Are the good times coming back to Oldham?

One of my all-time favourite games I have ever watched was the Oldham Athletic v Manchester United FA Cup Semi-Final in 1994. I know I watched the game between these sides in 1990 but cannot remember much about it (I was only 7). I remember rooting heavily for Oldham that day and I felt really badly for Oldham when Mark Hughes’ volley cancelled out Neil Pointon’s goal and earned United a replay.

My rooting for Oldham was more than just wanting United to lose. I had genuine affection for that side and a lot of people I speak to about that team feel the same way. I think it was because Oldham really were a Cinderella story, having spent most of their history in the lower divisions, they had made it to the top and were in the inaugural Premier League season, staying for two seasons before relegation.

Oldham played really open, attacking, entertaining football too and I have very fond memories of watching the likes of Darren Beckford, Andy Ritchie and Rick Holden. The manager responsible for this success was Joe Royle, who in a surprise move was named Oldham manager on Tuesday.

He replaces John Sheridan, another former favourite player of mine, who was dismissed when a series of problems with the board came to a head when there was an alleged brawl on a team night out. Sheridan was reported to have been involved in a physical altercation between striker Lee Hughes and captain Sean Gregan, though the club say it is due to a run of disappointing results. If that is the case, it is a disappointing way to treat a man who has been a great servant to the club for years.

Royle is the last English manager to win the FA Cup, having won with Everton in 1995. He also got Manchester City promoted back to the Premier League and had a spell at Ipswich Town. He has signed only to the end of the season but there’s always a chance he might stay.

Oldham are currently just below the playoff places in League 1 and I’m sure that all Latics fans are hoping that a great name from the past can help them secure a brighter future.
