Liverpool's wasted chance

Liverpool 0-0 Fulham

What a disappointment.

We completely blew our chance to take a lead over Chelsea and to stretch our lead over Man Utd on Saturday by only drawing 0-0 with Fulham.

That would be the Fulham who are about as effective away from home as a doorbell.

We were supposed to win this game comfortably. Other people laughed me when I said we would not hammer them, as Fulham have one of the best defensive records in the league (check the table if you don’t believe me) but any side with serious title aspirations should win home games against teams such as Fulham.

Rafa got his team completely wrong, again. Fulham have scored a whole 2 goals away from home this season and we countered this devastating attacking threat by playing 2 defensive midfielders. One question. Why?

The answer of course is simple; we don’t have any attacking ones apart from Gerrard and arguably Alonso.

Our central midfielder list is:

Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Lucas, Damien Plessis, Jay Spearing

That’s 4 out and out defensive midfielders and only one pure attacking one!

Even our immediate prospects that are out on loan (Adam Hammill, Paul Anderson, Sebastien Leto) are all wingers. We let Danny Guthrie go in the summer and he has done well for Newcastle but would have been a better option than Lucas (one of the least skilful Brazilians of all time) on Saturday.

We could have even really taken the game to them by playing a midfield diamond with Riera and Nabil El Zhar out wide, Mascherano in front of the defence, and Kuyt just behind Torres and Keane.

The point is we created nothing all game and Torres and Keane were feeding on scraps. Rafa has to be prepared to throw off the shackles against teams like Fulham and be far more aggressive if we are to have any chance of winning the league.

Notes:

· I’ve championed him all season but no more. Jermaine Pennant was pictured passed out drunk once again. He is surely set to leave the club (if anyone will still have him) and has completely blown his big chance at Liverpool. It is sad to see someone of his considerable talents wasting them.
· Yossi Benayoun this week stated he would leave the club if he didn’t get more first team action. I’ve never heard a better reason to leave a player on the bench.
