What do Liverpool need to change to win the League?

So as predicted, Man United have done it. Winning the league again. As quick as the media are to label United the world’s greatest team, Liverpool fans know that this should have been our year. We have the best goal difference in the league. We only lost 2 games compared to United’s 4, we have scored more goals and won more away games than United.

So what do we need to change in order to win next year?
>>
Well, I’d love to change the manager but that’s not going to happen so here’s some suggestions:
>>
1) More positive tactics.>>
>>
There is a big difference between trying to win a game and trying not to lose. We blew the title thanks to the 7 home draws we have had this season. Benitez was being far too negative until the last 3 months of the season, but by then the damage had been done. We have shown that we can attack and still keep clean sheets so hopefully next year we will be more positive.
>>
2) More positive substitutions.>>
>>
There is nothing at all wrong with putting an attacking player on the pitch when we are drawing. In fact, it’s usually a good idea if you want to win. Putting Lucas on when you want to win is not okay. Our use of the bench has been dismal at times. One game we had 2 left-backs on the bench. We need real game-changing players in our squad.
>>
3) Don’t be stubborn.>>
>>
If the crowd are clamouring for a striker to be put on, or for a change in shape, don’t ignore them just to prove a point. When Benitez refused to put the extra striker we obviously needed at home to Hull when we were at 2-2, it was plain that his refusal was just to send a message out that he picks the team. We all know he’s in charge but it is not a sign of weakness to listen to others.
>>
4) More adventurous squad.>>
>>
Gerrard and Torres have only appeared together in less than 15 games. We had no viable replacement for Torres, especially when Keane was sold and not replaced. That made all the difference. We also have 5 holding midfielders in our squad but only one attacking central midfielder. We need players who can turn a game coming off the bench. Waiting for Ryan Babel’s once-in-a-blue-moon good game is not good enough. Neither is swapping one full back for another. We need more attack-minded players that can make a difference when we need them to, not the same old predictable substitutions.
>>
5) Get a proper right-winger.>>
>>
Dirk Kuyt is a striker. He is not a proper right-winger. He works harder than any player I’ve ever seen but his position is attack. Either he’s good enough to play there or not. We shouldn’t be creating a position just to fit him in; other top teams don’t do that. Albert Riera showed that we can accommodate wingers in our system so lets put one on the right too.
>>
6) Stop Gerrard taking corners.
>>
We are the worst team in the league at set pieces. Our corners are terrible and don’t usually clear the first defender. Corners are an excellent opportunity to score, one that we routinely waste. Gerrard has been taking corners for years without any success, time for someone else to do it.
>>
7) Ditch Zonal Marking>>
>>
Nearly half of the goals we have conceded have come from set pieces. Either Benitez and his coaches can’t teach zonal marking, or the players can’t do it. Whatever the reason is, it has to go.
>>
8) Develop some young players>>
>>
We haven’t had a young player really come through and stick around for years. Man United have Gibson, Welbeck, the Da Silva twins and Macheda.Arsenal have a squadful of youngsters. Even Chelsea, with their expensively assembled squad has had Franco Di Santo and Michael Mancienne play for them this season. We have had nobody notable. N’Gog has improved as the season has gone on but El Zhar has disappointed. We’ve been hearing how good Krisztian Nemeth is for a while now, so lets give him a try.
>>
9) Spend Wisely.
>>
We don’t have the money to spend that other teams do. That’s why we have to be careful with signings. Andrea Dossena and Robbie Keane were expensive failures and Ryan Babel also has failed to live up to his fee. There are rumours linking us with a £10m bid for Glen Johnson, he’s a good player but is he the player we really need?
>>
10) Sort the ownership issues out.>>
>>
We’re getting repossessed in July so time is of the essence to sort something out. Hicks and Gillett either have the money or don’t, in which case they have to sell. We can’t move forward while we are in ownership limbo.
>>
11) Stop mouthing off in the press.
>>
Whether it is Hicks, Gillett or Benitez, far too many things are being aired in public that should be handled in-house. The club has to present a united front always, even if things are bad behind the scenes.
>>
Any other ideas?
