Ronaldo didn't make a name for himself outside of Portugal when he was initially sold either.

But is being sold is the futur, the potential. That is what the pricetag is.

That is true, but Ronaldo and Sporting played an exhibition game VS MU where Ronaldo played amazing and caught thier eye. In other words, he was showcased to the MU management. This is not the case for Nani.

Re: Nani: Time to Let Him Go?

True... But proving talent outside of Portugal cannot be due to that one game. If anything, Nani has proved more outside of Portugal then Ronaldo at the same age. Nani has competed in the CL and scored a goal in the tournament.

Regardless, what is being sold is the talent, hope, and belief that Nani WOULD be a World Class Winger.

Now there is the million dollar question. The way he is playing now, I would say that he will be a solid player but not a super star. One thing is for sure, the way he is playing now, he will not be picked up by a team like MU. Maybe a team like Liverpool or Arsenal.;)

United in for Nani? We believe so
    Thursday, March 1, 2007

from our friends at www.manutdportugal.com comes another story for RN. They are well placed for stories and have good sources within United - expect the press to re-light this link (and tagged their exclusives), but here's what Man Utd Portugal tell us

'Interesting news received today by Portuguese Manchester United Supporters Club refers that Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon are negotiating a summer transfer for exciting midfielder Nani. The first contact from Manchester was made last December by Assistant Manager Carlos Queiróz but Sporting Lisbon directors refused to agree any deal for the Portuguese international, who will only be available at the end of the season. Sporting are dealing with numerous financial problems and club infrastructures have recently been sold including some areas within his own stadium. Sporting Lisbon president Filipe Soares Franco already state to Portuguese press that he won’t carry on in charge if the club fail to reduce debt until the end of the year. Most probably solution won’t please the club fans but Sporting will have no choice other than sell some players next summer. Talented young players like João Moutinho, Miguel Veloso, Nani or Yanick Djalo are among the ones who can leave to club to cut financial debt.

Portuguese Manchester United Supporters Club know that Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon are secretly dealing the possibility of 20 years old Nani to join the Red Devils next July before the club go on the Asia Tour 2007. On the last couple of months, Assistant Manager Carlos Queiróz and Sir Alex Ferguson himself followed the player from close range making quite a few appearances in Lisbon and even at the Portuguese national team matches. Manchester United European scouts were more than once spotted by Portuguese press within the crowd at Alvalade XXI stadium.

The right-sided midfield footballer is contracted to the Lisbon outfit until 2008 and Sporting want to extend it by two or three years, while also eager to insert a clause stating that he cannot be sold for less than £17.5million during that period. This week Nani made it clear to Portuguese press that he isn’t happy at the club, refusing to extend any deal because he’s currently the lower-paid player from the squad. The young winger never hide’s his desire to move to a bigger club at some point and Portuguese fellow Cristiano Ronaldo already express his opinion about Nani referring that he loved to see the talented winger at Old Trafford.

Both clubs sign a partnership back in 2003 when Cristiano Ronaldo went to Old Trafford for £12.2 million. Assistant Manager Carlos Queiróz helped with the deal that’s now over. With only two years left in his contract and flattered by Manchester United interest, Nani and his well known agent Jorge Mendes [the same as Cristiano Ronaldo and José Mourinho] will certainly wait to renew any new contact.

Re: Nani: Time to Let Him Go?

First of all let me say that I am not a sporting fan, but I think that sporting will be making another big mistake to let Nani go.
On the other hand I can see that sporting needs the cash, and lets face it what team in Portugal doesnt need the money.
Nani going to MU? It is a possibility. Maybe to replace Ronaldo because it looks like he will be going to Spain.
The problem that I can see with Nani was the fact that he got to the top to fast (thanks to our media). He is a player that I use to like watching until he played for the National Team. After that he became a very different player with a very different attitude towards the game and the team (lots of ups and downs). It looks like sometimes it gets over his head or something. And his personal live (court cases) its not helping also.
    Just my two cents.
    All the best.

I'm sure the Real Sport Clube de Massamá fans said exactly the same thing. To claim that Ronaldo has not developed at Man Utd (and therefore that no player is ever developed outside of their originial club) is ridiculous and you have been called on it before. I was asked not to respond previously but if your ignorance continues then you will force my hand. Getting back to the Nani news and I agree with Joelzinho in that he would be the third winger and take the bench/rotation spot from Park after he settles in.

It's also very easy for a team with the resources of United to forge a player into his full-potential when the player has been training at one of the top youth academies in the world.

United did help Ronaldo reach his potential, but his potential was created from Sporting and Nacional.

You make a great point. There is no guarantee that Ronaldo would be the player that he is today had he stayed at Sporting an extra season or two. Man Utd gave him the confidence to play well in a rigourous league, and he has benefitted tremendously from playing with world class players and against world class players...

I'd say let Nani go - never hold back a player who absolutely wants to leave

it's not a benefit, neither to the player nor to the club, if he is forced to stay

Re: Nani: Time to Let Him Go?

He would fully put Park on the bench. He has more speed, more muscles, better with the ball, better shot. I am confident he would replace Park and eventually be the successor to Giggs.

Wow.....Ronaldo on one side, Nani on the other....Wow....the opposing Defense going to be seeing double the entire year.

I would be careful with what you write. No one denied anything Man U. has done in terms of CRon's development.

My disdain is for any commentary that states "Man U. made him the player he is"

Because that just isn't all true.

You have more infractions as a poster then any other, I would hope you don't come here only to flame or I WILL begin deleting what I think is your attempt at starting another flame war. Which you have done entirely too much.

Wow, then can some one please explain to me why if Man U is so good at developing "young talent", why they dont develope the talent from thier own schools instead of buying players developed in other teams schools. Man U have supplied the playing time and support to CR at one of the vary top competative teams and leagues in the world. I will even go so far as to say that they have helped him mature as a player, however, I refuse to accept the idea that MU in some manour have developed this player or that CR owes something to this team for his success. MU is good at taking players develeped by others and refining them to suit the MU system. How about MU start taking credit for players from their own schools

I agree, Apparently, People think that with fergie's Guidance, Nani will be a top player which I think so as well. Sporting Academy doesn't get enough credit and I hate it when these english teams try to pouch our players like it's cocaine.

    Sir Fergie

*Talking to a portuguese scout aka insider*

    Fergie:
    You Got what I want
    Scout:
Yes, 5'8 kid from cape verde. Has the speed and skillset you need on your team.
    Fergie:
How much pounds will he cost?
    Scouts:
Ahh, throw in one of those british slutados and we make a deal.

*Fergie & Scout shakes hands and laugh*

I guess, Scholes, giggs, beckham, roy keane and gary neville we're poached from mars then.

Its not so much the insitution of man united, its the coach sir alex.

him and mourinho are the two best coaches in developing players to fullfill their potential.

The likes of nani or quaresma would be blessed to play under either of those two.

Re: Nani: Time to Let Him Go?

I'm not saying poaching never happens though.

Perfect example is chelseas youths, the best sporting players in the acedemy

Adrien silva, fabio ferriera, and ricardo fernandes were all illegaly scouted and bought by chelsea.

thankfully Adrien Silva refused to go, hes a superb playmaking prospect.

but in the end portugal wins out...fabio ferriera and ricardo fernandes are fcuking immense in england right now, and two of the statrs of chelseas reserve team at the ages of 17/18 already.

Playing in england will add an extra dimension and set of attributes and skills to accompany thier flair and skill, so rare in english footy.
