Why have few Southern English teams won the league? If south means south of Birmingham, then only Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Portsmouth have won the league.

If we take the North West then Liverpool, Man U, Everton, Blackburn, Preston, Bolton and Man City have all won the league.

Is the south really that bad? :p

Ipswich have won the league before and they're south of Birmingham. It is though undeniably true that the North or more specifically the North West has been more successful. I would guess that northern clubs embraced professionalism earlier than southern ones and that might explain the dominance in late 19th and early 20th century.

The English title has been won 21 times from a club from the south. It's been won 72 times from a club from up North. 14 goes to the clubs from the midlands.More specifically 51 titles have gone to the North West.

European Cup? 7 titles go to the north west, 3 to the midlands, and absolutely none to the south.

The North West owns English football. 11 of the Premiership clubs are northern, 7 of those are from the northwest. 3 of the clubs in the relegation zone are southern.

As things stand, the Premiership in 2008 could look like.
    11 - North
    4 - Midlands
    5 - South

If Preston or Sunderland get promoted that 12 clubs.

no argument there. the souths record is pretty poor.
but then again a club from the south did win a world cup.

It's a strange contradiction in the professional game - most of the big clubs are northern, as are most of the crappy poorly supported clubs.

It also has to be said that once you get past the woefully underachieving city of London, there really aren't a host of cities you'd expect to challenge. It's not as if there are cities of 250,000 up north that regularly win cups and titles.

this is a good point in the strange contradiction...especially with Leeds....the city needs a better club bearing their name seeing as they're third largest city in the country....
