I am interested in subscribing to a soccer magazine that would interest my 10 year old son in the hopes of encoraging him to read more. I am trying to find a magazine about pro soccer or soccer in general that a 10 year old can read and comprehend, rather than a magazine solely about youth soccer. The only soccer magazines I can find on the newsstands here are British magazines that are very expensive. He is more interested in the MLS than the EPL at this time, so I would prefer an American magazine. Any suggestions?

Soccer America is the standard in the U.S. It covers professional, college, and even a bit of youth soccer from the U.S. perspective. It is $79 per year, publishes biweekly as I recall. (The issues are rather thin.)

You should be getting the newspaper that Mass Youth Soccer produces twice a year which has a section especially for kids, but perhaps you looking for something that comes out more frequently? Years ago I got a magazine for my oldest called Soccer Junior. It was actually quite good for both kids and their parents. I believe it was originally published by a group from Connecticut, but the owners eventually sold the magazine. If I recall and from a parent's perspective, it wasn't quite as good after that, but it might be what you're looking for a 10 year old. Try doing a search and see if its still around.

Thanks for the suggestions. Soccer Jr. appears to have disappeared after having been bought by Scholastic. Too bad, as it sounded like what I was looking for. I have signed up for a free trial subscription to Soccer America. For me to spend $79 a year on it it will have to be something I want to read as well.

I signed up last year for 90:00 Minutes Soccer Magazine (www.90soccer.com). It is much more affordable than Soccer America ($79 vs. $29). It is an US magazine publication, so there is plenty of information about the US soccer scene, including MLS, USNMT and even the youth soccer articles. The articles were well written, easy to read, with plenty of soccer photos and my 12 year old son enjoys reading it.

However, he and I enjoy reading it whenever we do receive the issue. It is monthly magazine that is not being published monthly. It is basically published whenever the publisher feels ready to publish it, which could be 5 or 6 or 7 weeks apart. I am still receiving my annual subscription and 12 months had already expired.

Well, your son probably won't comprehend this magazine (also very expensive, $60+/year), but it might help him become very enthusiastic about soccer. The magazine is called Onze Mondial. You can google it and get more info. It's a French magazine with wonderful pictures. Sometimes incredible soccer pictures can fire up kids about soccer more than even great soccer articles.
