    Salu2!

    Atte,

I was born in 1983, and they been playing liguillas since 1970 or 71, so I haven't seen any other system used in Mexico, I like the fact we have a final, teams and fans already know how the system works, in order to win the league championship you have to go through 17 regular season games, and a liguilla, what I don't like are the split season tournaments..........

    Can you explain that?

Also, why's the point of the groups? don't all teams play each other home and away? why not have a single table? are the groups divided geographically?

honestly i dont see the point in having groups.....they're pretty much useless and dont add anything...i like the liguilla, even though it may not be the fairest thing for top teams(like this year to santos)

How do they split the season into two.....Instead of having the '07/'08 season as a full August to May season they split it into Apertura '07 and Clausura '08, this like every one knows is done so that there can be two liguillas and thus more TV money to the FMF and the clubs......

and the groups, they are not divided geographically, I believe they are divide based on how the teams did the season before(includes both Apertura and Clausura) so I believe who ever got the most points from the season before usually goes to group one, and usually(not always) the promoted team ends up in group 3, the reason of why they exist is( and this' what I think) is because if you were to use just the single table, the first place team could easy qualify as early as week twelve, which will some what make the rest of the season for that team meaningless, and with groups only the top two teams make the liguilla(third place teams and lower who made enough points go to the repechaje) which at least no team can clinch a spot until week 14 o 15 most of times, and repechaje the main reason why groups exist...........

    It's garbage.

Good for business, but not good for deciding who the "best team" was of the season.

Example. Chivas was champion a year or so ago after being in the 8th spot in the season. A team in 8th place out of 18 teams is not a champion.

Plus I would say that a true champion can only be determined after home and away legs against the entire competition.

Agreed. even tough im a chivas fan, i would rather have a 1 year league, and maybe, Top 4 teams would be forze to go to the Concacaf champions, the next 3 would go to sudamericana and libertadores, or maybe not sudamericana, and let sudamericana for the next 2 or 3. Plus we could make an all Mexican cup with teams from Primera A participating, like the spanish cup, that would give the fuerzas basicas more time to play a more competitive football, and small teams like atlas could focus they'r efforts in that cup and finally win something. (i heard they put the infamous "coin" from the coin toss, in theyr trophy sheld LOL!

    I would prefer:

    • single table,
    • no repechaje or liguilla,
    • some kind of Cup Tournament,
    • no Interliga,
    • one long season and
    • the team with the best record to be crown Champion.

Being Champion in Mexico does not have a strong prestige because of the split tournaments and it's liguilla. However if you are going to have one, you have to have the other. Having a liguilla without a split season would be long and useless, and having a split season without the liguilla would be short and dull. My opinion anyways. :)

Unfortunately all this wont happen so I would be satisfied if they just removed the repechaje and Interliga. :)

I think the repechaje is a bit much. 8 playoff teams would be more than enough. Single table would not work in Mexico. In Europe, with the Champion's League and UEFA Cup tournaments having so much money and prestige on the line, even if teams are out of the running for the league title, they still have something meaningful to aim for. That would not be the case in Mexico. Even if you awarded something like Libertadores slots to top table teams, this wouldn't be enough incentive to maintain an interest in league games.

Our soccer mindset is not the same as that of Europeans. I remember an interview a couple of years ago with the president of Osasuna. This was when Aguirre was having a great run and Osasuna was in one of the Champions League slots. The guy was teary-eyed when mentioning how much he would love to go to the Champion's League. He wasn't even considering aiming for the league title, just attending the Champion's League would be enough. No current tournament in our hemisphere would garner that type of emotion. The moment a team would be out of the running for the league title, you'd see empty stadiums.

Our system is not perfect and as has been stated, is not the most fair way to crown a champion, but it's exciting. And at the end of the day, the FMF is in the entertainment business.

The latest is this thought of having a round-robin (don't no if single or double) as a liguilla instead of direct elimination. They would have 2 groups of 4, with the best of each going to the final. The owners were originally going to talk about that before the Hugo thing pushed it off the agenda.

The idea is that this way the teams that are normally eliminated in the quarterfinals now get more playoff games, which is a good source of revenue.

Sometimes I wish it was like Argentina. The team with the most points wins the championship. Tigres would have been champion two more times. Damn Pachuca!

The current system is awful, 80% business, 20% sport. Needs to be more balanced.

I would like to see the following:
    1. Primera División and Primera "A"(name needs to be changed) with 20 teams each, No more filial teams in Primera "A".
    2. "Franchises" need to be more stable and stop apearing and dissapearing. Put a stop to that shit.
    3. Change to 1 long season without liguilla. Team with most points is the champion.
    4. The so called draft is illegal and implemented by our "brilliant" directicos to keep the players down. FIFA should step in.
    5. Create a cup tournament with the top 64 clubs in México in a knockout competition like the F.A. Cup.
I'm a realist and know none of my suggestions will happen anytime soon.:(

In all of sports the team with the better record always has an advantage. It's no diffrent here. I like that rule. If they ever play 3 games per round between two teams than that rule should be taken out and the teams with 2 wins advances. Until then, I think that rule should stay.

Nothing that hasn't been talked about before in BS Mexico, but interesting for newcomers.

1- If no liguilla, America would lead with 4 titles since torneos cortos started.
2- Out of 24 short seasons, the first place in the regular season has: 5 titles, 4 losses in the final, 4 losses in semis, and 11 losses in qfs.

Sorry for the bump, but I did not want to start a new thread. :D

I like the system as it is, because the economic aspect allows us to have one of the best leagues in the World. Motivation is what is lacking in the equation.

I would like to see the following modifications:

    1) No groups, top 8 qualify

    2) No repechajes

    3) Do away with the promedios de descenso

    4) Two descend/two ascend

    5) A $5,000,000 prize for the winner of each tournament

    6) Better refereeing

Every team owner is obligated to contribute $277,000/tournament which equals $4,999,999 +/- to form the prize pool.

With the motivation of knowing that they can lose not just $1,000,000, but their franchise (valued at a minimum of $8,000,000 usd for cheaper teams) the owners will be "motivated" to improve the quality of play. Players will be pressured to perform their best and no longer feel like they have it easy. While we get a more competitive tournament.

The FMF has already noted that there is a problem with the tournament (link below).

How about developing some players with decent enough talent to play abroad. Mexico is not developing players at the rate they should be if we make so much #%^&*(&(*(*^ money

If Villaluz and Arellano are the best Mexico has right now aside from Vela and Gio...

How the hell does Jaguares enter the playoffs as the 12th team in the overall table! I hope we (Pachuca) destroy them in the liguilla!

The whole damn playoff format and especially those stupid groups are a farce!
