Formed in 1991, the Charlotte Eagles Soccer Team, based in Charlotte North Carolina, turned pro in 1993. Upon entering the USISL system the Eagles had a measure of success, winning the Southern Atlantic title in 1996. As the old USISL morphed into the United Soccer Leagues (USL) the team again tasted championship success, winning the Atlantic Division title in 1999. A brief spell in the A-League (now USL1) ended in financial trouble due to spiralling travel costs, and the Eagles moved. to the second division (USL2), where they have been almost perenial play-off participants ever since.
