Now in order to get here you have to click the "MLS Clubs" link? Is Red Bull's influence already so pervasive that they are junking up BigSoccer? What's next? "MLS Sides"? I guess I'm just getting older but the change has really thrown off my BigSoccer rhythm.
Anyone who respects the tradition of the game is a Eurosnob even though this is something played all around the world..... South america has Clubs, as do Africa and Asia Or is this another case of someone who loves American provincialism?
But it's the most accurate word. Either "franchises" or "clubs" is more accurate than "teams." Teams is too restrictive. You could only call it teams if you're only talking about the guys on the field and the bench. If you talk about the owner, the stadium, the business, that's not part of the team. But they are all franchises of one company, technically.
My God, cork it. Let it go. It's soccer. We invented every sport here in North America but soccer. They invented it in Europe. We should, in turn, use their terms.
Can we have one sport in the world that isn't americanized garbage and turned to utter shite like the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. etc.
Well that's not really true. I mean Basketball and Hockey were invented by Canadians. But I'll totally give you Baseball and American Football.
"Franchise" is sacrilege! It makes it sound like a business, a football club is so much more than that.
Football is business, but the clubs are institutions, they belong to the fans, the city. A football club is sacred, relegated or Champions, its your club for life.
Except that baseball was a modified version of rounders (invented by the brits) and American Football is a variant of rugby...
I wish you were right, but you are just a walking dollar sign (or quid sign in your case). You're loyalty is your passion, but to them it's just brand loyalty to a product. You are a meaningless number to them. They don't care who you are personally, you are a seat filler. Especially biger clubs who have publically traded stock.. forget about it...shareholders 1st, fans second. and for the fans who are shareholders, they will care about your share value long before they care about you. it's just the sad truth.
Yes, I know. I mean I'm a season ticket holder, I go to every game home and away, yet I am disposable. However, that is not the important thing. Sure the Celtic management can abuse me, and they have done so to all the fans in the past, the priority is that Celtic survive. If someone tried to bring down Celtic football club for financial purposes, or to 'relocate the franchise' to somewhere else, they would be found floating in the Clyde.
No. Think rather of cricket as baseball's older brother. Baseball does come from rounders but the baseball game that developed in America bears little resemblance to rounders today.
Agreed. Soulless corporations love the word "franchise". It's the death of true sports fandom. Who the f_ck wants to cheer for a "franchise"? I don't care if the word is accurate from a business point of view; from a fan point of view the word is horrid. Call them clubs or teams or sides but not "franchises".
No; that would be "unAmerican". We must turn soccer into a soulless copy of all other North American McSports franchise marketing entities; if it is good enough for McDonald's and KFC and Wall Street, it is good enough for McSoccer fans. We cannot allow McAmerican McSports McFans from having any choice in the matter. They must all be nothing more than consumers, first, last, and always. Fans are not welcome.
