Recently, Wayne Rooney joined Twitter and got a massive amount of followers very quickly. One of his teammates decided to do the same; only, it didn’t go according to plan.
Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson joined Twitter at midday today. Rio Ferdinand promoted it to his followers. After two hours, during which he was continually abused by United ‘fans’ he evidently had enough and closed down his page.
One tweet read “you are a (their spelling!) abysmal excuse for a footballer. You’re a one-trick pony, a s**t one at that. What Fergie sees in you, I don’t know.”
Every club has a player who is the whipping boy of the fans. Unfortunately Gibson fills that role for United. He’s only a bit-part player, only 6 Premier League starts this season, but he seems to bear the brunt of the United fans’ ire. He has his limitations definitely, he doesn’t have the top-notch vision and passing ability of some of his midfield peers and doesn’t have the pace or trickery to beat opponents, but he does his job and would probably get into the first team of many EPL teams, but that isn’t good enough for many United fans.
Gibson also has a target on his back after choosing to represent the Republic of Ireland internationally, rather than Northern Ireland, the country he was born and raised in. Man United have a large fanbase in Northern Ireland and many of those fans will not like Gibson for this reason.
After Gibson removed his page, some fans tried to get Gibson to return, attempting to get a ‘getgibboback’ campaign to trend. Rio Ferdinand tweeted “ Darron Gibson says he only came on to see what the lads are up to...He came off because he couldn’t be bothered with it, no other reason."
Here are some examples of the abuse Gibson got.
With fans like that eh?
