Russia looked very fast vs Sweden today (or it could be that Sweden is just old and slow). It should be an interesting match on Saturday.

I don't know if Russia was so strong or Sweden so bad tonight ... however, you have to watch out for this team (especially, since Guus Hiddink knows you very well)!

You can never underestimate Guus Hiddink's team. Russia will give you all they can handle. However I think Oranje somehow finds a way to win though.

    2-1 or 2-0 Netherlands.

Re: Oranje vs Russia Euro Quarterfinals

Watched the Russia - Sweden Game and it seems that Russia has hit form at the right time. Always thought that the scoreline against Spain wasn't fair to their performance. You know they're going to play attacking football and be organized at the back with Guus Managing them so they are not going to be easy to beat.

My notes on the our team after the first three games:

Finished 1st in the group of death with a 100% record. Excellent. I couldn't have predicted that, ever, coming into this tournament. The players should take confidence from that but VB should be aware of the weaknesses that we showed at the back otherwise we will be punished and left weeping.

    1) I think that Heitinga proved that he should be playing next to Oijer in Central Defence. I don't care if we have two right footed players in the centre, alot of top teams have to live with that, since both Heitinga and Oijer are comfortable with the ball at their feet and can build up attacks. In terms of quality, this is the best central defence pairing we have in the current squad.

    2) I will have a serious problem if we leave RVP and Robben on the bench in the Quarter Final. It's become worrisome to me that a lot of people keep labeling them as super-subs or good to have on the bench. The only reason they were not in the starting eleven in the first two games was because they were either injured or not match fit. I am happy for Kuijt and VDV for showing good form and having a good torunament so far but, as the France game proved, it makes a World of difference when we have Robben and RVP playing. It's just a different level. Kuijt and VDV should definitely be used as super subs in my eyes.

    3) Might not be the most popular opinion but I don't think Boulahrouz is playing as well as people are making him out to be. He is tough and always sticks in a tackle. However, if you look at his performances closely, you'll see a lot of mistimed tackles, bad passes/clearances, him getting turned, losing markers(especially against France.) I feel that he loses his concentration too often and is not too comfortable with the ball in his feet. He makes a great replacement though. I'd play de Jong in his place and keep him as a replacement.

    4) de Zeeuw. Never understood the common comment about him in this board "never contributes anything offensively". It is not the job of the DM sitting in front of the Defence to score goals or run at defenders all the time. All he has to do is to read and break up opponents plays and distribute well. de Zeeuw does that very well and has good chemistry with Engelaar. Moreover, he provided a lot of excellent through balls and long range passes that freed Boulahrouz and Affelay on the right or even lead to van Persie's goal against Romania. I always see him defending in our box only to pop up in the opponents box shortly after. I don't know what more people are asking for. Wouldn't mind see him starting.

My ideal lineup after watching the Group games very closley:

    ---------------------------------van der Saar-----------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---de Jong-----------Oijer-----------------------Heitinga-----------Gio----
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------de Zeeuw------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------Engelaar-------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------Sneijder------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------RVP------------------------------------------------Robben----
    -------------------------------------RVN---------------------------------

This is the battle of the two best counter-attacking teams and perhaps of the two most confident teams in the tournament. Russia has improved dramatically after got spanked in their first day. As the youngest team, it is no surprise that their main strength is pace. The Dutch defense is yet facing their hardest test, as they are not exactly proved for their quickness. Another Russia weapon, needless to say, is the genius Goose- who from time to time comes up with brilliant strategies to topple favorite. This should be an electrifying, high scoring match. 3-2 win to team which scores goal first.

Russia was my darkhorse team of the tournament. It's still difficult to say how good they are. they were lucky to get a result against Greece because of the terrible goalkeeping mistake. Spain cleaned their clock and they looked good against Sweden. Remember, Sweden lost two starters after the first match against Greece and simply couldn't sustain things into the final Match after the heartbreaking loss against Spain. Had they drawn with Spain and Greece not conceded the goal, Sweden would be through into the quarterfinals. I'm not underestimating Hiddink's team and Van Basten needs to get them ready to play on Saturday. He has some very interesting choices for a starting lineup.

A lot of the improvement in the Russian performance had to do with the return of Andrei Arshavin from suspension. It should be an interesting game considering both teams play a similar style and both have serious questions at the back.

Russia has had their big game--they played very well and getting into the quarters was a large step and now considered a successful tournament

    IMO

they do not have our talent level and they will hope to play counter-attack football for a close 1-0 game

it won't work--we will score first and win 3-0 or 4-0-

-even if they score first I cannot see losing to these guys

I'm not too worried - won't be easy but QFs rarely are. Still see us winning 2-0 or 3-1. Russia had a lot of the ball yesterday, they're not likely to against Oranje.

agree with everything you say but I'd put VdV in Engelaars position I found him to be suspect against smaller/quicker mids and possibly start Kuijt and bring on Robben or van Persie later(whoever is least match fit), Kuijt is great for wearing down/softening up opponents.

Charming match-up with Hiddink leading Russia. However, I feel that we should beat them comfortably.

Wether that actually happens is another thing. But we have more quality in the team.

I agree that VdV needs to be on the pitch, but I can't see him playing for Engelaar, who has been very good in two of the games. VdV is not very good at defending but provides such spark on the offensive end with his passing ability.

I don't mind either Robben or van Persie coming off the bench as it puts a lot of pressure on the opposing defense. I would line it up like this:

    ----VDSar
    Boula--Ooijer--Heitinga--Gio
    ----de Jong--Engelaar
    Sneijder--VdV--Robben
    -----Ruud-----

Noting that the three-headed midfield of Sneijder, VdV and Robben will switch positions at will.

He probably doesn't really care. Just witness his attempted move to Real Madrid. He obviously doesn't want to win the Champions league again. :)

One of my biggest disappointments from this match is that there's no images of him crying. :(

they had an extended shot of him walking off the pitch and he was looking just disapointed. The one time he did cry was when his foot got stepped on after a challenge and that one really hurt.:D

I agree with your first two points, but I disagree about Boulahrouz and de Zeeuw.

I think Boula's been solid, and he's had fewer shaky moments than anyone on the backline. I like him going forward, too, and I don't agree that he's uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.

As for de Zeeuw, I think he's got some offensive responsibilities as a defensive midfielder because he plays for Oranje. There are times when he needs to be able to deliver a good ball or make good decisions. He can do the former, but I don't like his decision-making. He also seems to wait too long to make a move sometimes and thus loses it or doesn't connect on his pass. I'm not saying it's the worst idea to have him start or play, but I'm just not as high on him as you are.

Statistically we should win this match, looking at player's talent and overall performances.. But as said, you never know with Hiddink as their coach, knowing everything about Dutch soccer and probably about Van Basten too. But then, Van Basten knows that dang well too. It's gonna be interesting but I'm not gonna lie; I think we're gonna win.

I disagree about Boula, and I thought he had his best game going forward ever playing in an Oranje kit. Making good runs, and some decent crosses as well. That is not what we expect out of him, but his marking has been strong. Although he can be reckless that side has not really shown.

I think Heitnga and Bouma are a better pair for the middle for what it is worth, but I think it will be the first XI with Ooijer and God Help us Mathijsen.

I do agree that Robben and VP must start. I can see Van Der Vaart playing next to De Jong as Engelaar could be sacrificed.

De Zeeuw is out of the first XI, and again I must admit my suprise at this by VB as Demy was an automatic starter through the qualifiers. This does not bother me as I do not rate him to highly.

I do expect a win as Oranje are better. Hiddink has made his mark with Russia, but Oranje will be bossing the game.

    100% Oranje

anyone know what the yellow card carry over rule is for this tournament? I'm watching the Turkey/Croatia match and they are saying that all card carry over. Turkey is set to lose 2 more players if they go through (it's going into extra time right now). Germans get lucky again!

Cards from group stage and quarters carry over into the Semi's.
But when Semi's start players cards cant carry over into the finals unless its red

Not 100% sure but I think thats right

thanks. I thought that Lahm and Mertersacker might miss the finals if they picked up cards in the next match but I guess that might not be the case.

this Turkey/Croatia match is unbelievable. Croatia score at 119 minutes and Turkey equalize both times on mistakes. Going to penalties.
