Rickets.

Bye. He cost us half of the lost in the last season. Cannot say I miss him.

I still want Joe Canon back but well.

Yeah, I'm not sorry to see him go. I prefer Saunders too.

I'm just more wondering how the roster rules work in MLS these days. I assume we have no claim to his MLS rights? It would be nice if we could loan some of our guys off to USL teams and still have the right to bring them back if they are needed/ready.

Would be a nice solution to our roster excess and would be a good way for guys like Marshall, Boateng etc. to get minutes and experience while there isn't a spot for them on our roster. (Just speculating obviously)

Any way, good luck to Steve. I think the fairest analysis of last year would be that it wouldn't have made a bit of difference no matter who the keeper was last season. I don't think Steve had a clearly bad game until the away match at Dallas when we got destroyed and then we headed into our death spiral. After that poor performance, Cronin really struggled in the rest of his appearances.

If you are trying to say half of the games we lost were Cronin's fault then that is one of the biggest loads of crap ever posted here on BS and you clearly didn't watch many matches.

I watched every match of last season. Cronin was horrible and I held him account for half of the games that we lost last season. If Joe Cannon was there we probably made into playoff with our 52 goals.

Which is why we continued to suck with Wicks and Saunders? Our crap defense was at fault last season not Cronin. It is a shame he is getting shipped to Portland because I would bet that he'd have a much stronger year this season with an improved defense. You are wrong.

    Sandra,

Joe Cannon did no better the year before. Without a proper defense, no keeper is going to stop that many shots on goal. Please use your head, not your heart.

Don't you read Big Soccer? The consensus is half of the losses were Cronin's fault and the other half were Gordon's fault for being such a lousy finisher, and another 50% were Pete Vagenas's fault, and the last 75% were Alexi Lalas's fault, and another 50% were Tim Leiweke's fault and ... ;)

Thanks for the tidbit on Cronin. He seems like a nice guy so I hope things work out for him. I'm hoping its some sort of loan arrangement too. that way he gets to play 90 every week for a few seasons, and then someday returns to LA a more polished player.

This could be a solution for a few of our young players that we may be hesistant to drop altogether. Lets loan some out to USL teams were they can get minutes, monitor their progression and if they someday improve bring them back. No reserve division? No problem! Lets just not loan them out to ac milan.. :)

The only difference with Joe Cannon is he blamed the defense and was happy to get out of town. Sure, the defense was poor, but for $200K be a leader and shut up and lead - it doesn't really help the team saying that to the press. For me, Joe Cannon was clearly a solid keeper, but one who I didn't mind seeing get shipped out.

Didn't we loan out Jordan last year to Portland as well?

There is so much we don't know about how MLS does things. I assume that when Jordan was on loan he counted against the salary cap even if he didn't count against the roster. While, I wasn't a big Cronin fan, I would hope that we retain Cronin's rights.

Everyone has some "bad guys" who he/she believe is responsible for our lousy performance last season. Here is mine, you can agree or disagree. But don't tell me what I should believe. I watched as many games as you guys did.

    1.Steve Cronin
    2.Mike Randolph
    3.Pires
    4.Greg Venney

Now Pires, Venney and Cronin are gone, it's Randolph's turn.

We may continue sucking with or without these guys. But I have no bad feeling about losing them, for sure.

Oh and it was my fault Franklin got red carded last night....

and I guess I should accept my part in Buddles penalty miss last night too

You can believe, whatever you like. I just offer up these thoughts:

#1 it's a team game, it's rarely just one guy- typically it takes multiple mistakes to give up a goal combined with multiple good plays to score one.

#2 It's not those players, so much as it is those are the Galaxy's weak positions: GK, LM, CM, CB. You just happened to pick your least favorite players at those positions. You could just have easily blamed LM on Allen and Jazic (who both got injured), McDonald for some rookie mistakes in the midfield and Xavier for not being able to or wanting to play on turf.

The reasons I say it's not the players, but those positions are as follows:

Reason one: We were lousy in 2007 too and there was no Cronin, Pires, or Vanney (Instead it was Cannon's worst season in his career, Harmse with signifigant minutes at Dmid, and Harden - starting a rookie at CB).

Reason two: is it really those player's fault, given that they are all acquisitions on the cheap that we need them to start? I contend that most of the players you blame, if given more time to become accustomed to MLS, or limited minutes of the geriatrics, could have contributed without being villified. The fact that we had no one better sucks, but it doesn't make them more or less than the players they are.

    Now the truth comes out!

I too must come clean. Sitting in row two just behind the goal last night, my inability to shout effective Korean insults during the PK's last night may have cost us the game.

And more sinisterly, I may have put the "lucky" game day shirt in the wash accidently, and even thought ill of the Galaxy on more than one occasion damaging the pro-Galaxy kharmic pool through the space time continuum excessive Tivoing through the bad parts.
