Mas Puto

Es el puto jefe. El puto amo.
— Pep Guardiola

Do y'all remember that?  That was how Pep described Jose Mourinho once at a press conference.

Puto is a very offensive word. It is the big one.  It is the F * * * of the Spanish Language.  And its use and meaning differs from country to country.  Here is how the Spanish Academy defines it.

As you can see, the word has many meanings, which have changed over the years, and it used  in even more creative ways in Mexico.  But it has been a while since I lived there, so here is a piece from someone who does live there to explain how the world is used.

But it still means what we think it means, despite the many amalgamations over time.

Is it childish & offensive?  Yes.

Is it defensible?  Why would you want to?

Is every person who chants it anti-gay?  Hardly.

Is it part of the game?  Unfortunately.

I have been attending the Texas-OU game at the Cotton Bowl for the last 20 years. Longhorn fans zealously scream "OU Sucks" at the top of their lungs throughout the whole game.  It can certainly be considered a terrible, hoary gay slur.  How did OU fans respond? By zealously chanting "Texas Sucks."

Is it childish & offensive?  Yes.

Is it defensible?  Why would you want to?

Is every person who chants it anti-gay?  Hardly.

Is it part of the game?  Unfortunately.  Did I ever chant it at the Cotton Bowl?  Yes.

Is FIFA being hypocritical by coming down on this, at least 3 World Cups too late, and only after Brazilians started chanting it as well?  Not to mention the fact that it has awarded the next two World Cups to countries that have institutionalized their ant--gay sentiment? Of course.

Will Mexican fans survive without this vaunted "tradition"?  Yes

Will it be missed? No.

Can we all get on with our lives?  Please.
