That, and the Galaxy faithful are all atwitter about this over on their boards. Seem to be convinced this was Yallop telling the Scum/Galexi to F Off.:D

Oh, and McClaren to be their next coach. Good Lord.

I like Yallop. The fantastic job he did of building a lasting winner in San Jose/Houston has been overshadowed by less impressive feats with Canada and the Gals. But he may be the best man to build a great team from scratch. Welcome back, Frank!

My preference would have been for Kinnear, because of his more recent history of success. Frank has been in back to back tough places, with the Canadian FAs absolute dissarray and LAs Superclub idiocy.

But at the same time, well hopefully Frank can return back to his old San Jose success. But Im less optimistic then I would have been with Dom.

Yeah, I feel the same way, I was hoping it would be Dom.

Buit that said, now that they've made up their mind I am 100% behind Frank and his team. A lot of fans around MLS would be very happy to hear Frank was going to coach their team. I think Frank made some big mistakes this season, but I am also sure he will learn from those mistakes. He should have screamed at gAlexi way earlier about the silly fanfare and insane scheduling. Maybe he did.

I think he made tactical errors by playing an injured Becks, especially the day after he lined up for England. Regardless of how much pressure there was that one rests with the Frank. He and only he selects the team.

Hopefully Frank emerges from all of this stronger and better prepared and empowered to stand up to silliness.

We get Yallop! YAY! LA is dumb! YAY! Lalass is stupid! YAY!
If we can get Landon back at a good price, then why not. If we can't oh well.
I'd rather have Ching, you can tell he's still a Quake at heart.

oh and to the people yelling for Riquelme... yea... I kinda started that... sorry... I was just thinking of people who just left their teams on another topic, and he had just left Boca Jrs. so I mentioned him, and now it just stuck. So if by some magic we get him then thats ********ING SWEET!!!, but I doubt it.

I hear Villarreal is asking about 10 million for the transfer fee. I don't remember whether that's dollars, Euros, or pounds. But that would be a lot of money just for his rights, then you'd have to pay his salary on top of that. Not that Lew Wolff couldn't afford it, but it doesn't seem like a great investment. He's one of the best playmakers in the world right now, but besides existing international soccer fans, his name/image won't do much to bring in new people to the stadium the way Beckham and Blanco have.

Remember that when Frank came on board in '01, one of the first (if not the first) persons that he hired was Dom. The guy knows talent. If he gets to build the team, you will see good results.

His biggest (and to my mind, the only) mistake that he made was taking a job under that fxxxxng red-headed moron. Taints his record and causes constipation.

Word has it that as soon as Frank was let go from the Canadian National Team position, he immediately got offers from the New York Red Bulls and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

He was seriously considering taking the Red Bulls job, but his wife really wanted to be in California. With that in mind, there was no San Jose Earthquakes at the time and the CD Chivas USA head coaching position was already filled, so there was only one position open for him then. :(

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

Here's an interesting Article from the LA Daily news. This one includes some interesting tidbits about last nights press conference and Frank's last team talk. I found the quotes below very interesting. My take on the whole thing is that this is a steal for us, and a terrible move for the Galaxitives. Go . . .Quakes!

Galaxy coach Yallop resigns to take same position with expansion San Jose team

    My thoughts on the hiring:

    • First, congrats to Yallop for getting out of the media quagmire that was the Los Angeles Galaxy, and to Wolff, Doyle, and crew for getting one of the two guys they really wanted.
    • Yallop will do well. Those pointing to his struggles with Los Angeles bring up a good point, but they also forget that Los Angeles ended their season one victory away from making the playoffs. This after David Beckham's season ended due to injury. Of course, it seems to me that Frank thrives when outside of the spotlight; when given an opportunity to actually just coach without worrying about pressures placed on him by the media or the front office. He'll have a great situation in San Jose, with Doyle working closely with him on personnel decisions, and with the definite support of Lew Wolff.
    • Those upset that we didn't sign Kinnear shouldn't be. It was never going to happen. Houston had a fairly simple path to MLS Cup, and the longer their season lasted, the harder it was going to be to get Kinnear and give him ample time to shape this team. That said, a buyout of Kinnear's contract would have cost this team vastly more than Yallop's, which reportedly only cost the Quakes a third or fourth round pick in the '08 draft.
    • I'm disappointed that the front office seems to have received permission to bypass the league's new minority hiring policy. While it's certainly possible that the team had interviewed other candidates, it's extremely unlikely, given that most of the main candidates (guys like Hamlett and Pareja) were still in season when this announcement was made. It's also disappointing to see that Brian Schmetzer wasn't considered.

    said Beckham:

Meanwhile, Frank Yallop has resigned as coach of Los Angeles Galaxy.

The former Ipswich Town player is reported to be returning to San Jose to coach the Earthquakes.

"Obviously, we're disappointed," said Beckham, after turning out in the charity match against a Hollywood XI, which was led by actor Anthony LaPaglia in was in aid of the victims of the recent California fires.

"We felt that he was the right man. We felt that he's a good manager and a strong character with the team.

"He's not walking away. He's looking after himself and he's looking after his family.

"It's what we would all do. We're sad to see him leave and we wish him all the luck and all the best."

Wow, I would say that's very thinly veiled criticism of LaLa. I love how LaLa always goes into his "unacceptable not to be the best" spiel, and acts as if he's not the least accountable himself. And he made sure he got in an "at the end of the day" to appeal to the original "at the end of the day" man, Tim Leiweke.

"For the Galaxy, it's not acceptable not to make the playoffs," Lalas said. "Making the playoffs is not a cause for celebration, it's an expectation for the Galaxy. We need to do whatever we need to do in order to make sure in 2008 we play consistently at a higher level."

Asked if the spate of injuries and the heavily back-loaded schedule, which included three coast-to- coast flights in a two-week period, and the spectacle of Beckham's arrival handicapped the team, Lalas said pointedly: "No. There were opportunities for us to play better. Certainly the injuries and the schedule played a part. But we also don't want to use it as an excuse. That's something the Galaxy is not about. ... At the end of the day, regardless of the situation, the Galaxy needs to be better. The Galaxy needs to lead this league."

Great news for the Club. Frank is an even better Coach than most folks realize. Dom said it well earlier this year when he was quoted as saying that Frank was the best coach in MLS and that he had learned so much from Frank.

In my opinion he is the best man for the job. He will make the rebuilding job happen faster than anyone else could. I hope Dom and the boys win the cup this year but Frank will be after them starting today.

We will have a team that will scrap, make no mistake about that folks.

    Welcome home Frank.

Great move and a good choice. He will be able to build the team and coach the way he wants with out Lalas and AEG telling him what to do and who to play. I think since this team is being built from scratch he is by far the best choice and we should be at the very least competetive and entertaining to watch from the very beginning under Franks leadership. A very positive first step.

He's definitely got an outstanding record of doing exactly that. I don't think we could have made a better choice for a rebuilding coach. Sure Dom was the emotional favorite. But in all honesty, Yallop's history of making winners out of nothing is much more appealing than Dom's simple inheritance of a winner.

    1. Thank goodness. All of the Houston supporters have just taken a collective exhale.

    2. Yallop is a fine hire, obviously.

    3. Now you can guys start figuring out who your getting from each team in the expansion draft. From Houston (assuming we get to keep 10-11), you might be able to choose from Nate Jaqua, Corey Ashe, maybe Brad Davis, Ryan Cochrane, Paul Dalglish, Chris Wondolowski, Richard Mulrooney and maybe even Pat Onstad. Which one do you guys take first? I think of that list you probably have to lean towards Cochrane, but obviously it depends on who is available as well.

    4. With Yallop being the hire, I am also worried about Houston guys that want to return to San Jose. They know the coach now, so I think each player may be left with a bit of a choice between the core of the team v. the city they may prefer (if they prefer the Bay Area). Both teams now have coaches they are more than comfortable with.

I agree totally, there is a big difference between making a winner and building a winner from scratch. Frank is the right guy for this job, plus I think he will find great satisfaction in rebuilding the Quakes and beating the shite out of the Galaxy with his creation. Can you think of a better way to stick it to Lalas and the Galaxy brass than that. :D

I just think in 2001, Frank picked some great talent, but most importantly he gave the team a system and an identity that provided the foundation for our championships. And players love to play for him. It should be easy to attract players who have some freedom of movement. I think he's the best possible coach. We'll be bad for a couple years, I don't think we can avoid that, but we also don't have to worry about being the next Real Salt Lake.
