I busted out some Hank Williams Sr. tonight. Man, that stuff just buries 99% of what's come after it.

Probably because it went over the thread count. I like it too. My contribution....for Christmas I bought myself tickets to the Taj Mahall/ Los Lobos show at The State Theater. Should be ripping.....

Elvis Presley is the most overrated artist of the 20th Century.

He couldnt be more overrated than any of the pop stars or crap rock radio bands or bland hip hop artists of the 90s or hair metal bands of the 80s that were huge successes.

Elvis was Rock 'n Roll to many and many, including artists.

I think you spelled it wrong... it's Beatles, not Elvis.

Beatles wrote their own music!! and changed styles with every outing. All the while they kept their original audience while adding new adherents. (oh, and they played instruments too, making them...musicians)

And they never stole their schtick from disenfranchised Delta black men.
Elvis was nothing more than a slighty naughty diversion from the genuine article, which mainstrean society found way too scary.

(ps, Im not the worlds biggest Beatles fan)

Re: The semi-official "why the %&@# did they lock the 'random thoughts about music' thread"?

    Both points are simply ludicrous.

Find another person who could package it like Elvis and have a genre of music take off like that in the main stream without being total crap, and influence as many people as he did......

    Surely anyone can do it.

To say he was this one thing, shos ignorance, at times he sang:
Blues, Rockabilly, Gospel, pop , R + B, Jazz, Folk and his first real hits, were of the country variety on the country charts

At first(before those hits) Elvis' recordings would only play in Black communities, so appearently it wasnt about thievery.

On top of that Elvis always gave credit to the artists before him, saying he was just doing what was done years ago(what artist doesnt?) and
the legend BB King, called Elvis an innovator and said without him "their" music would have never had a large stage.

And his influence on hundreds and hundreds of artists to follo cannot be denied, he's considered one of if not the most influential artist of the century. Like him or hate him, it is hard to overstate that.

I dont own one Elvis record, BTW.

Calling the Beatles, overrated, well that's just, I coul dnever understand anyone saying that so I wont get involved.

There's nothing quite like the sound of a record player.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, some friends of mine gave me an ipod shuffle for my birthday recently. I'd never have gotten one on my own because I despise the way people use them to shut out their environment (meaning I'm sick to death of having to bellow at my kids because they can't walk across the room without their music), but I've been goofing around with it for the last couple weeks. I was shocked at the extent to which the mp3 files sterilize the sound. It's much more obvious than with CDs.

I don't know why it was locked but I didn't know about it being locked. Therefore, it must not have been for a content reason. As CHICO said, it was probably just because the post count got too high.

Regardless, let's treat this thread as the continuation of that thread.

Should I re-title this one to let people know?

Hmmm....that is fascinating. But that doesn't explain why people like his music.

Possibly the greatest fluffball morning show interview/performance I've ever seen.

And by "greatest," I mean, a hot poker up the ass would probably be a lot less uncomfortable.

Stephin Merritt on Good Day Atlanta.

I can't stand Bob Dylan's voice. At all. He has some good songs, but I can't listen to them without cringing. I'd much rather go with Hendrix's covers of his work.

    Zing!

My friends, the best American band in recent times is/was not Sleater Kinney. Yo La Tengo gets the nod.

My old guitar teacher used to have a piece of paper on his wall with a quote from Elvis that went something like: "I don't know much about music. In my business you don't have to.":D

If you have a file sharing or music download service check out 'Toure Kunde' West African by way of Paris. Outstanding.
