It's official. Both winners this year have "Solo" somewhere in their names.
Hope Solo, CONCACAF Female Player of the Year, 2008
Solo in worse times
It's the right decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There's no doubt in my mind she made those saves. And the fact of the matter is it's not 2007 anymore. It's not 2007. And it's 2008, and I think you have to live in the present. And you can't live by big names. You can't live in the past. It doesn't matter what somebody did in an Olympic gold medal game in the Olympics four years ago. Now is what matters, and that's what I think.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto, CONCACAF Male Player of the Year, 2008
GBS in the minors
Yes, Christian Benitez won a title in the summer and was the league MVP in the winter. That's half and half, thanks to the Mexican split season. Yes, Christian Gimenez scored important goals for Pachuca in the CONCACAF Cup and the World Club Cup. Pachuca missed the playoffs this fall. Tim Howard's club didn't win nothing. Rafa Marquez might get some recognition next year, if Barcelona holds on to win something important. But not if Mexico freezes to death in Ohio again in February.
Meanwhile, Schelotto led the Crew to the double, and had three assists in the championship game - hell, you saw it.
I feel pretty good about these picks. I don't anticipate a lot of pushback...at least, among those who acknowledge my right to make these picks...but someone has to.
