One of my favourite things about football is the own goal. Own goals can range from funny to fatal (as in the case of Colombia’s Andres Escobar who was shot dead after his own goal against USA in World Cup 94).
Here’s my list of what I think are the best own goals of all time.
I’ve tried to make the list out of good goals that just were scored in the wrong end rather than ones that were just plain unlucky. No Peter Enckleman then, nor the guy who scores one from 40 yards by making a hard tackle and no John Arne Riise in the Champions League (too painful for me to include!). While funny, those goals don’t have the flair I’m looking for. Enjoy.
15) Nicola Caricola (New York Metrostars)
This was in the early days of the MLS and it’s a beauty. Think this was one of the Metrostars first home games.

14) Jean Calve (Sochaux)
An expert chip over the keeper from the edge of the area in a game against Lille.

13) Kim Nam-Il (Vissel Kobe)
This guy is a pretty good defensive mid. I remember him playing extremely well in the 2002 World Cup. This goal is in just because of the length the ball travels.

12) Tony Popovic (Crystal Palace)
Popovic scores a beauty with his back heel….past his own keeper!
11) Recep Cetin (Besiktas)
I would like to point out that Cetin was a very good defender. This wasn’t one of his finest moments though.
