Sonny Guadarrama tried to do it right? Went from US to Mexico, and then wanted to switch back to the states. As far as I can remember that was all acceptable in the eyes of FIFA. Problem was, we didn't want him back.

The first NT that secures these multiple passport players for play in an "official match" governed by FIFA "wins" the tug of war. Until then, politics prevail. (and is it safer or smarter to travel to Egypt wearing the US or the norwegian flag?)
But which team won that U18 game, US or NOR?

Mikkel Diskerud can choose US or Norway NT

    http://www.nettavisen.no/sport/fotball/tippeligaen/article2530755.ece

18-yo Stabæk midfielder Mikkel Diskerud has just had his debut with Stabæk's A-squad at their preseason camp in La Manga, Spain.

Diskerud, who has a Norwegian father and American mother, has previously played for the US U-20 squad (http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_6094863.html) and the Norwegian U-18 squad. When asked who he would prefer to be cap-tied to, Diskerud diplomatically states "first-come, first served", but admits he is not sure what the rules are.

He adds his main short-term ambition is to get some significant minutes with Stabæk in Tippeligaen this season.

Hmmmm....this is odd. I thought he made his international intentions pretty clear when, after representing the U.S., he chose to represent Norway against the U.S.

I seriously doubt that Rongen or the USSF would have any problem with his playing for a Norway youth team if he's unsure about his choice, but doing it against us?? He may have burned a bridge or two with that one.

I noticed he's not been called up again and there have been several opportunities.

Re: Mikkel Diskerud can choose US or Norway NT

Odd indeed! I didn't realise he played against the US :D

I teach kids that age here in Norway, and I have noticed that a number of them..how to put it nicely...lack the critical self-awareness of a cabbage.

It is entirely possible that this kid is so self-centred / unaware / obtuse he can't see how the US might have a problem with him playing against them. At least the quote attributed to him leads me to suspect this may be the case. He's not a star, so he would not have anyone advising him on this kind of thing other than possibly an agent who may believe the kid has more earning potential as a Norwegian NT player than a US NT player.

Naturally, the above is pure speculation and given the recent wonderful expose here on BS of the Norwegian sports medias careful vetting of their sources the whole thing may be pure bunk.

Re: Mikkel Diskerud can choose US or Norway NT

I recall him racking up a few assists for us during his one callup. Still, it was just a U-20 friendly and it would be irresponsible to pull out all the stops to get him if he's a 2nd tier U-20 player and he wouldn't make the final squad (and marginal U-20 guys often don't turn into any great shakes anyway).

I haven't heard any direct quotes from players or from Rongen, but I suspect that he when he pulls Youth Euros out of a hat as he does from time to time, he takes them to a U-20 friendly which as no cap-tying consequences and just asks them to "see how it goes". It seems to be working with Giuseppi Nazzani, perhaps it didn't with Mikkel Diskerud. The both have American mothers but it seems like they are much "more" Italian and Norwegian culturally. I wouldn't hold it against Diskerud because in my view we are playing with house money -- chances are if he wears a US shirt it will be because of opportunism, not because he's been burning to play for the US his whole life. That's not to say players like that don't ultimately feel passionate about the US team -- Tom Dooley, for instance -- but even Dooley only ended up with the US by chance.

IIRC he had either 2 or 3 assists in his one match with the U.S. U20's, then played for the Norwegian U18's against the U.S. and scored.

Can't fault him if he used the U.S. call to get noticed. Sometimes that's what it takes. What I enjoy about the whole episode is that Rongen (US U20 coach) casts such a wide net and can find these players. Keeps the U20's interesting for sure.

We seem to be producing more talented central midfielders these days and I think it'd be tough for this kid to break into the senior team. These are the players with dual nationality that we can afford to lose. Although, that being said I hope he proves me wrong.

I dunno, a guy just now starting to break into the Norwegian league isn't someone to go crazy over. I generally think the Norwegian league is roughly on par with MLS circa 2004 or so (probably a little better than MLS now).

Generally we have a better team than Norway particularly in the midfield. It's likely if he becomes good enough for us, he'll be good enough for Norway sooner. Since that's where he's from and where he plays, it'd be hard to get him. We can give him a full shot at the U-20s but even if he says yes he'd have until 2011 to change his mind.

Sad to say aouer NT sux and we have to qualifie from the UEFA so that makes it even harder. So if he wants to play WC then he better go play for the US.
But at the same time i think playing for a NT shud be about playing for your contry not playing were you have the best shot at WCs.

Wasn't there a kid who recently tried switching back and forth between the U.S. and Mexican youth teams, and now no one wants him anymore?

Re: Mikkel Diskerud can choose US or Norway NT

To be entirely fair, his club did win the Tippeligaen this season. I have no idea what Stabaek's personnel looks like but chances are they have some good midfielders if they took the title. I agree that pretty much every factor would push him towards Norway. This is the kind of situation where we need to be 100% honest with the kid and let him make a choice. Norway did not qualify for the U-20 WC (Europe only gets six spots, ouch!), so a chance at our U-20 roster would seem to be the only draw at the moment. But if he makes that choice, he needs to know the odds -- and from his comments it sounds like he's pretty naive about the options and consequences of holding two passports.

The fact that you can't remember his name shows us how well that plan worked out for him... It was Sonny Guadarrama. According to Wikipedia he's spent time with Santos and Morelia, but he hasn't made an impact with either. He's probably kicking around in the reserves for somebody in Primera A right now.

It's amazing how many YNT guys completely fall off the grid. Not just in a "turned out to be a mediocre MLSer" type way, but in a "no career" type way.

No. I live in a region that has quite possibly the world's most bland and boring cuisine, so I feel your pain.

food in england makes me beg for McDonalds, and i only have McDonalds during the long ass road trips to see family on the highway between Reno and Las Vegas, and theres absolutely nothing there.....except McDonalds. England certainly fails at food. We should show them what the barbecue is all about.

    oh......Diskerud. ummmm, yes. lol

So theoretically a kid could play for as many Youth NT's as he wants? So with an German (Irish grandma) mom, Algerian dad, born while on vacation in the US, the kid could play youth NT for Germany, Ireland, France, Algeria AND USA--all at pretty much the same time?
