Club Atlético de Madrid was founded in 1903 by Basque students, and was initially established as a Athletic de Bilbao franchise. It was originally named Athletic Club de Madrid. Since football players from Bilbao used to buy Blackburn Rovers kits on their trips to England to play in, both team's uniforms were originally composed of a blue and white striped shirt and blue shorts.
